WOW!!! This beast is big and heavy. :Phttp://www.velodyne.com/velodyne/products/...tal%20drive.pdf

The sub is extremely well packed with a separate compartment inside the foam for the remote and accessories box. Inside the box is a professional grade microphone, table stand and tripod stand, 3 x 8m lengths of cabling for the microphone, audio and video leads.

I chose the gloss black version and the finish reminds me of a Steinway piano. It is a beautiful furniture piece and it has won over the WAF. :D

It is a front-firing sub so the floor surface is not as critical as say on a wooden floor vs shag pile carpet etc.. It sits 1 cm off the floor by 4 chunky aluminium stops/legs. The front cover is easily removable and the 18 inch woofer looks Super HUGE in a domestic setting. :P

The power lead is detachable which makes it easier for installation.

It has a small aqua blue light with the name Velodyne on the bottom that pulses when it receives a signal from the remote and indicates the volume by the number of flashes. There is also a night mode which defeats the impact of the sub and a little amber line appears which underlines Velodyne when in operation. There is a switch on the remote to turn this light off - if you wish.

The rear panel is quite full... 2x RS-232 (in and out), S-Video and composite video, L and R speaker inputs, external sensor for remote control receiver, L and R LFE, large XLR LFE input and XLR mic input, on and off and volume up and down buttons.

The remote is comprehensive to deal with the multitude of options and setup keys.

There are six settings, 4 designed by velodyne after exhaustive testing - Action/adventure, Movies, Pop/Rock, Jazz/Classical. The other 2 are Custom and Eq Defeat. Having listened to a few SACDs and DVD-Audios the difference between the 2 music effects are subtle yet seem to be better when you choose say Jazz for Norah Jones and Rock for Heart- Live in Seattle.

Setting up does take a little time, but thanks to Spearmint who pointed me in the direction of : http://www.avtalk.co.uk/forum/index.php?t=...4&SQ=1128139403

it works a treat. :P

The calibration with the microphone and the built-in test generator is good fun. Instead of a dull thud/drone like I expected, it produces a series of 25 "bass swirls" that reminds me of the starting music to Doctor Who. If there is a rattle to be found in the enclosure or anywhere else in the room - it will find it!

I have the sub "parked" only half a metre from my wife's china cabinet until I get my new speakers (next week) and I can re-arrange the room. I was worried that I might get a few items resonating of even jumping off the shelf - but fortunately all is OK. However our front window is 3 metres away and it seems that it needs re-puttying as I found that it is a little loose.

Ironically it took the scene from Finding Nemo when Darla knocks on the glass tank for it to show up! :P

The heartbeat in DSOTM SACD is breathtaking - and the removal of the lid of the spaceship in WOTW SACD is jawdropping.

I am in LUST with my new subwoofer. ... and my wife says we should name him! :P

nice sub there mjr and good on you for posting on it

you should post where you got the beastie from and the price it goes for too.

Excellent first impressions their MJR, sounds like you are just a wee bit happy with the new toy. :P

Hey guys don’t pressure him into divulging his source or price; it may have been mates’ rates or something.

After you have got used to having the sub I am most interested in how it performs with 2ch music.

As CLJ most aptly put it “Jealous”:P

Thanks guys, re: pricing....

I thought I would have to go to Melbourne to buy it as there is more competition amongst the dealers. But the one and only dealer in Adelaide was happy to give me a REALLY great price rather than miss out on a sale. I don't think it is fair to him to say what price I paid for it.

Once I get my new surrounds I'll post some pics. :P

I think I'll put a note in the local paper - a black baby boy weighing 56Kgs, named ................, father is over the moon with excitement, mother is coping much better than expected.

hi mjr

look forward to the pics when you got it setup

no need to divulge the price/special you got it for just where you got it from and the price they go for - rrp would help anyone else considering getting one.

and yes do tell how well in goes on 2ch.

re the name ....you could just call him something tame like Mike as in Tyson, kinda appropriate for something thats got the power to punch you in the chest and chew your ears off ! :P

LOL Angelo - I think I need a bigger house. Geez wouldn't it be fun to put it in the back of the car and drive down Hindley Street?

Well have I got a deal for you... I will take this new beast off your hands since it is too big for your place and care & nurture it thru to adolescence then when Angelo has sold you a new bigger house I may let you take it back, then again I may not. :P

Heheh you guys crack me up - NO Way!

It is a long weekend over here so I guess I won't see daylight until Tuesday. :P

BTW I put Master and Commander on last night I am hearing groans in the ship and footsteps above deck and lots of stuff I never heard before.

When the first cannons blew I wished I was wearing my brown undies! I had forgotten to change the setting from Jazz/Classical so who knows what a difference it would have made in Action/Adventure setting?

Re: 2 channel I was listening to some stereo on DVD-Audios :

Brian Bromberg - Jaco; The Flaming Lips - Yoshimi; Laurence Juber - Guitar Noir; Eagles - Hotel California; and a Telarc Erich Kunzel CD - Leopold Stokowski and I found that although the bass was clean and tight it was a little overpowering for me. I felt that the bass guitar was a little too forward and dominant to how I was used to listening to the recordings. I am not a musician so I am not the most qualified to do a review but I know what I like and what sounds good to me.

I reduced the volume from before, when I was watching my DVDs and it was beautiful - subtle at times and authorative for the deep organ notes and kettle drums etc. I think if I keep the sub at this volume it will be plenty for action movies too.

I do prefer multichannel recordings so I doubt whether I will be listening to too much 2 channel anyway

I am waiting for my neighbours to go out to try the 1812 overture. :P

One thing I have also noticed and I don't know if it is psychosemetic (sp)is that the 3805 seems to have more grunt?

Another weird thing I noticed is that there is a TV ad for selling rugs and carpets that has a very deep bass in the background when it comes on that I never heard before. It certainly grabs your attention - but it is so low I wonder why it is there?

I know I am probably boring the a$$e$ of you guys but I am like a kid with a new toy and I can't stop looking at it, listening to it, talking about it and now even writing about it.

Yeeha, that sounds like a great addition mjr69 - and great that your better half loves it too - always a positive. We are all envious and have a bloody right to be :P

I wish someone gave me gifts like that DD-10...

Great review of the DD-18 tho... great sub. I've got my eye on an SPL-10. The DD range is out of my budget, but i figure the 1000W SPL range is looking good...

Look forward to seeing some pics of that big baby.

Congratulations on the new purchase and thanks for the very informative review.Having been a 2ch fan for so many years I was very dubious about the effects of subs on good old stereo music replay but having replaced my stop-gap DSE subs with a Whatmough Tempest 2 I have found that the downside is far outweighed by the huge increase in the scale of the sound ,both from the size & depth of the sound image and from the sense of solidity.Music now appears more real ,more in the room ,as opposed to sound coming from a hi-fi system. Now my new sub is by comparison to the Velodyne ,basic in technology terms ,so I can only begin to imagine what things sound like in your house with the benefit of the dsp built into the dd18.

Heartiest congrats on your new purchase.
