DannyR Posted October 4, 2004 Posted October 4, 2004 http://www.cdfreaks.com/news/10616 Besides Sony Pictures/Columbia TriStar and MGM which Sony recently purchased Hollywood’s movie companies have so far sat on the fence in the Blu-ray Disc vs. HD-DVD fight. Japan Today reports however that 20th Century Fox has now revealed that it will join Sony’s camp and release high definition movies in the Blu-ray Disc format. Twentieth Century Fox Film Corp, a major U.S. movie distributor, will adopt the Blu-ray disc standard for next-generation DVD players developed by Sony Corp and Matsushita Electric Industrial Co and other companies, the Nihon Keizai Shimbun reported Sunday. The economic daily said Twentieth Century Fox's move may give the Blu-ray disc standard an advantage over HD DVD, another format for DVD players developed by Toshiba Corp, NEC Corp and other companies. hypnotoad8128 Posted October 4, 2004 Posted October 4, 2004 I'm afraid that post is somewhat of a falsehood, which is typical for cdfreaks as they just cut and paste stories without actually checking them.. Fox haven't said were only releasing discs on the blue ray format. Fox have actually joined the blue-ray group in an advisory capacity, just like they have the HD-DVD camp. Just becuase they have joined the blue-ray comittee doesn't mean they will release discs solely on that format. Read the post at thedigitalbits.com for more.. Finally this morning, 20th Century Fox is expected to announce that it's joining the Blu-ray Disc Association in an advisory capacity. Fox says this is NOT an official endorsement of the format, but the studio wants to have a say in how these next-generation videodisc formats develop (Fox is already a longtime member of the DVD Forum, which is responsible for the development of the Blu-ray Disc rival, HD-DVD). The news services, of course, have already blown this story by claiming that Fox has now officially adopted the Blu-ray Disc format. Doh! So HD-DVD is far from dead, for now. Although I hope blue-ray wins in the end.. Superior quality in my eyes.

(Oh, and maybe something without such a childish name!)
Star1503559755 Posted October 5, 2004 Posted October 5, 2004 Sony have dreams of compression beyond realistic thoughts. They claim their ATRAC3plus at 48kbps MATCHES CD Quality. Let me assure you it is absolute rubbish, and even a person who is near deaf would agree the quality is not acceptable. They also beleive ATRAC3plus at 48kpbs is far superior to the Ipods 128kbps AAC format (which could do with a boost in bitrate, but is very generous considering Sony's 48). So now are we going to let Sony destroy HD with their High Definition format? NO. High Definiton at 1920x1080 4mbps MPEG 4 IS NOT acceptable. Looks good on a 68cm CRT via composite, even Foxtel looks great on a 68cm CRT. Wake up Sony and get out of your dream land. (Yes i have a major grudge against Sony)
ijd Posted October 5, 2004 Posted October 5, 2004 (edited) AFAIAC, Sony is (and always has been) the "Volvo" of the electronics world! Good quality ... but not great. Boxey ... but solid. Inventive ... but not innovative. Expensive ... and overpriced! Edited October 6, 2004 by ijd
Digicruiser Posted October 6, 2004 Posted October 6, 2004 Sony is (and always has been) the "Volvo" of the electronics world! "Good quality but not great"... They used to be. Their TVs in the recent past have been disappointing. Tube TV power supplies etc unstable; they have taken the cheaper way of dumbing the design (shortcuts) or not putting in the effort to make sure every funciton of the TV circuitry is A1 in performance. Too many shops get feedback how crap some of the models are. Not quite "Volvo" anymore unfortunately.
