gwplum Posted September 17, 2004 Posted September 17, 2004 I recently purchased the now superceded Panasonic Plasma TH-50PHW6AZ. I thought I was being clever and bought the DVI expansion card as an addition so I could get an HD box with DVI-D out. When I read the instructions however I find that it will only do 576p at 50hz - will do 1080i but at 60hz. Am I stuffed as far as using this DVI slot to watch (true) HD? Do I have any options? Would I be able to get a DVD player that will be OK with 60hz?
Mr.Bitey Posted September 17, 2004 Posted September 17, 2004 gwplum, Sorry to be the verifier of bad news, but as fas as I know, for PAL material - your in trouble. for NTSC material you are OK :-) You will not be able to get smooth 1080i HD DTV broadcasts in Aust. Even if you get a DVD player that will output 60hz, you will have issues if you play a PAL dvd. EDIT: If you spoke with the sales person about hooking up a HD STB to it, to watch HD broadcasts, if they didnt tell you it was 60hz only then yes you can return it as you were not made aware of this serious issue. You told the salesperson what you wanted it to do, and it clearly doesnt - this meets 'not fit for purpose' and you should be able to expect a full-refund under statuatory conditions law. You do not have to accept their offer for store credit. If they are a pain - get onto your local consumer affairs dept. If you paid on visa card you can always block the payment :-) as the goods were not fit for purpose (easy way around them being a pain). Cheers, Bitey

You should be able to swap it over. If over a week its a bit harder but all is not lost. Start jumping up and down about it - no way I'd sit tight with a HD plasma that can't view HD in aust. Get in touch with the retailer who sold it to you first - and do it quick.
gwplum Posted September 17, 2004 Author Posted September 17, 2004 Thanks guys for verifying what I thought was the situation. Unfortunately its over a week but I'll get onto the retailer today and see what I can do. Also unfortunately for me I'm not sure it was a case of misprepresentation - I asked for it, they didn't offer it - however they did know why I was asking for it and why I was buying it and didn't warn or stop me - I suspect cause they didn't know either! Anyway thanks again for the responses they are most helpful. Cheers Greg
gclark8 Posted September 17, 2004 Posted September 17, 2004 The old footy can be made to putput 60hz, search the forum... voila: http://www.dtvforum.info/index.php?showtopic=3828&hl=60hz
cummo Posted September 17, 2004 Posted September 17, 2004 Hi gwplum, I have the 42" HD Panasonic and feed foxtel to it via an external scaler using the vga port. With the variety of resolutions available to use at 48 to 75hz, the one that provides the best picture is 1080i @ 59.94hz. That said, I'm unsure how a dvi feed would look at 60hz. I know that UK users are using dvi for their HTPC's. Now that you have the blade, you may as well try it with some of the new HD STB's. If there is a problem with STB's you can still use the dvi input for a computer or connect a 576P DVD player @ 50hz. via dvi. I have been considering the purchase of the blade myself and am interested to see how you go with it.
Peter D Posted September 17, 2004 Posted September 17, 2004 How did you buy the DVI input card? It is not sold in Australia. My understanding that the reason it is not sold is because it is not compatible with what we broadcast.
cummo Posted September 17, 2004 Posted September 17, 2004 How did you buy the DVI input card? It is not sold in Australia. My understanding that the reason it is not sold is because it is not compatible with what we broadcast. It has always been an option through Panasonic in Australia. I have rang their out-sourced spare part division for pricing and availability on several occasions. How compatible it is with other equipment is another question.
Peter D Posted September 17, 2004 Posted September 17, 2004 When I was doing my research when buying a plasma I was told that DVI was not available in Australia. But I might rephrase my previous post after checking some other threads. It appears that while the DVI input is not listed as an option in Australia you can get it if you ask for it.
