dB_currumbin Posted September 18, 2004 Posted September 18, 2004 Hi, As of Friday some time I seem to have completely lost ABC and SBS digital services from Tamborine. I recall reading in here somewhere about scheduled downtime while they move to the new tower. Has everyone lost them, or is it just me? Any idea when they'll be back? dB.
Tweet Posted September 19, 2004 Posted September 19, 2004 As a last resort you could relocate your antenna. I use a 91 element 'X' UHF antenna with a masthead amp on a rotatable 20 foot metal mast, this allows me to finely rotate the antenna for perfect siteing of the transmitter. As the antenna has high gain and very high directivity precise siteing is possible, plus inputting into a Masthead amp with variable gain allows me to trim signal strength, and as a result I get perfect reception of all channels from an otherwise compromised location. jeevis Posted September 19, 2004 Posted September 19, 2004 I also lost ABC QLD and SBS on Friday. I just barely get ABC NSW, but it always breaks up...hopefully wont be down too long
dB_currumbin Posted September 19, 2004 Author Posted September 19, 2004 This is really weird. I took my STB up to a mate's place at Mudgereba and get all channels fine there, including SBS and ABC off Tamborine. I bring it back here to Currumbin (where my antenna points to Tamborine) and I can get all channels at 100% except for SBS and ABC which both come in a 0%. And yet up until Friday I've always got 100% on ABC and SBS. Whatever changed to Tamborine's ABC and SBS signals on Friday, it only seems to adversely affect some areas. Jeevis, which suburb are you in?
jeevis Posted September 19, 2004 Posted September 19, 2004 I'm in Currumbin, 300 meters from the currumbin tower...but too many trees in between me and the cancer stick so I'm pointing at Mt. Tam...
dB_currumbin Posted September 19, 2004 Author Posted September 19, 2004 Interesting..... sounds like we're almost neighbours. I wonder if it's actually something that has changed at Currumbin on Friday that is causing interference with our signal from Tamborine. I too am less than 300m from Currumbin tower.
dB_currumbin Posted September 20, 2004 Author Posted September 20, 2004 I just spoke to a very helpful person at SBS. She said that last Wednesday they increased power from Currumbin, which might be blasting over the top of our signal from Mt. Tamborine. To investigate further, they need more faults logged, so I'd encourage Jeevis or anyone else who lives near Currumbin, gets their signal from Tamborine and recently started to have problems to contact them. You can call them on 1800 500 727 and ask for Network Operations, or you can email them on technical@sbs.com.au.
jeevis Posted September 20, 2004 Posted September 20, 2004 I called SBS and told them. Today in the wind I lost just about every chanel...digital tele is very buggy at the moment...

jeevis Posted September 20, 2004 Posted September 20, 2004 I WAS getting ABC earlier tonight, but can't now...and NBN only works half the time. it's making it hard for me to justify buying my Topfield box for $1000 to my wife....
chuppa Posted September 20, 2004 Posted September 20, 2004 it's making it hard for me to justify buying my Topfield box for $1000 to my wife.... Print this page out and take it to DJ's Robina or Harvey Norman Indro. May make it easier justifyin 875 instead of 1000 Steve

Maybe give it another two weeks for the transmissions to go full power and see the situation then?

Just ask for Phil. I got one last weekend for $875 and he should have no problem price matching his own price
dB_currumbin Posted September 20, 2004 Author Posted September 20, 2004 The same scenario here, except I'm in Tallai. ABC/SBS were perfect Friday but are crap now. hmmm... there goes the theory that it's only impacting people that live near Currumbin tower. I hope you called it in (see SBS contact details earlier). The more data points they have, the more likely they are to be able to locate the problem.

dB_currumbin Posted September 23, 2004 Author Posted September 23, 2004 Fixed, as of today some time ABC and SBS have gone from ziltch to 100%. Just got a helpful follow up call from them to ensure today's fix solved my problem. The solution was a software update to the Currumbin transmitter to make sure it stays in perfect time sync with the Tamborine transmitter. The two had drifted out of sync. Aparently if you live very close to one, but get your signal off the other, and they get out of sync, then the close transmitter can totally corrupt the signal from the remote transmitter.
