Raaf_ Hornet
Hi, from reading the posts on here it seems that there's quite a few of STB's that keel over after about 12 months. If so, do you think its worth taking out an extended warranty for an extra $30 such as HN do ? thanks in advance, Jeff

djOS
If it's only $30 then yes why not. Agreed, just remember it's just another form of insurance - you look at the cost to potential benefit ratio. eg: STB = $300, the warranty = 12 Months & the 5yr extended warranty is $30 If the STB dies at month 18, what will it cost me to replace it. chances are the same feature set will be cheaper then, so say $200. By buying an extended warranty you will have saved yourself $170. On the other hand if the STB dies in 5.5 years (outside of the extra warranty), then you only lost $30 and were prolly gonna by a dual tuner HD PVR anyway! (the Mirage 7000 will be out by then ..... I think )
mich1503559502
just remember that the harvies warranties in particular limit you to use their specified service centre, and it doesnt include shipping costs. my old thomson PVR broke down about 2 years ago (wne it was about 18mths old) and i was shocked to find that they insisted that i send it to a service centre in melbourne (i'm in sydney) and that all the costs to get it there and back were mine. it took about 6 weeks or more to get it fixed, plus about $50+ in postage because they insist you use a courier who makes you sign for it etc.. to cover them incase it goes missing. the $50 for shipping plus the cost of the warranty still ended up saving me overall, but i'm not sure by how much. darwin_fish
Yeah the fine print on these extended warranties varies. I think for STB's that it a good extended warranty is certainly worth the money - they can go belly up with heavy use!
Grampus
My 2 cents. Extended warranties generally are a waste of time. If an electronic device is going to break it will in the first few months. Inside the 12 month warranty. After that if you have a fairly high amount of electromechanical devices then it may be worthwhile. Dells PC extended warranty covers burgulary, accidental droppage and smasheroo. Haven't had the opportunity to test that out yet, but bit sounded good at the time. I guess you weigh up the cost/replacement/absolesence values.

Colbunko
waste of money Yeah agree. I have a CBA credit card that doubles any warranty up to 1 year then adds 1 extra year to warranties up to 5 years. The stand alone yearly fee for the card is $124 (mine is part of a package) but I know ANZ have the same on some of their cards and the fee is about $40. These cards also have a 90 day replacement guarantee against any scenario eg droppages, losing the item, theft etc etc and it is worldwide. You have to weigh up any cash price versus the card and consider the replacement value as well. My Pana 42 HD Plasma is now in the first month of the credit card warranty. Just peace of mind.
