firefly0071 Posted July 2, 2017 Posted July 2, 2017 (edited) Hello SNA, I am looking forward to upgrading my existing entertainment unit (furniture for TV, BD/4K player, receiver etc to be place on or under). I can't find online whether home theatre unit that would accommodate my existing home theatre equipment: - 55 inch oled TV - receiver - power amplifier for Left and Right speakers - centre speaker - BD player (quite small) - Xbox and other video consoles Most don't have another for extra equipment or the height (like for a centre speaker or receiver) . The other issue is cable control. Lots of power cables. Most entertainment units don't consider a receiver etc. Apart from a custom made, is there a product line suitable for my needs? I hope people don't think I am too fussy. Benny Edited July 2, 2017 by firefly0071 spelling
betty boop Posted July 2, 2017 Posted July 2, 2017 benny you can also DIY...and am talking DIY of the very basic level. push some stuff together thats been cut up for you at very low cost and very low time investment. not sure kind of thing after. but its approach i took as couldnt realy find anything that suited and didnt want to pay for some custom thing... especially since went for something modular that can be readily also changed and modified anytime feel like it and again at very low time and cost investment can check my signature if indeed kind of thing looking for. 2
diesel459 Posted July 2, 2017 Posted July 2, 2017 It may not be high enough for you but you could build a stand like they do in demonstrations. https://www.tivolihifi.com/product/furniture/bdi-corridor-8179-media-cabinet
~Spyne~ Posted July 3, 2017 Posted July 3, 2017 Can be DIY'd relatively easy... 2 or 3 laminated panels from Bunnings (or your local timber supplier)...depending on how wide you need the unit you can keep them whole or cut in half. To space the shelves you can either use legs, painted/oiled how ever you like or get a mate that welds to make you a box frame to bolt between shelves.

With the qubelok that used from local aluminium centre you don't even have to weld. Just push together and they cut all size for you. Not complex either height is uprights gap between shelves size width and length wise is just dimensions of shelves .... 2

We recently got a laminated "oak" (read blackbutt) top for a new desk (still WIP). It was wrapped up in plastic and said it was sanded etc. BS....I spent close to 10 days finishing it - clear filled expoy for the veins, sanding, sanding sealer, more sanding, lime washing, finish/sand/finish/sand about 6 times, then final buff. It looks great, but a huge amount of work. What was $130 for the timber, and chewed through about $50 of sandpaper, and another $50 in finishing supplies. This also assumes you've got a good efficient sander (like my Festools) I dont like it but you could keep it real simple and go down the threaded rod approach Edited July 3, 2017 by Peter the Greek

GRP Posted July 5, 2017 Posted July 5, 2017 So many different styles out there. Based on my own shopping for new unit for a second HT setup last year, most commerical units are designed for looks with little consideration as to real world requirements. The all too common centre support post or panel which prevents installation of a centre speaker, or spaces simply not large enough to install a large amp. I ended up with one of these https://www.thegoodguys.com.au/tauris-tv-cabinet-1800mm-black-titan1800blk from Good Guys at well under the online price. Needs enlargement of rear holes for cooling and I installed a slider shelf for the AVR but otherwise very pleased with it. 1
firefly0071 Posted July 5, 2017 Author Posted July 5, 2017 I can see that cable management is also an issue.
Jventer Posted July 5, 2017 Posted July 5, 2017 I have something very similar to this from Harvey Norman, in black. http://www.harveynorman.com.au/furniture-outdoor-bbqs/living-room/tv-units/vector-1600mm-entertainment-unit.html It is a bit low for the centre speaker, you can either put it on top or in the "open space". I used the latter, with feet in the front to tilt it upwards. I added extra shelves behind the doors as required and drilled lots of holes at the back for cable management. Heat might be a problem with the doors, but usb powered fans connected to usb chargers, AVR, blu ray player and mac mini keep things cool. Also like what @GRP said above.
GRP Posted July 5, 2017 Posted July 5, 2017 As Jveneter points out, doors do create heat issues but adding a fan these days is so easy. Alternatively the doors can be left off the unit I bought. With 7.1 sound and a few inputs cable management is something else. Velcro cable ties are a wonderful thing. 1

Thanks Al, the side braces are powder coated aluminium strips from Bunnings, that go with one of their industrial shelving units, but they've changed the design so don't have them anymore. The stand above the BW is the top shelf and cut down legs from a Kmart shoe rack, just spray painted black. I really don't like stacking components on top of each other so I've placed the Apple TV4 and the Telstra TV on that. The wheels are the most recent addition, due to the weight it was too hard to move it in and out without wheels. I got the guys at work to cut me some steel plate to the correct size and bought casters from Bunnings, there's a plate at either end and two under the middle, due to the weight of the Elektra. It's so much easier if I need to get behind there now. 1

Sold as a kit to install. https://www.lifestylestore.com.au/sanus-cadenza-75-equipment-cabinet.html one thing I wouldn't do is put a centre speaker "into" an enclosure. additionally be careful with enclosed units. as can cause heat build up. even with a grill front. want to have a complete open back. units want some way to have fresh air enter at the bottom exit out the top some where to aid natural convection. its one of the things open units have to benefit. if considering enclosed units, for the 2ch side, I run an ikea unit, glass fronts, complete open backs I still wouldn't put anything inside the cabinet behind doors that is going to be generating anything significant heat wise. so only things inside the cabinet as can see is TT power supply, 2ch pre (solid state). the stuff that could generate a bit of heat(as little as they do) is valve dac, valve phono pre amp and the blue sound node 2. and my TT which is in the open but has its own dust cover. is the reason doors important in family areas to keep kids out ? 1
firefly0071 Posted July 10, 2017 Author Posted July 10, 2017 The doors to prevent kids from mucking around with the electronics. You have a valid point of heat dispersion.

firefly0071 Posted July 13, 2017 Author Posted July 13, 2017 I ended up ordering the Sanus https://www.lifestylestore.com.au/sanus-cadenza-75-equipment-cabinet.html I get an 8 percent discount..
