Has anyone else with a Harmony 785 remote had issues with the backlighting NOT turning off? :D

Mine when is sitting charging in the cradle it stays permanently backlit (LCD and keypad) which I thought might be normal? But when I take it out of the cradle it stays exactly the same with the lighting never turning off- needless to say it flattens the battery rather quickly...

I've tried updating the remote Bios, updating to the latest 7.0 Harmony software, changing the "glow" time in the remote settings (currently set to 10 secs) and disabling/ enabling the tilt sensor with no difference. I've also tried removing the battery to reset it etc.

Has anyone got any other suggestions, or is it time to call Logitech / return it to the store?

I've had 3 Harmony Remotes in past 18 months been all over the net getting info of various forums and I've never heard of this one before, looks like a return to me.

Thanks guys- I'll try giving Logitech a call on their 1800 number and see what they say. It's brand new and my first programmable remote- so I want to be sure it's not finger troubles before I return it!

So do they normally stay backlit when in the charger cradle? The only time I've seen the backlight go out was when I had it hooked up to my PC on the USB cable and was programming it.

Ummm, don't think so. I have a Homer Simpson slide show that activates when i put it in the craddle, usually don't get passed the first pic as i'm usually on my way to bed......(ie: i don't usually look at it when it's in teh craddle) and when i pick it back up the next day, it's not backlit.

Hi Murcod,

My original 785 that I got for Xmas did this also. Display would always remain on & also the time would not work on mine. It is definitely faulty. The replacement one's screen/lighting goes off within about 10 secs of unuse or after putting back in cradle.

A word of advice on Harmony phone support in Sydney.......they are pathetic, slow and very rigid in replacement. I got mine as a gift and had no receipt and they were adamant I had to go back to purchase store for replacement. They took forever to get back to me confirming it was faulty (after making me do repeated firmware updates without battery installed) which was ridiculous in itself and had me waiting for several days on whether I could post it back to them, with no conclusive outcome, despite several calls on my behalf. Given it is a new product with a 2 year manufacturer's warranty, I thought that they would have been more helpful with a replacement to say the least! Anyway, I managed to find out where it was purchased from and I drove 155km to that particular store after they confirmed over the phone they would replace it for me even though I had no original receipt.

Hope you have your receipt murcod and just take it back to the purchase store.....don't worry about ringing Logitech as i can tell you it is 100% faulty and they are pathetic......if you have tried to call them on the 1800 number they quote inside the packaging for Australia & NZ you would have noticed it is non-existent.

 Yep,

The number you have dialled is either not available in your area or doesn't exist...

Not a good start to the whole customer service relationship.

It will be interesting taking it back because it's from a large chain store local to me, but it was purchased by a friend's relation who works there- I just gave him the money and never went to the store myself. Suffice to say the price on the docket (which I've got) is a lot lower than the normal $379 on the box. I'll get my friend to check up on the best way to exchange it, I don't want to cause hassles for him after the big favour of getting it cheap for me.

I also found Logitech have an online support page and have logged the problem and my details. Supposedly they will reply in 24hrs.

Oh well, this was why I didn't buy off Ebay! :D

Don't count on it, sometimes it can take 4 days or more for them to reply

Yes, I checked mine again last night and the time isn't updating from what I set it to. No Email from their support yet either....

I think I'll take it back to the store tomorrow and see how I go- I'll just say it was a gift.

I had a call today yes Australia Day re replacing my 880 charger base, took them at least a week to come back to me, new one here next week via airfreight. So don't count on an early reply. In the past its been within 24/48 hours to reply.

Good luck mate.....let us know how you go. Store replacement is your best chance. Sounds like yours is a carbon copy of the one I initially had. :D

Yes, it was certainly the remote that was playing up!

I exchanged it fairly easily- after getting questioned about the price.... and explaining a relative of a friend works for that particular store chain....

The new one was totally different from first putting the battery in- the backlight turned off within 30 secs. :P Tilt it, and it comes back on again- exactly like it should. At least with their simple programming system I had the new one updated to work with my old system settings within minutes.

Good to hear that you got it exchanged easily and replacement is working normally. Exactly my findings also once battery was installed. There's been a few time/backlight issues with these units.......so much dfor quality control on a $400 remote.

 If something can go wrong with a device then I'll usually manage to buy one with problems!

I'm over the moon with mine now, I've just downloaded the TV station icons onto the colour display for all the SD and HD channels. One push to get the TV/ STB on, then select "Favourite Channels" on the display and you've got the colour icons for whatever channel to select from.

The wife WILL be impressed after trying to work how to drive everything with the old remotes. :D Her lack of tech knowledge was a good excuse to buy it.
