Guest Nat29 Posted October 21, 2004 Posted October 21, 2004 Does anyone have pixelation problems in SD while watching programs mainly on 7. I find all the other channels are fine but a lot of programs on 7 at night seem to now and then.

After having Jim's Antenna put a new one up, my reception has been perfect. Till then I would have block problems, audio pop's, a frezze frame etc, thing was it only happened now and then and sometimes worse on one station or another. But 98% of the time all was great, as such I started to blame the TV Stations, yet (aside from one or two station problems) it was all me. Now while Jim wasn't cheap, spent the money once and never had a problem since.

Other shows, from across all the different channels, look fine to me most of the time.

At one point I did a small grab and transfer/encode of its HD broadcast, and that looked just bloody amazing.

I've since bought a Teac DV-B350 and had no problems since, it seems as if the Pana box was more susceptible to this. The signal strength on seven was always about 10% below the others at my place, this could have had something to do with it. I get my signals from a translator (Newland Hill) BTW.

Well, maybe I was exaggerating a bit when I wrote "VCD quality". However, I do still find a noticeable difference between Enterprise and some other shows - it is most obvious when there is a closeup of someone's face and they then turn their head, showing quite a few MPEG compression/motion artifacts. This is evident to me in both playback on the PC, and playback on the TV via a Neuston MC-500. It may be that Ch9 are compressing the SD channel higher and giving more bandwidth to the HD one in this case - though shows like CSI dont appear to show the same artifacts and they have a very high quality HD version being broadcast at the same time. It may also just be that I'm nuts. (Though the "boss" complains about Enterprise too).

The almost smearing effect on faces is there in the originals, so I wouldn't say its all 100% MPEG related.

Even transmitting SD at 8mbits won't give a noticeable quality boost anything over 6mbits is a waste of bandwidth. Watch the HD version and watch all your shows on Nine HD if possible because the upconversion will be better 99% of the time. tonygib Posted October 24, 2004 Posted October 24, 2004 Yeah, I do notice noise in a lot of shows, especially since I watch all this stuff up close on the computer. However thats very different from mpeg artifacts. On the next Enterprise ep, I'll have a much, very close look on the SD version to compare.

I'll be quite annoyed if they moved it to last night.

O'well, a friend is getting season 3 off the net and I already have the first few eps for season 4. So given that they did this type of sh*t, then I find it hard to beleive that anyone wonders why ppl are turning away from our local FTA.

Besides, at the rate 9 work, chances are you will be able to buy them in HD sooner
pneu Posted November 2, 2004 Posted November 2, 2004 If youre getting reception problems and you don't wanna fork out lots for new rigging, I would suggest trying the Digitor amplified antenna from Dick Smith (on sale now for $39). It's solved all my reception problems and guarantees me a 100% signal 24hrs a day. Basically what happens is you turn the gain up and the signal strength+quality go up like hell! I have gain set to about 30% which achieves 100% signals at all times, so if you've got a particularly weak signal then even more gain should definitely help.
