Extra Info:

Selling my Doge 8 pre amp.  I purchased this about two years ago from the original owner.  It's the SCR version with has the upgraded French SCR caps.   The original owner had Dallas Clark disconnect the gain switch and the MM/MC switches at the back.  Apparently this makes for a huge improvement in the phono stage.   Subsequently is it MM only with no gain options.   I've had another Doge 8 pre in the past and found that the MM phono pre was really good but the MC was pretty crap.   This is probably why the recommended mod does away with the MC option - nothing really lost.   Apparently Dallas Clark told the original owner that it was a very well designed, built and great sounding pre.

It is in very good condition with no visible marks or scratches.   When I first bought it it had a quad set of Mullards in the line stage and another quad set in the phono stage.  I was looking for the sound I had with my previous Doge 8 so I tracked down a quad set of JAN GE and also Siemens ECC801S tubes.   For the line stage I found the best combo was two JAN GE's and two Siemens ECC801S tubes.  It gives it enough valve rush and tubeiness without being too tubey (if you know what I mean).  Any other combo I found to be a little forward in the upper midrange.  This may be equipment dependent as the original owner loved the quad Mullards.   Anyway, it will come with two spare JAN GE's 12AU7's, two Siemens ECC801S (cost about $50 each second hand) for the line stage, four Mullard 12AX7's for the phono stage and the original Chinese 12AU7's and 12AX7's it came with.  The total value of the extra tubes would be around $300. It's fitted with the well regarded motorised blue alps volume control pot.

I has a pretty full complement of analogue inputs and outputs including XLR out.   I've been using it for a while to drive a pair of ATC active studio monitors.

As an idea of how it sounds I recently had a new Elektra pre, the Doge saw the Elektra off quite easily.  In the past it's also seen off a Primare pre as well.

It also has the remote control plus the owner's manual (in Chinese but you get the idea).

The only issue of note is that one of the led lights for the tuner input indicator is sometimes a lighter blue that the others, sometimes it's fine.  The rest work perfectly.

It's a terrific pre and it's the third one I've had.  My very first was sold off for a highly regarding fully digital processing unit.  This lasted a little while and then I went searching for another Doge and ended up with the one I had.  The second term of ownership made way for yet another go at the digital processing unit, again this made way for the Doge I have up for sale now.   I'm selling as I have another which I have grown quite fond of.   I'd be more than happy to keep both but I am fund raising for another hifi scheme so something has to go.

I don't have a box or packaging.  It's quite heavy and with all the other valves to include I'd prefer not to post.   If I have to I will but at the buyer's expense.   Weight of about 17 kg's (for a pre!!!!!!).

Demonstrations welcome.

Why do I feel a midlife crisis coming on. :P:P   You are selling up your pride and joys.

Can we expect there will be a shiny red convertible in the driveway in no time?    I bags 'shotgun'.:thumb:

Maybe I should get a job where they give me a shiny new car every year and I wouldn't have to worry about getting the new soft top!

Okay folks, this pre is on the market again.  It was sold at the time of this ad but I had to sort out a problem with another pre I had as well as chasing down a valve noise with the Doge Pre which came up out of the blue.  The valve noise turned out to be a mis seated valve so just a little push and it's been perfect since.   I solved the problem with the other pre in the meantime so that was sorted first and was sold off.

I'm now using a pre/dac so the Doge is up for sale.  Same condition as above apart from being in my possession a little longer.   It's still a great pre and I still find the valve combo I use to be the best combo.

I'd prefer local pick up but ultimately can pack for transport.  All transport costs at buyer's expense AND although I will pack very well and damages in transit are at the buyer's risk.

I may re-advertise this in a new post as this thread will be pretty low down the list now.
