lizclinton Posted October 13, 2004 Posted October 13, 2004 Is anybody having trouble recieving the ABC up convert channel 20 ?.
dfp Posted October 13, 2004 Posted October 13, 2004 Seems to be not working in northern tas either, just jumps back to the main SD channel on my PC DVB-T card.

The HD would be late by 1 hour during the evening otherwise. This will revert to normal in a week and a half. The ABC has only one set of HD encoders for the whole of Australia. On top of that there are no native HD programs at the moment. The up conversion is no better than the SD service. In fact due to Mpeg proccessing some SD material will look worse being up-converted. Having said that the ABC has a lot of good SD programs (technically) and they up-convert very well. But compare SD and the HD (up-converted) on 2 STBs and monitors and you will see bugger all diference.
I am not a duck Posted October 13, 2004 Posted October 13, 2004 Thanks gepm, one of my customers suspected that and I wasn't sure. Now I can tell them.

I spoke to master control in Hobart yesterday arvo but they had no idea what was going on. I must say though to my untrained eyes the pq on channel 20 does seem to be a little better if only marginally. I understand that it,s only an upconvert from the already very good quality sd picture but it seems to look better. Any thoughts as to how this could be ?

Therefore an HD upconvert if properly done is less likely to display compression artefacts than a comparitive SD stream.

We can only hope that WIN & Southern X will look that good some day.
lizclinton Posted October 31, 2004 Author Posted October 31, 2004 Now that we are back to proper time does anyone know when channel 20 will reappear ??
dfp Posted November 2, 2004 Posted November 2, 2004 It does appear that the HD channel is back. Watching 1080i/AC3 now, even though its upconvert doesnt look to bad.
