bb671 Posted November 6, 2004 Posted November 6, 2004 Audio - DVD to Receiver Coax works fine . I hook up new optical cable (can see light at end of cable so I assume output from DVD is ok) & change receiver's input to reflect this, but no sound. Ideas ? Any tricks to this type of connection, the cable just pushes in, seems loose? Quality difference between coax & optical ? TIA

TIA <{POST_SNAPBACK}> I always of trouble trying to fit the optical cable, it seems loose to me.... I suspect it is just not plugged in correctly.....Also ensure you have configured the "correct, i.e. corresponding" input on the Receiver to reflect this...... Finally quite rare, but may be there is a menu or switch in the DVD player to enable that outout as well... But I really suspect it's just not plugged in correctly... Ritesh
dvduser Posted November 6, 2004 Posted November 6, 2004 Toslinks need to be fitted so that when you push it in there is a click, that's the little lip securing the plug to the connector. In your Amp/Reveiver, for each device type there should be a menu option to select by which method you are inputting the signal - Coaxial1/Coaxial2/Optical1/Optical2/Analogue etc. etc. make sure you have selected the correct input type to match the device.

cable_merchant Posted November 7, 2004 Posted November 7, 2004 Thanks Dave T, you nailed it Problem sorted bb671 - feelin like a real goose ! <{POST_SNAPBACK}> LOL ! I had an emergency callout to a friend's place the other week - he had done exactly the same thing!!! Not all that obvious though are they? They should put some tape over them like they do on printer cartridges, so you know you have to pull it off... Re: quality difference between the two - It is often said, why introduce an extra element of optical endoding/decoding? This is bound to induce some data loss... Personally, I'm not sure if that is technically correct, however most "experts" plump for the electrical coaxial connection for that reason.
