Cambridge Audio 840c Cd Player

Recommended Posts

Hi, If anyone has any suggestions as to how i can upgrade my CD Player (Red Book) capabilities (Currently using Denon DVD 3910 & 3903 Amp with Tannoy Sensys DC2 main speakers ) would this be the way to go?

Would there being a significant difference using the unsampling Cambride 840C CD player over the Denon DVD 3910?

Thanks,

DP it is without doubt the 840c will be better than the 3910. infact even the $600 640c I've heard to be better than the denon universals.

But and this is a big but..you will need to improve on the 2ch pre stage to realise the benefit. unfortunately with the denon avr's pretty much screw any 2ch goodness you might put through them.

The simplest option is to use a dedicated 2ch integrated with ht bypass. some examples are the cambridge 540 integrated, the mf a3.5 or the arcam a90. all will integrate with yoru ht setup and take over as pre's and pwr amps for 2ch givign you best of 2ch and ht. A priceir option is to move to a 2ch pre with ht bypass but then you'll need ot add a pwr amp to drive yoru mains as well.

check the htfaq sticky - link in my sig. fair bit on integrating 2ch with ht gear and cd and 2ch amp upgrades.

I havent played with the 840C in the way you would like, but I have sampled it as a pure CD player feeding into the matching 840A amp, and all I can say is WOW!!! I played with the 840A amp some time ago, and while very impressed, it seemed to lack something. The 840C is now that final jigsaw piece. Music sounds devine, and I was extremely impressed with some AAC files (224kBps) played through it via a Sonos ZP80 hooked up digitally, using the 840C DACs. Very impressive. However, a good stereo amp will make this shine more. I found it partnered particularly well with the Primare I21 integrated amp, maybe more so than the 840A! Go figure!
