hired goon
G'day, I've been listening to some ISIS of late, ostensibly metal, but informed by the likes of Tool and "post-rock" bands such Godspeed You Black Emperor, Explosions In The Sky and Mogwai, as the music has more than yer usual helping of dynamics, dramatic buildups and atmospheric flavours sprinkled in amongst the hardcore guitars and death vocal stew. In fact, the sound is mostly instrumental, with what little vocal howls there are buried deep in the mix. I think ISIS are touring Oz soon so maybe I'll check 'em out... Another name I neglected is Sunn O))), who's metal is more of a drawn-out subsonic drone from the depths of hell than the double-kickdrum assault that most here would seem to favour. And closely related, though more in a stoner groove, is the relentless 63-min Sabbath-esque dirge that is Sleep's Dopesmoker. --Geoff
