Stephen1503559573 Posted October 15, 2004 Posted October 15, 2004 Hi all, I've bitten the bullet and am starting to build my HTPC. I have a Hitachi C47WD5000 Rear Pro TV. I would like some advice on what video card to buy. I am presuming that one with component video out would be the go, also I dont really want to have to spend more than $300 if possible (is that realistic?) 3D performane is not critical because I dont intend to use the PC for games, it will be for Digital TV viewing and recording, DVD playback, some internet browsing. Thanks In advance Stephen
Wired1503559622 Posted October 16, 2004 Posted October 16, 2004 Your not going to get a video card with component output unless you buy a 3rd party (& pricey) adaptor. I guess something like a ATI Radeon 9200 which can be had for ~$100 would be a good suggestion.

It has best image quality and high resolution. Our WinFast A380 Ultra THD MyVIVO can fully support it! "
djOS Posted October 16, 2004 Posted October 16, 2004 You cant beat the Radeons for PQ & true internal HW MPEG2 decoding, my 7500 via s-Video @ 800x600x32 is excellent. I cant wait till I get my Pana AE700 PJ as then I'll put a Nebula HDTV card in it - should be awesome.
digitaladvisor Posted October 16, 2004 Posted October 16, 2004 Component adaptors can be got from the following link: http://www.videocapturecard.com/hdtvr8500.html Explains all. DA
Saturated Posted October 16, 2004 Posted October 16, 2004 Does anyone know of a place in Brisbane where I can see how good the tv out for the radeon card is. I'm a l,ittle sceptical on how good it could be...Looked at nvidia and it was simply terrible.... When I browse the net on my teac itv500 box or stream video through it, the picture is better than I expected... If I could get a card to match that output, I'd be happy... Anyone made a direct comparison to the above? Cheers,

Thanks In advance Stephen <{POST_SNAPBACK}> I have the same TV, and also thought about the HTPC, but gave up. I did buy a Crescendo Systems VGA to component transcoder, which worked, but I did not want to spend the time fiddling with the PC. I had a Radeon 9200SE card, faultless, no fan so its quiet. I now use a Neuston MC-500, via ethernet, to play back SD DTV recordings from the PC in another room. The MC-500 has excellent quality output and ease of use. I have found that the TV out of video cards is terrible, especially on large TV's.
Mr.Bitey Posted October 18, 2004 Posted October 18, 2004 dogsrus, Given your building a HTPC, you'll want to get the BEST picture to your Hitachi.. What do you have so far (cpu, ram, mothebroard) ? You should aim to feed the hitachi a 1080i signal for everything. Cheers, Bitey
jbalat Posted October 18, 2004 Posted October 18, 2004 I assume you do not have a VGA input on your TV ? I unplugged my friends (expensive gold plated) Composite cables from the back of his 60" LG rear-proj TV and plugged the VGA cable in that was still inside the box. (He has a high def digitek box) Believe me when I tell you that there were a lot of stunned faces around as no-one could believe how much the picture quality improved...
