Here is the story. Purchased the Teac DV-B800 HD Set Top box on Monday 27/9/04. Plugged it all in and then did an auto channel search. Found Channel 9 only, but no others! Channel 9 signal and quality strength was indicating excellent (over to the right on the meter). Ok, so now did another auto search, this time found SBS only and no others. Again the signal and quality were excellent. Every time I did an auto search it would only find one channel at a time and each found channel had excellent signal and quality. I have had a new antenna system installed, quad shielded coax, "F" connectors etc. The analogue signal is very good. I am line of sight to Mt Lofty here in Adelaide and the antenna is pointed straight at it. So next I tried a couple of boxes I have access to. First the LG, locked onto every channel without problem. Next I borrowed a mates DGTEC, again not a problem, top picture on all channels. So I phoned Teac Technical Support and got onto a bloke called Stavros. What am absolute joke!! I explained all the circumstances and I thought I was explaining all the occurences logically. But he did not want to listen and kept telling me it would not be one of their boxes at fault it would be the networks! I continually tried to explain all the facts but again it was "Sir, listen to me, it is not our box it is a network problem, lodge your complaint with them". I just couldn't believe what I was hearing. I read posts on this forum regarding Teac support and how good it is. Well they have certainly not impressed me with their absolute arrogance, ignorance and not trying to help one little bit! I will be taking this unit back to the Good Guys and if I don't receive any support there and Teac certainly don't seem to be willing to help I will be taking the matter up with our Business and Consumer Affairs. I had never bought a Teac item before and now listening to stories from other people at work that had Teac gear wish I never had! Teac if you monitor these forums, you have a support service, offer support not blame fixing networks when your equipment is obviously at fault.

A couple of suggestions before taking it back.

You may have too much signal at your place, try a 10 or 15 dB attenuator in the fly lead.

Try scaning the box at another location, say where the footy came from.

Try some rabbit ears, as short as possible, less than 350mm each ear.

Thanks George. Tried just a short flylead (1 metre) with me hanging on to it, and guess what, managed channels 2, 9 and 10! Who says you need a fancy antenna, coax and "F" connectors. So the too great a signal may be the problem. Will try the attenuator. Now why couldn't Teac offer the same advise!

Ahh Luxury! What I wouldn't do for "too much" signal?

I't digital not analog don't forget... it's actually a pain in the ass for digital - it made my unit cutout at the worst times, very intermittently, VERY hard to find!

Fester, Stavros is the same guy I dealt with at Teac regarding the problem with a horizontally stretched picture on Win. He was not very helpful, and I ended up returning the DV-B800 for a refund.

Well guess what, after being told that it couldn't be the Teac that was at fault and to lodge my complaint with the TV Networks, I went out and purchased a varible 75 ohm attenuator from Jaycar. Still did nothing for the Teac. So I took it back to The Good Guys. They tested it there and it did exactly the same thing. They exchanged it for a new one and it works perfectly! I am just very disappointed in the "Teac Total Care" in completely ignoring all the given facts and trying to blame the digital reception in my area, even though two other boxes I tested worked perfectly. Oh well, all is well now.

Teac (Stavros) did not believe the WIN horizontally stretched picture was a problem with the DV-B800, and tried to blame the broadcaster. He ignorned the fact that the WIN picture aspect ratio was correct on two other types of STB.
