NINE DIGITALLY ENHANCES ELECTION 2004

AUSTRALIA DECIDES

Live from 6.30pm Saturday, October 9

The Nine Network’s live coverage of the Federal election from 6.30pm on polling day this Saturday will feature two major additional services.

These services are designed to give viewers up-to-date results at their fingertips – with information on their electorate and the nationwide vote, as well as additional information to the live broadcast.

Through a Channel 90 Election Enhancement, viewers with free-to-air digital set top boxes can tune to channel 90 (channel 80 regionally) to see an enhanced election coverage.

On channel 90, the viewer will receive the live broadcast on the right-hand side of the screen, with additional information constantly updating in two windows on the left.

This information will include:

• Updated voting results by electorate including cliff-hanger seats

• Total seat counts by party; seat predictions and seats changing hands

• Electorate maps displaying counts

The Channel 90 Elections Enhancement will run for the duration of Nine’s election broadcast.

Through an SMS Electorate Update Service, Nine viewers will be given the opportunity to receive the latest information on the vote count in their electorate as well as Nine’s winner prediction for their seat.

The cost of the service is 55 cents per message and the process is simple: Viewers text their electorate name to 188 9999 and receive a text message which gives them:

• The official count for the seat so far

• A winner prediction for the seat from Nine’s team of specialist analysts

• A total count of seats nationally for the ALP and Coalition

SMS Electorate Updates will be available through all mobile networks from the beginning of Nine’s broadcast until 11.00pm

Nine Director of Digital and Premium Services, Ms Veronica Chalom, says the prediction capability in both the enhancement and the SMS service is new and exclusive to Nine.

“Nine has developed a comprehensive new database that enables us to deliver real-time vote counts and predications on demand, this is a first in Australia.

“It’s all part of Nine’s ongoing commitment to innovation and providing viewers with the best in information and entertainment services,” she said.

Election 2004 – Australia Decides: Saturday, October 9 from 6.30pm on Channel Nine.

---------------------------

Further technical notes:

The enhancement is expected to be available in all Nine Network capital city stations, and on the NBN regional network.

This enhancement will follow the same method as previously employed for Pompeii and Colosseum. Channel 90 (80 - NBN) will be switched from HD to SD at 6.30pm and be available to all free to view digital viewers until the end of the telecast (approx 11.30 pm). It will then be switched back into HD mode.

Who the hell would be dumb enough (or perverted enough) to want to PAY for ELECTION RESULT UPDATES!?!?!?!!??!:P

But, on the subject, no manner of whiz-bang Ray-Martin-in-drag-doing-tango-with-Alexandra-Downer glitz or special effects would make me watch the garbage Nine puts out compared to the ABC .... if I was even going to bother watching a forgone conclusion slowly dawning on the "pundits"!

I'll be watching the Monk Festival, thank you very much, Ten!

Just to confirm. Win decided not to take it (thanks for the email Nine. At least you guys and NBN know what you are doing).

Eh? So WIN actually had the opportunity to provide their first additional digital service ever, yet they declined?!! What's up with that? If they are technically able to offer the service (and I can’t see why not) then I guess it must come down to WIN's reluctance to spend any additional money, or improve their digital service in any way whatsoever

I'd be interested on hearing more about this if you want to PM me Kenneth.

WIN wont be spending money on anything Digital related for a very long time. I had a conversation with the head Technical man at Win Wollongong - after asking if they planned to update the equipment used to make promos, news etc, he laughed and suggested it will never happen. He just laughed at my questions about Digital TV. I asked when will WIN start broadcasting HD, he laughed and said they are. I said, no I mean some actual content, he chuckled and said well until we have to. Things are not looking good at WIN for atleast 8 years. Thats how long I predict for the next big equipment upgrade.

Re: the Election. Very good of Nine to do this, it is this type of event that is perfectly suited to Digital TV. Multi channels are very welcome

I had to laugh the other night when Ten announced that they only had to show 2 hours of Monk to pull massive numbers of Monk-hating viewers [like me] from the Election Hounds on the other channels!!

Btw ... Does Ray own half of Nine? Or do they actually choose to employ him?

ill be watching the ABC coverage with Antony Green

I'll be recording the ABC coverage as I will be at the Tally Room working for another broadcaster (look in the Election 2004 forum).

If Win had the extra channel, I would of recorded somehow (mainly due to hard drive space) both ABC's coverage and the special channel on Win.

Wow, can't complain about the coverage of the election this year on Digital TV.

*Digital 44 will be showing their datacast

*Nine will be showing their enhanced content

*ABC

*Sky News Active on Foxtel and Austar Digital

This is really a show case of Digital TV - although not too apealing to a huge demographic.

And based on the 7.30 Report special last night, the ABC coverage is going to be in 4:3. Still.

If they don't run 16:9, it is a sad reflection on the broadcasting capabilities of our national broadcaster. Every other network (SBS, Seven, Nine and Ten) will be running partial or full N&CA coverage that is primarily in 16:9.

The ABC has the capability of delivering 16:9 N&CA (eg Insiders), has digital 16:9 OB vans around Australia, and should be able to handle ARCing 4:3 satellite crosses (to electorates around the country) if required.

I can understand (to an extent) why their news coverage is still 4:3, but this is hopeless. Absolutely hopeless.

Congratulations to Channel 9 for delivering [what I believe will be] widescreen coverage (again? - did they do the same in 2001?), and locally-produced multi-channel content.

Shame on WIN for refusing to take the feed, even in areas where they are capable of multi-channelling.

- Miles.

ABC coverage is good, abit bigger with the counters on the right might make things abit easier.

Nine is fairly useless unless you have a very HUGE TV and can read very quick.

The information changes too quickly for you to get an understanding of what is happening in the seat.

Maybe the TV networks think we all have 42" Plasma's or very small lounge rooms.

ABC Coverage is good, at least it is there (and in WS!!).

In Perth Nine aren't broadcasting it yet (not until 6:30pm Perth time).

By then it will probably be pretty much all decided.

Someone just posted images from Perth, so it must be on.

BTW, what is with 9 wasting the space above/below the picture with the graphics, they could have made the fonts twice the size.

Yes, it has been on 9 in Perth since 4:30pm.
