Gold Coast Bulletin 14/9

Free-TV goes digital

14Sep04

THE revolution is perhaps not asdramatic as black and white to colour, but digital television has arrived on the Gold Coast and looks set to become the new standard.

Free-to-view digital TV became a workable reality for locals yesterday when the commercial networks began digital broadcasts.

The ABC and SBS have been transmitting digital signals on the Coast since August, 2002, but the number of local channels, and attempts to allay existing analogue black-spot problems, delayed the commercial networks.

Seven, Prime, Ten, Southern Cross Ten, Nine and NBN commenced broadcasting yesterday from the existing Mt Tamborine and Currumbin TV towers.

All free-to-view channels are now available on the Coast and the roll out of the technology is causing a sales boom for digital television and set-top box retailers.

Digital TV is transmitted in short bursts rather than as a continuous signal and offers clearer pictures and sound, widescreen images and interactive programming.

TV networks across the country will continue to broadcast both an analogue and digital signal until at least 2008, but digital TV will eventually eclipse analogue transmissions.

Palm Beach local Evan Davis bought digital TV equipment two years ago in anticipation of the shift in technology. 'It was a bit like Christmas coming after waiting all this time,' he said.

'Brisbane has had (digital TV) since the beginning of 2001.

'The commercial channels were supposed to start here in August, 2003, but there were some problems with the digital antennae on the Mt Tamborine tower.

'There was construction work done on the tower to target black-spot areas.

'There could be people in (analogue) black-spots who can now get digital TV.'Mr Davis has been closely following the progress of the transmission towers and was excited to finally receive a crystal-clear, widescreen picture.

'It's something that everyone is going to have to get eventually,' he said.

'The quality (of the new transmissions) is pretty good. 'The Brisbane Lions game this weekend will be in widescreen and being a Lions fan that's one thing I'm looking forward to.'

To receive free-to-view digital broadcasts locals need to buy a set-top box to connect to their existing TV, or a TV that is already integrated with digital technology.

Manager of JB Hi-Fi Bundall, Raelene Mitchell, said a standard set-top box cost about $180.

Don't worry Evan, you did well. You didn't have a hope in hell of escaping because you were targetted :)

I hope the print version doesn't have that error with "asdramatic".

THE revolution is perhaps not asdramatic as black and white to colour

My sister gets frustrated after putting a lot of work into getting an article just right and then the subs come along and butcher it and add errors into it that weren't there in the original :)

The Bully is actually pretty bad for spelling mistakes and stuff. I'm surprised.

Evan,

Can I come and work at your place just for a day...............

It seems such a waste to miss using all that useful material.......

Working where I work means no gambling at Star City

Unless you want to work at my place, in which case I have a heap of cleaning up to do..... any good with dishes and a vacuum??? :P

I'd do it myself, but I'm busy watching the TV.

Hi

Does anyone know the approx. range(in K's) of Transmissions from Tambourine when Stations go onto full Power.? Friend in Brunswick/Ocean Shore Region cannot pick up(this week) with UHF on tall mast and same story for myself near Ballina. Just wondering if its worth chasing signal with better Aerials or is it a lost cause. Access to Bris. Stations would be very handy.

Basil I would just stick trying to look at Mt Nardi near Lismore.

As for your friend in Brunswick I am picking up Tamborine from Brisbane now!

Hi

I'm back and forward from Sydney but access to the Brisbane Stations are a temptation, but i notice in a post elsewhere a member in Murwillumbah is not picking up(i don't know how hard he tried, aerial wise)the Gold Coast. I just thought someone might know the expected 'footprint'(or whatever the latest term is) of the Tambourine Transmissions when they go onto full Power.

Regards

Basil
