Velodyne Subwoofers Owners Thread

yes thats right. Its got a coupel of options of composite or s-video. I actually have it in as the same input on my plasma that my xbox 360 is hooked to. The 360 is hooked up via component and the velodyne dd via composite. Fortunately component takes priorty so when xbox is off can see the velodyne screen and when the 360 is on can see the 360 screen - don't loose a video input on the plasma that way. Excellent to see on a nice big screen too especilly as it does the plots there and there in front of you.

Its actually quite impressive what the standard component leads offer in pic quality for the 360. I was thinking I might buy a vga connection before I got the 360, but the component is just stunning anyway.

Well you can always invest in a Velodyne SMS1 with the new version of the software it will support down to 5Hz.

5Hz! Sh!t! What does that give you, the ability to levitate objects with thin air?

No the SMS1 is a stand alone unit with the same software and interface that is included in the DD range of subs. It can be used with any brand of subwoofer.

Just remember that these things are basically set & forget, so once you have set up your sub it just acts as an EQ.

Wow, that is a nice feature too.

But I have bought a BFD and my amp has a brickwall at 10Hz so I'll take your original advice spearmint as it is still valid and I am happy. As you say, tis a great bit of kit the sms1 but you typically only set it up using this feature once. (I just love the graphical approach on Al's screen)

Just hook a computer up to your screen and you can do the same and more. Remember the graphs that Al is showing have smoothing invoked so it just depends on how anal one wants to be.

Theoretically you should be able to use Al’s sub to determine your filter settings on the IB.

These tools are great IMO just a very expensive niche market at the moment. Just look at HT processors of today they are all coming out with this technology. The new Denons are supposed to EQ the subs as well IIRC.

Yes! Be hard to get Al to leave it there for the EQ tho Spearmint (unless he takes that plane ride to the Bahamas I'm giving him)

They call it "Mr Brown" and "The Brown Note Filter" and sometimes "Mr Whipee"

Bah humbug on all these new fangled sub integrated subsonic parametric eq's - real men do it with an SPL meter and their fingers on a buzzy BFD!

I would imagine 5Hz would be somewhere around the point of busting a hernia! Its gotta hurt.

5Hz is well below the hearing threshold, a good DVD is Black hawk Down the F**K Irene scene where you see the drivers doing a ~5Hz dance routine. BTW I have a video clip from a guy in the US showing this dance routine.

I’ll find it and if its no too big I add it to the attachments thread.

the sub driver visibly moves slowly in and out at 5hz or at a period of 1/5sec probably the slowest you'd see a driver move ever.

Just tried 3x to upload the file, must be too big 2.31MB because I can’t get it to attach to the post.

Does your gear have a 10Hz brick wall filter too spearmint?

I don't think 5Hz would work on mine  Love to see it tho

spearmint, its probably the forum/server software denying anything uploading bar pics. So change the extension to a .jpg and upload it, should work. Just tell us what the file actually is .mpg, .avi, .wmv or whatever it is and people just have to save it on their desktop and rename back to the right extension. I'd be surprissed if it didn't work in that methode. Give it a try.

ooh think coral cracked the shits last time when someone loaded a video. I wouldn't want our attachnments forum to be shut down again.

spearmint you can't put it up on some other hosting site and post a link ?. Anyone got any suggestions ?

WARNING this clip is 2.3Mb

Black Hawk Down F**K Irene video clip. My apologies to the owner of this clip, I have no idea who you are.

BTW this is the 15” Adire Tumult driver the same as I use and this scene is one of the few to get the driver to actually move some distance. Those are passive radiators on the side of the box.

Thanks to JohnA for hosting the file….

WOW... that is amazing footage.

Al, have you dared to try this scene on your DD-15?

hehehe no. the DD has the subsonic adjustable at 15hz-35hz so would filter this out I'd imagine. Under 15Hz soaks up amp power like anythign apparently with not much noceable sonic value. The 20hz eq slider can be moved over to 15hz for boostign. Velodyne say to leave the 15hz subsonic filer setting as is unless you have some significant issues - but not that I'm sure what they exactly mean by that.

If anyone is interested there is a review of the SMS1 at Audioholics.

SMS1 Review

It would appear that Eastwood Hifi don't think much of it:

"Latest "bullshit" product on the market - Velodyne's SMS-1 Bass Management System for subwoofers. It's supposed to correct the frequency response to be accurate within the room in which it is being used. Yeh, right, like its going to fix standing wave problems? They are the biggest creators of problems in relation to low frequency reproduction that we have to contend with. There is no answer to the standing wave issue apart from moving the position of either the subwoofer "

This was found on the HiFi Gossip page Link
