blybo Posted July 3, 2017 Posted July 3, 2017 On Saturday we took delivery of a Tempur Hydra Cloud QS (soft feel) mattress and bed base. Anybody else have experience with these? We have put on a Tempur mattress protector which is a stretchy material but the bed feels WAY firmer than the 1 we lay on in store. We even bought a stretchy jersey fitted sheet to help the mattress feel closer to what we experienced in store but no joy and a very pi55ed off wife after spending $2500 on something that feels worse than the latex one it replaces. Do they just need to break in? My wife cracked it last night (3rd night) and slept on our 11 year old latex mattress in the spare room. It feels like you are sleeping in soft sand or clay where you do sink into it as you'd expect but then very firm once settled into position. It's got to the stage my wife is convinced they have sent us the wrong model. I'm going back to Hardley Normal today to discuss.
koputai Posted July 3, 2017 Posted July 3, 2017 They do take a bit of getting used to. It probably took me three or four weeks, but now I love our Tempur (not sure what model, it was over $4k). It doesn't conform to your body instantly, it takes a few minutes. Persevere if you can, it will be worth it in a few weeks. Cheers, Jason.
James May Posted July 3, 2017 Posted July 3, 2017 (edited) Ours took a while to either wear in from memory, that, or we just got used to it. I find the firmness on ours varies massively with temperature also, feels completely different in summer compared to winter. I actually look forward to the cooler months as I love getting into bed when it's cold and the mattress is at its firmest. That's obviously personal preference though. The difference between a summer and winter night has to be felt to be believed, was it a lot warmer when you tried it in the store, compared to your bedroom? If it turns out the same as you tried, maybe give it a chance to wear in and also consider warming the room up before bed if it's cold? Edited July 3, 2017 by JamesMay 1
~Spyne~ Posted July 4, 2017 Posted July 4, 2017 What James has said. Memory foam is very dependent on temperature - the colder it is the firmer the mattress will be and the longer it will take to conform to your body (as your body slowly 'softens' the mattress where you lay). It also retains heat much more than a traditional mattress, so in warm weather they can be quite stifling. Personally, I really disliked the mattresses that were all memory foam (like Tempur), much preferring composites that used either latex + pocket coil designs or what we have now which is wool over memory foam over coils.
MusicOne Posted July 4, 2017 Posted July 4, 2017 I've had a memory foam mattress for about 12 months and it works just fine for me. I probably won't go with one the next time around, simply because I think I prefer a conventional mattress and besides, you can only use one side of a memory foam mattress.....or at least that's how mine works....one side only.
MusicOne Posted July 4, 2017 Posted July 4, 2017 @blybo Neil, maybe try using an electric blanket, just to warm the bed before using it. In winter, the memory foam can be slightly firm until it warms up.
blybo Posted July 4, 2017 Author Posted July 4, 2017 Thanks for all replies. I've read also walking over them can help break them in so have done that. I've checked the label on our shipping carton and indicates 25cm thickness, we bought the superseded top of range which pretty sure is 27cm. If you can believe RRP on mattresses this one was originally around $7k, plus we got a free tilting bed base... so a great deal. We will probably hardly ever use the tilt function as we don't watch tv or read in bed, but might be nice for Mother's Day etcBeing heavier I'm going to swap sides with my wife tonight and see if she feels any difference... But have to make sure we actually have what we paid for.
Martykt Posted July 4, 2017 Posted July 4, 2017 I haven't had a mattress but have had a memory foam pillow @blybo. Sorry to those who like the memory foam but I detested it. What I found is that it keeps compressing as it's designed to do then feels hard as a rock. I went back to latex which is designed to spring back (for my pillow and mattress) and haven't looked back since.
joz Posted July 4, 2017 Posted July 4, 2017 We recently bought a new bed with all the foam topping. Like you my wife was very hesitant about it for the first ten days. Even I thought they delivered the wrong model, we both love it now. 1

I probably have an old one lying around you could have had.

It was the 27 that was around 7k but can confirm we got what we wanted and paid for. I suspect in a week all will be forgiven Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
GregWormald Posted July 4, 2017 Posted July 4, 2017 Now I know why I like a waterbed. (Cheap, widely adjustable at home, heated in winter, cool in summer, ...) Greg
Guest jakeyb77 Posted July 6, 2017 Posted July 6, 2017 (edited) I can't have one as I'm 120kgs and have back issues I have to have a firm mattress. The heat also puts me off but I have to say @blybo I do love the look and feel. It just doesn't suit me long term. I hope yours comes good. I do however use a spinal-eze pillow. It was $180 or so. But it's losing its integrity and I'll go back to a Denton pillow. They do take time to get used to which is often a pain when choosing bedding. How are you meant to make and important multi thousand $ purchase while lying down in Harvey Norman for 15 minutes or less? Especially with a commission based vulture hovering over you. I really want to try a Koala mattress next. 120 day return policy. Although I was put off to learn that they request you put a review on product review which may account for their amazing star rating. Anyone here tried one? Edited July 6, 2017 by jakeyb77
blybo Posted July 7, 2017 Author Posted July 7, 2017 ive come from a latex so this feels cool compared to that. Getting better every night. I may have to sleep on my wifes side a couple of nights for the extra weight to help break it in. @Jakeyb77, they do make a firm version, my parents have one and so firm they have put a soft topper on it. I would of thought a memory foam would be good for a bad back, after an adjustment period as they are supportive despite being soft.
Guest jakeyb77 Posted July 12, 2017 Posted July 12, 2017 Pulled the trigger on a Koala Mattress. Ordered on Sunday afternoon. Delivered Monday morning. $950 delivered for a Queen size. 120 day return policy. They pick it up for a full refund. Two nights in and my GF and I have both slept through till the alarm goes off and tjat never happens. Time will tell but I am very impressed so far. Also with the heater and doona etc. I used to get hot. This mattress is in a comfy temp zone all night.
