Hi all, just a quick query for roon users; I hope someone can help me out!!!

I have an ethernet-only network at home, and am currently using a SBT as my Roon endpoint; the Roon core is on a PC in the room next to my listening room.

Currently I can play/pause/skip music from the SBT, but any other searches/changes/etc have to be conducted from the core PC; it's in the next room so not a major drama, but not ideal. However, I'm thinking of a) updating to a microrendu or similar, and b) moving my music room to the garage, so I'd ideally need to be able to do all Roon functions from the listening room in either of these cases.

So here's my question: can I get a basic android tablet, connect it to my ethernet network, download Roon Remote on it, and then use it to control Roon (as long as it's still connected to the network)?

If anyone can confirm this is possible it'll certainly open up my options a lot!!!!

Thanks in advance for the help folks!!!!

Cheers, Steve :-)

That's similar to want to achieve, I have ordered a android tv box which I will connect to tv and control with wireless mouse for Roon. I was advised by this on the Roon community page so hopefully works.

I don't know of any tablets that have an ethernet port let a lone a cheap android one but there may be some out there. Possibly a mini laptop could be used with an ethernet port?

I would either change your modem router to a wifi capable one or you could at a range extender in your new room (or anywhere in range). I used a netgear one, plug in an ethernet cable and it will provide wifi from there

Yes, perhaps a mini laptop is a better option, although there are apparently ethernet to micro USB adapters which could work with a tablet. So am I correct in thinking that as long as it's connected to my network, any device can operate as a Roon remote?

Can I ask why the reluctance for wifi?

It's designed to work that way and a wifi enabled router/modem is dirt cheap these days, would be harder to find one without wifi. Could probably just buy a little netbook laptop or tablet to control from your sweet spot.

I have a good friend in IT who's spent a lot of time in the "grey" (lets call it that) area of technology, and he's adamant that constant expose to WIFi radiation (ie 24/7) is definitely not a good thing; for me it's a conscious choice to add some inconvenience but save my brain and body from at least this one level of radiation. I don't want this thread to be a debate about this issue, and I'm aware that there are many other forms of EMR that we can't avoid, so just want to confirm that an ethernet-only setup like I've described is possible... :-)

You can do it if you can find a basic  tablet with ethernet.  Not many like that. Maybe a basic laptop ro 2in1 running windows or android.

Also, check on the Roon Community about the HW/SW requirements for Android. You don't want something so basic/outmoded that it won't run the Roon app.

Any device that will run Roon. Not every device will.

I like Roon very much and now use it all the time to play my files which are on an Antipodes DX.  Connection to Roon can be simple and not so simple.  My phone which is Android connects easily via WjFi to my network with Roon Ready.  The phone is not particularly user friendly with Roon as there is so much on screen it is not overly readable.

My desk top PC connects very easily via Ethernet and is very usable.  My Android tablets are problematic.  The Nexus 7 doesn’t work and that is probably to do with the installed version of Android.  I bought a Lenovo.  It connects perfectly to the Antipodes DX with either Bubble or Orange Squeeze.  Roon Ready is very flaky.  It will connect one day and then not the next.  Or I have to waist many hours before it will connect and meanwhile I have to use the PC which is in another room.  I do not know why.  It has improved marginally with the latest version of Roon Ready.  Regrettably it is still not at the same level as Bubble or Orange Squeeze with reliable connection.

For me there are so many positives about Roon and I consider that it was a value investment.  However my advice is try to test drive any Android tablet before you purchase a tablet.

Thanks for all the tips folks; it seems I'm better off to get a cheaper windows laptop (that meets min requirements) and use it as my remote. Now to start searching Fleabay!! :-)

You can also get some WiFi modems that have a WiFi button on the back, to switch WiFi on and off easily (without going into the settings of the modem each time).

That way you can avoid having WiFi on 24/7.  It only needs to be on when you're listening to music and using a tablet for Roon Remote?

Yeah I know; but I'd prefer a cable solution so I don't need to worry about it, especially given that the garage I'll be setting up is a fair distance from the router and would probably need repeaters/etc. Would just be a hassle I think...

Both Samsung and Microsoft sell a USB-to-Ethernet cable adapter that'll go into their respective tablets.

You'll be fine as such. No reason any program shouldn't work.

What you want to achieve is certainly possible.

Seems a netbook or cheap laptop would be the solution.

I understand your reluctance to have wifi on all the time and without trying to derail into a debate about it, I'm guessing you've moved to the country with no neighbours, cos chances are if you haven't there may be many wifi networks active nearby anyway.

I have an iMac as my Roon core and with my phone or the kids iPad's/iPods as remotes on wifi, Roon works pretty good. Only glitch so far is if I start a track playing from a remote and then change tracks from the core I get both the current and new track playing at the same time.

But both the core and remotes can have the wifi turned off at will.

This works for me, actually find it better than a windows PC. A cheap $50 android box, ethernet in and connected to TV.
