Well went ahead & brought one, All I can say is" bloody brillant" . I 've had this player for near 2 weeks now & watched over ten dvd's via hdmi upscaling on a panda pv60 & the picture quality is very good. So far no problems & is very easy to set up, At $119 including 1.5m HDMI cable & a 2 year replacment warranty at tandy could not be happier.Only one down point is the cheap looking remote, apart from that the remote is very functional including a HDMI SEL button 576p/480p,720p or 1080i which can be used while watching a dvd. It will play most formats of dvds Divx, HD nero digital , CD-ROM,you have to go into the root menu for the CD-ROM but it will play.

.OK specifcations

Audio out. coaxial, Av , analogue 5.1 ,

Video out. Component, S-video , Av, HDMI, also has a 3 in 1 card reader. Not a top of the line brand name but for the money in my appinon you can't go wrong. Also from tandy & dse 14 day money back if you don't like it.

uhf 2, I was dithering over whether to buy the Oppo or the Sony ns76, when I read your possitive

experience with the Grundig. Picked one up yesterday, and have to reinterate your feelings, "brilliant".

This will (if it remains reliable) see me through till the high definition war is won, or Oppo come out with

a duel format player. Thanks for bringing this little beauty to my attention. We're both using the Grundig

Pana PV60A combo by the way.

IMO Grundig makes excellent gear, even there cheaper Chinese made stuff seems a cut above the other "cheapies" As you can see from my sig i have a fair litering of Grundig equipment. I am suprised your comments re remote, that is ussally Grundigs better features, does it have button for TV, STB etc?

Posted

achjimmy, you're right about it being a cut above the cheapies, I can't fault it's picture, really good.

The remote though is not their best effort, a 47 x 160mm cheapish feeling plastic with controls only

for the dvd player. Having said that the remote for the Pana plasma isn't too much better, it's a bit

disappointing as well.

John , I'm really glad this post helped you pick out a HDMI dvd player that suits your needs.

I only hope yours continues to work as good as mine is, 2 months old & no problems at all.

But with a 2 year replacement warranty you can't go wrong.

On some dvds (Very few) the color saturation may be to much, if you go into the set up menu on the panda & in colour matrix change from HD to SD will fix this, just turn it back for next dvd.

If you ditch the remote try a hammony universal they seem to be the only ones that will control this player that I have found.

Thank-you for your reply

uhf 2, just a few questions out of curiosity.

(1) Is there long filename support for CD/DVD? and how many characters?

(2) Does it play Divx on DVD+/-R ?

(3) Does it play MP3's on DVD+/-R ? is there a Random play option?

(4) Can JPG & MP3's be played together (slideshow style)

(5) Can it play MPG2 files?

(6) Are 16:9 divx files renderd correctly to a 16:9 screen? (with player & screen set to 16:9)

Apreciate any feedback.

Vinny here is a link to the dvd's manual, it's different but only in regards to the connections Inputs & outputs.

Happy reading

Thanks for the link uhf2.

I've read manual and found that Divx, MP3 & JPG files must be on a CD disk (NOT DVD)

I could not find anything on filename lengths.

On the upside, there is RANDOM play for MP3's.

Also, the section on HDMI>DVI makes NO mention of HDCP (... interesting  ??)

I will put together a mp3 & JPG on dvd tonight to see if it works & let you know

Thanks...

Can you include Divx files as well?

And while you're at it, can you check the length of filenames in the browser.

I don't have any Divx files to burn, & not quite sure what you mean by length of filenames in the browser.

But on the + side, burnt a slide show JEPG , MP3 + JEPG & WMP on dvd, PLAYED no problems at all.

By filenames if it is what I'm thinking it is you can put in 10

Sorry just checked only ( 8 )

Sounds like divx files would probably play on dvd disks as well.

The user manual I read appears to be be for an earlier model & therefore not for this player .

I'm trying to establish what divx player would suit a group of relatives/friends (there's 7 of us)

I took the plunge and bought the Philips 5965 but I can't use HDMI>DVI due to HDCP issues.

But it does play everything on DVD+/- RW disks - which is great.

There's 4 others that have DVI on their plasma as well.

And their giving Philips 5965 a miss.

The bottom line is:

We're after a player that plays everything on DVD disks (like the Philips 5965) and NO HDCP problems from HDMI>DVI (or one that is removed by a hack code)

Other things like USB & long filenames support would be a nice to have option.

I think one of us may have to get this GRUNDIG from Tandys to test it out & return it if not suitable (as was mentioned earlier).

I need another xvid etc dvd player, how has this machine performed so far, card reader work?

Thanks in advance.

I have tried divx burned through nero digital on dvd & cd but have encounted problems with the sound on both disks,as in not having any, great PQ.

Audio is running through anologue 5.1 & also HDMI.

These disks play fine on my computer .

I am going to take the disks into tanny today to see if they will work on another 6124, to see if it is my machine or a general problem the 6124 has.

If any body else has had this problem or success your feedback would be welcome.

Also this is the first time I,ve burnt a nero digital disk ,so it is quite possable that i,ve made a mistake someware.

Yes the card reader works fine.

If you are getting video on playback on the 6124 and they play fine on the PC, then I doubt you have made a mistake in the burn.

Do the divx files you have used have AC3 instead of mp3 audio? I think mp3 is the standard, although it is possible to encode AC3 into the avi instead. It is possible that the 6124 will only handle mp3 in a divx container.

Alternatively, I recall that some players have problems with VBR mp3 but are generally fine with CBR audio. This may be another avenue of difficulty.

I'm interested in this discussion as I have relatives that want a divx capable player that can handle the wide variety of divx encodes that are floating around.

I'v taken the disks into tandy & they would play (but no sound) on there 6124

so it must be a problem with the player & nero digitial encodes.

Only other, is sound could come out of the coaxil but I can't test this

We also tried these disks in a Lg divx player as well as a sony divx player to wich these disks would not play at all.

I'v converted the divx files with mp3 audio & it plays no problem at all

Well I too went with one of these as a fill-in while I wait for the HD world to sort itself out. At $99 from DSE, it was a pretty good deal too! However, the remote codes fro it's power toggle are a direct conflict for the "Input" change command on my Sanyo Z4 projector. Hence, any time I needed to change the input on the projector, the player would power toggle unexpectedly! Needless to say, this was less than desirable. Just a warning - Sanyo PJ owners may not want to play with this one!

After 2 months player started to have problems with purple shadows on fast moving people (Casino Royale) see link below & than more pictures from this user to see more.

got the first player replaced, after one week second player started to do the same thing.

I took it back & got a refund no problem at all.

Just got a panasonic dvd s-52, at double the price I hope it performs better, the plus side is it has inbuilt DTS decodeing & 5.1 analoge out.

Having read your previous, positive comments on the Grundig, I was ready to get one. Saw one in DSE today for $129 but didn't get it because that's $30 more than it was a few weeks ago so the price should drop again.

Now that I see you've had PQ problems with yours, and with the replacement, suddenly I'm no longer so keen to buy. I wonder if any other members have had the same problem. copperhead?, ozGremlin?

btw: How is the pana s-52 performing? And, nice work with posting the 'purple shadows' examples.

Hello straycat, I hope nobody else has had these problems , but on the plus side I had no hasles at all getting a refund.

They gave me the choice a refund or another machine. Full credit to Tandy & DSE :D

Thank-you , & the panda s-52 is performing well so far, the DTS decoding works well & PQ is on par with the grundig.

The build quality is far & above the 6124.

I will post a more detailed review at a later date under the ( Upscaling Dvd Player Panasonic Hdmi [model No: Dvd-s52] ) thead & hopefully this one won't let me down

Thanks for the reply uhf 2, and glad to hear that your new Pana is performing well.

When you returned the Grundig, did they say whether any others had been returned? Also, did they test it instore to verify the problem or did they just accept your description of it?

I agree about the build quality of the 2164, externally at least. The front looks good, but the back of the case isn't too flash. It says 'Made in China', and it looks like it.

I'll look our for your review of the Pana S52.

Hi Vinny, from a couple of your comments it appears that you're familiar with the complexities of the HDMI>DVI/DVI>DVI & HDCP issues. (As are probably most other members.)

I've read about it in other posts but haven't quite figured it out.

I've tried connecting my STB to my Acer LCD using DVI>DVI, but get inferior PQ compared to using component.

Terminal specs for the Acer include: "DVI-D(HDCP)". Is that why I get the poor PQ? And, does this mean I'll be unable to utilise HDMI upscaling if I get an upscaling DVD player?

I realise this query is in an inappropriate thread :D , but it is relevant in a roundabout way.

Hi straycat.

As far as Iknow there is no HDCP on the DVI ports of STB's.

The fact that you're getting a picture with DVI from your STB>LCD confirms this.

Unsure about your poor PQ, but it could be with your equipment setup, poor cables or reception.

You stated your Acer's DVI as HDCP compliant.

Therefore you should have no problems Upscaling from a DVD player using a HDMI>DVI cable.

Cheers

Vinny.
