kermuffle
hi guys, this speaker set (http://www.eastwoodhifi.com.au/yam_speakers.htm) is being advertised on eastwood hifi's website for $699.00. it that a good deal? are those yammy speakers good for a smallish living room ? i was thinking to go for a stereo setup with floorstandings and an intergrated amp, but these are tempting, based solely on the price... cheers

The speaker pack you are looking at is pretty much bargain basement stuff and while Yamaha have made 2 or 3 truly sensational speakers over the last 30 years , none of them were less than several thousand dollars a pair and the cheaper speakers they make have not recieved much critical acclaim , in fact many find them down right awful. As with all things if your budget is limited to the $700 mark and you must have the whole speaker pack at the one time then your options are going to be severley limited anyway and so a personal audition of the Yam pack against other packs of similar value would be recommeded.Far better to do it in stages and just buy the mains to begin with and steer away from floor standers in the lower price ranges as it is far harder to build a good sounding floorstander on a low ish budget than it is a book shelf style speaker. yamapro
great points raised by gordon and all very true. Still if you HAVE to have surround sound on a $700 budget you sure won't buy better than that package
scotty79
those yam speakers used to be sold as part of a kit from yamaha that included a 6.1 reciever. i suspect that now the AVR is superceded but they have the speakers left over... the reason i know that is my mate has them, they are great (wait, here's the catch) for the price. The sub wont give you oodles of bass and the whole pack is balanced from high mid to just treble, its not all that accurate tonaly, but you cant expect ferrari performance for $600. in my opinion it rates fair, and probably better than the normal offerings at harvey norman and good guys... if you really are on such a tight budget, which is totally understandable, dont forget to audition some accusound's, they a ripper for their price tag too...
