I know we've done this topic to death.

But the quality of the ABC's SD transmission is so good, and so much of it is in WS, that it's just ridiculous for the news and current affairs to be still 4:3 (or is it 14:9?)

Maybe after the election? Anyone taking bets?

Speaking of the movie show, the PQ is so terrible i reckon they are just using 4:3 cameras and then chopping it and zooming in to a 16:9 frame. This could be totally wrong, but i've often thought it looked terrible.

I would agree, it does look a bit lower quality, but not HUGELY I don't think. Who knows what they are doing.

The quality of SD varies a lot in my opinion so theres no point in complaining about any of it. It's beyond our control!

You should all be pleasantly surprised to see SBS World News being presented in 16:9 as of Friday October 1, thus leaving the ABC as the only metro station still doing daily 4:3 news bulletins.

I'm not surprised because you posted it here but it is offical. ABC is going to be the last station (not including regional's) to broadcast 16:9 news.

Good work SBS.

SBS is now broadcasting news in widesceen with a fraction of the fundaing ABC recieves. Come on ABC, its about time to go widescreen with news and current affairs.

abc could have in most states gone 16:9 years ago, and all states 6 months ago. At least they are finally starting to shoot file footage in 16:9 and centrecutting for air.

In this case its not that simple. If you know what has happened with the ABC over the last few years you would have a better idea of the delay.

Both Sydney and Melbourne have relocated thier studios etc. Perth is in the proccess now. Part of these moves is to digitise the new buildings. All cameras (field & studio) are now 16:9/4:3 switchable. But until ALL capital cities are fully digital, it makes going fully 16:9 a bit hard, I will agree there is a some misunderstanding of wide screen with editing.

The camera people are fine with 16:9 or 4:3. The main problem is the ABC moves a hell of a lot of stories around Australia, some being edited in one place and airing in all capital cities. On top of this 99% of overseas footage is 4:3, so to go 16:9 will mean a lot of ACR conforming 4:3 incoming, archive footage etc.

The date has been set and it is new year when ALL of the ABC will go 16:9 at the same time. Yes some camera people are shooting some 16:9 base footage. Don't forget when I say ALL of the ABC, remember there are a lot of ABC cameras over seas as well.

SBS is in a similar posistion, but they only have one main studio if I'm correct. This makes going over to 16:9 much easier. To change the ABC news over to 16:9 at a reasonable cost is hard. What I mean here is not the cameras, but aditional equipment such as ARCs etc. Yes you throw millions at the problem, but as part owners the public might prefer a more prudent approach.

Also I think the news department is tring to ensure that when they go to 16:9, there will be a minimum of "wrong aspects" to air. In this they have been working on the logistics of the move since about July/August.

What, you don't just snap your fingers and everything is 16:9, how strange !!!!

Do I detect cynicism in your quote? How strange I feel the same!

Oh well, Christmas isn't that far away so we can wait can't we? Anyway, we want to give 4x3 TV owners the fun of getting a new WS TV for Christmas and then have the next present being: ABC going WS in their news and a new channel - can you think of a better present in Digital TV terms?

So if all forum members donate two dollars towards the "Get WS screen TVs for the unfortunate", we then can all enjoy the coming of ABC 16:9 news on a PROPER Wide-screen TV. DBA wanna get discounts for us loyal and time-giving forum members?

The question I wanna ask is, how much of a dent in ABC plans (all) had occured, when they prematurely shut down KIDS and FLY due to budget concerns? DId this delay the WS plans for news etc?

I also thinks it bloody ludicrous that the ABC news is still in 4:3. I also find it very amusing that the 7:30 Report is broadcast in 4:3, and Carey sits there talking to his guests on the 16:9 plasma screen. They are then panned and scanned, cine-ed or whatever the terminology is, up to 16:9 from a 4:3 shot. Laughable...

Actually, some of the shots on the 7:30 report plasma are 16:9 from the source with no ARC'ing.

Well, I'm yet to see them. I've been watching that that show on my 16:9 Xelos in 4:3 mode for the last year or so. Every time I see a guest from another ABC studio interviewed, it is so blatantly zoomed up to fill the screen. When they put the whole image of the guest on the screen you get the full picture. When they pull out of the shot and show the plasma, with Carey sitting on the side, the shot has mysteriously lost quite a few inches off the top and bottom of it. Maybe it only happens to interviewees in other Australian ABC studios?

cheers

I'm sure the ABC will welcome your help if you want to come in and sort them out for the least amount of money.

Well, they have had it (usually only on the Canberra footage).

C'mon guys ... we have known for months that the ABC is working on a simultaneous 16:9 news rollout throughout their network, rather than a piecemeal job like the commercials have done.

I just hope that they do the whole job ... not just the aspect ratio but also up-to-date N&N on sub-channels (are you listening, Ten and SBS?!!), a VPG? (are you listening, 4+3?!!), DD5.1, correct clock, somebody quality controlling broadcasts (are you listening, Nine?!!), etc.

Sheeeesh ... if we provided services to these broadcasters at the same low quality that they service us ... they would have us arrested for fraud!!!!

2i cents,

Ian

It doesnt quite look zoomed... it seems to be a combination of zoom and horizontal stretch, as well as taking advantage of what is normally overscanned by most tvs... it's a weird effect

The image on the Plasma is normally 4:3. The studio trends to leave this full screen in a "squashed" mode.
