Some Cabling Advice Please

Recommended Posts

G'day all

I want to connect my PC to my LCD TV and I'm confused about the right cable to use and where to get it.

My TV is a Panasonic TX-32LXD600A. It has a female VGA PC connector on it.

My PC has an Inno Geforce FX7600GS 256mb video card that has a DVI out (as well as the VGA connector the monitor's hooked up to (the card also has S-video out)).

Can someone please advise which cable I should use? The video card came with a DVI-VGA adapter. Should I use a DVI to VGA cable (or XVGA - I'm not clear on this), or use the adapter on the card and use a VGA to VGA cable?

Also, my PC and TV are in separate rooms and I'd need a cable more than 5m long - any issues with the distance?

And finally, can anyone please recommend a good source for these cables in Sydney, or online? I've seen a few much shorter ones (2m) around but long ones seem thin on the ground.

Thanks in advance for any help.

You should use either VGA to VGA or DVI to HDMI (assuming your Pana has HDMI).

5m should not be a problem as conf room projectors often have cable going via ceiling space, much longer than 5m.

You can try get one each from Dick Smith, trial them out and return the worse one. They have 14-day refund policy but with cables you'll have to cut open the plastic package so make sure they agree to it first.

I have done similar recently and have some observations.

1. If you use VGA then cables will be much cheaper. You can get a 20m cable for $40.

2. Configuring the Videocard may decide which way you want to go. When I used VGA I could independently configure both screens so my PC was 4:3 but the TV was 16:9. that way the desktop was not stretched on the TV. When I swapped to DVI-HDMI this option was not available.

3. I initially used VGA as I was under the assuption (from other's info) that long HDMI runs were prone to interference more so than long analogue runs however I have a 15 DVI-HDMI from Custom Cables (link above) and can see no interference nor any difference than VGA.

4. I got some short cables from DSE (both DVI and VGA) and hooked up the PC (by moving the PC close to the Panel) and checked out which was better in terms of set-up/geometry/colour reproduction/contrast levels etc then returned the short cable.

Have Fun
