Amazon has a Borat Blu-ray Disc listed for release on 3/6. Fox tells me that's an error - there's no Blu-ray version set to be released yet. Just FYI

thats a shame

......while we're talking Buena Vista, industry and retail sources tell us to expect the Blu-ray Disc release of Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl and Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest on 5/22, with Disney and Pixar's Cars following on 6/5.

Looks like I have a date in May to import a BD player. The AU release will probably be at least 6 months behind this given release schedules here so far. Hopefull there are some good cheaper players on the market, or that prices have dropped.

Time to cross to the dark side...

Borat isn't really a film that's going to look a whole lot better on HD than SD, given the source material.

True, but if given a choice between a HD and an SD version, I know which I would prefer.

I agree like u2 rattle and hum on hd-dvd.... you wouldnt really buy it for the pq given the source material !

Hopefully there will be some multi-format options my friend so we can put all this behind us and just go for the material that we want - after all that's what it's all about!

Damn straight buddy, with region free too

Any early thoughts on what you might import Mo as I will be looking to do the same approx same time

I'll be looking for the best import player that does a decent job at a reasonable price.

You thinking group buy?

We would have to organise it so we get shipped them individually or the savings might be lost in the additional local freight and import duty since one of us would be receiving a large shipment.

If nothing else changes between now and then, I have my eye on the Sony Unit. I seems to have the best PQ with 5.1 analogue for those that need it for a decent price (ie up to $500US less than the pana).

Could try and approach some US retailers (like Value Electronics) with numbers of potential buyers and see what they come up with......

Yeah heard a lot of good things about the guy at Value E, Bill Hunt from the Digital Bits even dedicated an

article on the quality service he provides, keen on the group buy idea even if it means have to put in some dollars up front to get what we want, obviously from a reputable dealer

Yeah, I read that article to. Lets put this in the back of our minds and revisit the situation in say march - barring any must have development poping up. Then we should have a feel for the situation and set some plans in motion to go then, or sometime in April and put it to fellow members and see what we can come up with. Casino Royale would be out then too. Hopefully prices will be down too.

Anyone who is interested, PM me and I'll put together a list of names to make sure you are included when the time comes.

What display are you running at the moment Momaw...? I'm holding out for something (in either format but hopefully universal) that will output 24p at a reasonable cost...

Unfortunately it's just an LG High Def 42". I hope to get a pj at the end of the year when my unit is completed. With luck 1080p will be under $5K by then.

The XE1 is supposedly getting a 1080p24 firmware update. The question then is do you consider (rrp) $1599 reasonable

I'd suggest you wait up for a 2nd gen player nobby if lookign blu-ray. prices will drop and the needed features will be standard.

dont think the tosh 2nd gen models do 24p though there has been mention of an update. realistically it will be gen 3 on hd-dvd before that would become a feature I imagine.

Yeah I'll be looking for a new projector by June/July - 1080p is under $5k already if you are interested in shopping at pricejapan via the Mitsubishi - damned fine projector. The JVC is da creme de la creme at the moment but will probably be up around $10k.

As for players one will have to be sub $1k for me a be able to play all of my current SDDVD collection.

the only player sub $1000 hi-def player is the tosh e-1 and no analog outs on that one. there is a 2nd gen sammy that should come, not sure its specs and capabilities but I'd dare say it would be sub $1000. other option is a ps3 but not sure on its 1080p24 capability and again no analog outs.

re sd-dvd most if not all the players are region locked to R4 at present. hopefully you dont have any other region discs.

Yeach wouldn't touch the sammy with a ten foot pole! And you are right the ps3 is 50/60hz only and no analog outs so I'll keep waiting and hoping.... probably gonna be a long wait I guess.... If I can't hold hold any longer I'll probably just go a Toshi from OS.

not touching a sammy either.

probably best to wait with the stuff yoru specifically after.

if going a toshi or any other player these days, a local one might make more sense now. For local sd-dvd replay, local hi-def replay (if player/format is blu-ray and region locked) + for local warranty, savign on frieght not needig a transformer and I'm sure our prices would be pretty competitive once theres enough on the ground and supply outstrips demands.

Mo can guarantee better than that price as I've already got a specialist putting one aside for me, we hav not talked exact dollars but if I can tell him there is other interest may be able to get well under mate

I don't doubt. I just prefer to quote RRP. Then people can decide what street will likely be based on the knowledge of their local market. I have found that too many "discussions" erupt around street price as some areas have great competition and price frenzy's ensue, whereas some areas (like mine) are starved of competition so street prices don't go quite as low. RRP just levels the playing field.

Here's hoping for $3K then by years end

No dramas mate, if you like I will PM you with solid price when available

Would be interested, although I should probably be satisfied with me E1. Don't need 1080p yet. No longer need 5.1 analogue. Just got an Oppo 1080p SD upscaler (DV-981HD). Must be patient. :D

So you've enjoyed those "conversations" too

I remember one clown on Whirlpool once boasting about his hot price on DVD players, super negotiator and all, I knew the costing on the item he claimed to have bought so I asked if he had a copy of the invoice so I could try and get a similar deal, he provided a link to a scan of the invoice, I knew the retailer so I got them to look up their carbon copy of the invoice and sure enough they didn't match, the guy had gone to the trouble of taking to his invoice with Photoshop just to back up his false claims.

I couldn't believe the trouble the guy went to, let alone understand what he thought he was gaining, from that day forward I have put zero credibility on anyones claims of best price etc, RRP will do fine when talking about products, everyone knows products get sold below RRP anyway, how or why they are sold for the price they are is really a case by case basis anyway.

What a knob ha ha ha.

That's why I prefer RRP too.
