oavs Posted July 12, 2009 Posted July 12, 2009 Hi, I am a newby so I have no idea. Is it possible to buy a off the self subwoofer and connect to my existing Marantz model PM550 DC amp? If not To able to use a sub, what do I need? get rid off my amp? How does Marantz model PM550 DC rate as an amp anyway? I was never able to pass the volume 5 on the dial. Currently I have it connected my Kef Colleli speakers. Thanks for your help and hope this is the correct tread for this post
beetle Posted July 12, 2009 Posted July 12, 2009 No idea about the PM550DC audio qualities, but you will be able to buy a sub with a high level (speaker level) input to use with this amp. Cheers, Mark
av4me Posted July 12, 2009 Posted July 12, 2009 (edited) i cant believe i can actually answer this, but....Yes, it's possible but is it worth it? I have a Marantz pm520 dc running 2 channel thru system '1' and a powered sub thru system '2'. Be aware that when you have only system 1 on the amp runs in 4 ohm mode, and as soon as you engage both system 1 and 2 at the same time the amp becomes 8 ohm.........so be sure that yr 2 channel speakers can handle 4-8ohms. On the powered sub i have connected to this system there is a set of connectors that allow you to run analog left and right directly to the sub.....so i hooked it up that was thru system '2' on my amp. Now,....this does increase the "oomph" of the bass sound but you are not isolating the bass signal (no crossover).....so the bass is not of the highest quality. I found that once i hooked a decent set of speakers up the the 520dc i really didnt need the sub and now rarely use it. So, it's possible but probably not a great idea if clarity of sound is your goal Im really happy with the 520dc.....great, clear, faithfull reproduction of sound. Power output (bout 80 watts a channel @ 4 ohm)... though it's not of the 'classic era'. Cheers Edited July 12, 2009 by av4me
Zaphod Beeblebrox Posted July 12, 2009 Posted July 12, 2009 Hi,I am a newby so I have no idea. Is it possible to buy a off the self subwoofer and connect to my existing Marantz model PM550 DC amp? There are usually two ways to connect a subwoofer. Usually, but not always. Check with your subwoofer manufacturer. Method 1: Connect the sub to the speaker wires. Method 2: Connect the sub to the pre-amp outputs on your pre-amp or suitable outputs on the integrated amplifier (which is what you have). Since you do not have pre-amp outputs on your amp, you will need to either connect the sub through the 'EQ OUT' terminals (6.5mm stereo socket) on the front of your amp, or through the speaker lines. The EQ OUT connection is the best option, IMO. If not To able to use a sub, what do I need? get rid off my amp? You'll be able to use a sub. No probs. How does Marantz model PM550 DC rate as an amp anyway? Not bad. It's a 25+ year old amp and things have moved on a little, but you'd need to spend a fair chunk of chnge to get significantly better. I was never able to pass the volume 5 on the dial. Currently I have it connected my Kef Colleli speakers. Thanks for your help and hope this is the correct tread for this post Probably.
oavs Posted July 21, 2009 Author Posted July 21, 2009 So, since I already have my Corellies conected to the same Amp, then my only option is then Method 2. Method 1: Connect the sub to the speaker wires. Method 2: Connect the sub to the pre-amp outputs on your pre-amp or suitable outputs on the integrated amplifier (which is what you have). Can you please explain little more? when you say 'suitable outputs on the integrated amplifier' you mean the front EQ out? If yes, I suppose I need to split this phone jack into L/R RCA's than plug into the sub's RCA in? Is that correct?

Then you can just use regular RCA cables to the sub.
oavs Posted July 21, 2009 Author Posted July 21, 2009 Thank you for your clarification, Feel more confident now. Thanks again fro your advice.
oavs Posted August 5, 2009 Author Posted August 5, 2009 (edited) Correct. Also correct. You can easily purchase a 6.5mm stereo phone plug to RCA converter. Then you can just use regular RCA cables to the sub. My sub HAS arrived!!! and I am little confused about the type of wire should be used. As of your suggestion, I want to use L and R EQ out from the from of the AMP to go into the Sub's L and R in RCA in. My question then 1. A cable with a 6.33mm stereo plug on one end and a pair of independent RCA plugs/jacks on the other like you said. but what type of wire do I use? Some say it needs to be or better to have coaxial (TV areal ) type cable. If that's so then I will need two separate leads running but problem is I cannot fit two coaxial leads into a single point 6.33mm stereo plug. No room for it in the plug. What should I do? Thanks you Edited August 6, 2009 by oavs
