IMHO Plasma for loungeroom movie/tv viewing, LCD for gaming/PC use, RPCRT for dedicated Home Theatre. Philip

fixxer37
I have a question - and I've tried searching/googling around on this - but am not sure what phrase to use. I don't have an LCD or Plasma (yet). I know 2 people with 32" Phillips LCDs, worth around the $4500 in mid 2005, 1 has Ambilight - which I like. But I have noticed that the LCD gives very unrealistic movement. In 1 example, I was watching an analogue broadcast of Starship Troopers, which I can remember how it looks on my Pana Tau CRT 29" - and it looked like a TV movie shot using video cameras. Everything seemed 'sped' up - i'm not sure if it is 100hz or not, and am not used to the smoothness - but it looked completely different to the dvd version etc. Anyway, based on this I bought a Pana TH-42PX600A over the net, based on comments in this forums and Price! I also saw the SD version in HN, and was very impressed - so I assumed the "HD" version will be better! I don't get it for a few weeks though. Do Plasmas, in particular the model I've bought, suffer from this kind of 'static' image also? This article makes sense as to why I like my current CRT - which is too small and SD! http://news.zdnet.com/2100-9595_22-6136889.html

AndrewWilliams
LCDs have been around a long time before 1995. Does that mean they're dinosaurs? Naturally they've moved on since then. So have CRTRP. Those 1080 CRTRPs look pretty sweet even by today's standards.
Wing Nut
Whenever I'm browsing a store full of larger (40"+) flat panel TVs I can't help but think the majority of LCDs look rather wishy washy against the plasmas. There's the very occasional exception (Sharp?), but the price is usually exceptional too. I've read raves about the Sony Bravia series, but to my eyes at least their PQ is still a bit watercolourish compared to the 'oil painting' on even a cheap SD plasma. Most shops have the colour on their displays cranked up way too high anyway. This is hardly indicative of quality when the TV is set up properly at home. Each to his own I guess, because I have never liked plasma displays. They appear garish and those awful reflections off the screen are very distracting. LCDs have come a long way but I wouldn't buy one as a primary display. They're great for bedrooms etc. Without any doubt, the best PQ I have ever seen is LCoS RPTV, but they may be a liitle "thick" for some.
Wing Nut
I've been proudly shown a couple of new fairly large LCD TVs running in their new homes - I hope for one that my neighbour's not reading this - but even then I knew they were LCDs and not plasmas from across the rooms. It's just that watercolour vs oils effect, however, and to each his own. I agree about reflections, and that was why the early Pioneers were not on my shopping list despite a brilliant picture. However, it seems from watching the shop displays that most current plasma models have adopted non-reflective screen coatings.

I Looked at LCD's and i don't like them, they look "artificial",but each to their own. Now mine is gone i will probably replace it with the latest Panasonic 50" plasma. §naKeEye§
bastards oughta have their hands chopped off like they do in some countries do all pana's have a security feature ? AFAIK, they can be tracked. The 50PX600A has this option. In the setup you get to enter your personal details and cant be changed without the password. I assume it is possible for a factory reset internally ?

The PV500A does have this feature, and it must be possible to reset it in some way, but to be honest I doubt whoever will buy this TV will care or even know to check. They'd probably be aware that it's stolen goods . If the thieves are not professionals then they wouldn't know to reset this. I've set mine just in case, as it just might come in handy if you want to prove to the cops that it's your TV.

larstetens
Thornton, Mate, I know how you feel. My wife and I came home from work in late July, to find our flat had been broken into. the thieves took anything electronic of value(i-pods ect), flat panel TV, all of my wife's jewelry, camera equipment.....total damage approx 35k worth of goods. I still haven't gotten this resolved completely with the insurance company. Hey...get what you like.....go and look at these tv's and try to view them side by side and see just what is pleasing to your eyes. cheers mate, I hope they chatch the thieves. Thornton Melon
Careful Thornton...I have of heard cases were thieves have returned to take what they couldnt carry the first time. You may be right,so I have dramatically increased security, new locks more locks bigger locks and have screwed the windows shut, if the come back through the windows they will have to break the glass, and I have chains on the side gates, making it harder to get in and back out with anything. The police said most locks only stop them carring out the big items, but will not stop them getting in Cheers
PersianImmortal
The police said most locks only stop them carring out the big items, but will not stop them getting inCheers Yeah, the police are always great with handy advice like this. Pity they can't actually do much in terms of catching the thieves. The only chance you'd have of these thieves being caught by the cops is if the thieves happen to be driving over the speed limit in a school zone for example... I've set mine just in case, as it just might come in handy if you want to prove to the cops that it's your TV. In this day & age, surely they can set this safety feature up so when you buy the unit, you plug it in for the first time and set your details & password, then every time the unit loses power then regains it, you are prompted for the password before the screen will operate again. A pain in the butt if you have a power outage, but a small price to pay to deter* would-be thiefs. *Deter - not stop ! It would also make it harder to offload to someone if they couldn't get the screen to work. Sending it back to Pana to get them to override the password should also include proof of purchase. Similar to the anti-theft systems alot of car audio sets have, where you get three goes at the PIN, before you need to call a dealer to obtain the PIN. zubrick
Careful Thornton...I have of heard cases were thieves have returned to take what they couldnt carry the first time. Yes, I have heard of them coming back after a few weeks and taking the new replacements. On a brighter note the thieves didnt return after my place was broken into and the new for old replacements were a bonus.
