Richter Thor iv OR Richter Krakatoa Subwoofer?

Recommended Posts

Just a quick question and an honest opinion, im in process of doing my new pupose HT room which is 3.9 X 5.4. It is fully enclosed and have Jamo front and cente X series and Klipsch Rs-10 surrounds (7.1) All that is left is the dvd player and HD STB which i know what im getting. That just leaves the Subwoofer......

Im after a sub woofer and either want the Richter Thor (which i can get for $770 or the Krakatoa (which can get for $540)

IS it worth paying the extra.? I had a look at the thor and its pretty big but sounds good.

Just worried it might be overkill?

what do u think

thanks

Well ... I've got the Krakatoa in a very large (non-dedicated) room that also has lots of glass and opens on to an even bigger living area ... in other words there's lots of opportunity for sound bleed and loss. Anyway, I get a magic result from the Krakatoa throughout the room on both traditional audio and surround sound DVD play. Walks all over anything I've had previously.

You can never have too much Good Bass..... :P

so long as it is good deep tight fast and accurate that is....not boomy or sluggish..... :P

there's not all that much price difference......so if it were me, and even if i only heard a small difference, i would part with an extra couple of hundred, as i would hate to be a couple of months on and have in the back of my head that I could have had something better........?

I went about double my initial budgeted subwoofer allowance when I got the Equator II.......I did worry about it for a while, but as soon as i got it, and heard it.....sorry...FELT it........I was glad I spent the extra dollars........ :P

You only live once......it is important to enjoy yourself while you can.....

cheers.............Fingers.

I myself have the Thor in a room much smaller than yours. I too was concerned about it being overkill, but it integrates so well. I wouldnt be disappointed if I had the Krakatoa, so if you can afford the Thor, get it! Another sub I considered and you may too if the price is right was the Krix Seismix 3 MKII, which I personally found was better if you like to use your sub for music. As my HT room is purely for HT and not music, I chose the Richter.

go the thor no question.

for the very small price difference you get a much better sub that will serve you very well for many years to come and unless your considering spending $2k plus will be just fine for your needs

alebonau, g'day- Question: Whats your opinion? Would you buy 2 thors for $2000 to benefit from a dual sub system, or would money be better spent on a single more capable sub, over the $2000 price range?

I've never tried two subs to be honest. But have seen guys like spearmint who are much more knowledgeable in this area say your better off buying one good sub rather than two cheaper ones.

Mike

ditto....

cheaper subs just don't get as tight, or deep.....so to get two of em, would just exagerate their limitations even more.....?

although I believe you can add a second sub to fix flaws / holes in an existing set up.....ie a bad spot in you particular room.......you need someone like Spearmint to assist you there.......

My Room is 4.0 x 5.25....and one single sub is more than enough.

So depending on the size of your room, surely One Good Sub would suffice.......?

Unfortunately size isnt the only issue with subwoofer drivers. A bigger driver or "box" does not guarantee a better sound. Also with a bigger driver, a higher damping factor is preferable. Personally in your room I think one good subwoofer is enough, and my choice would be the Thor. You wont be disappointed!

Am i missing somthing (I must be)? How is 2x12inches, or 24inch surface area going to move less air than 15inch surface area?

In advance "Appologies for stupidity".

2x3.14x6x6 is > 3.14x7.5x7.5

so in theory 2x12" has greater surface area to move more air than a single 15" sub

as mentioned though much more to subs than just how much surface area a sub has to move air. The Sub's driver design, enclosure design, porting, amp driving it, xover used how you got it setup, where you put it in the room, the room itself etc etc ...

a quality 15 inch can be much better than 2 x 12 inchers. Given a choice of a pardigm servo 15 or two richter thors I know which I'd pick and that being a thor owner.

Dazbug

Don't skimp on the sub you might regret it, especially if you have a dedicated HT room. I've heard quite a few and value for money the SVS subs wins hands down.

I have the 20-39pc plus cylinder and it's fantastic. I took a gamble and never

looked back, it costed delivered to my door including $ conversion, shipping,

customs and GST about $1680 AU. It can handle fast bass easily when listening

to music and goes really lowwwww and loud.

2 subs can sound great, but a lot of work is required to eliminate phase problems.

It is like if you had a pair of full range speakers going down to 30Hz. When you Add a sub there is a crossover point and below this point it can get muddy in some areas due to phase problems.

This is a great sub (I have one myself) and the only other option for me was either the Whise sub (many more $$$) or the B&W PV1 (probably a better design, but more $$$ still).

Bass is theoretically non-directional, so 1 sub should cut it...

buy a 15" for 2k rather than 2 x 1k 12" subs - they dont move as much air as the 15"

close, but not quite there.

As a bass lover, I think you need to look beyond pure surface area. I've got a piar of 15" in my car and given the opourtunity again would probably go a pair of 12's (or just one really good one).

Design makes more difference than size. I used to dislike ports on subs as there are so many places to have phase problems, but the Thor handles it well.

the sw121 is actually just a silver version of the Richter  Thor IV and 101 is the silver version fo the krakatoa.

I rang Richter who confimed this, they are just different colours.

Nice buy! I got one from a retailer at their buy price and it was another almost $200 on that. Where have you got it in the room? (pictures or diagram would help).
