cheekyboy Posted June 18, 2017 Posted June 18, 2017 (edited) Hi folks, I've been sitting here this morning enjoying a coffee and listening to one of my latest vinyl acquisitions, Jason Isbell's "Southeastern" and I'm thinking, wow, how good is this and how fortunate am I, to be able to enjoy this exceptional album on equipment that actually allows me to hear every nuance of Isbell's performance. The reproduction is stunning and I can highly recommend this album to you, particularly if you're a fan of the country/rock genre. I am fortunate to be using the fabulous Soulines Kubrick DCX turntable and fitted with what I feel is one of the very best tonearms in the world today, the Brinkmann 10.5. I have fitted the Binkmann EMT ti phono cartridge to the 10.5 arm and this combination is one made in heaven, as these two work so beautifully together. It is wonderful and a little surprising too, that after 48 years since I bought my own first vinyl album, that I am still able to enjoy the whole experience of playing a vinyl record and for me it is still by far my preferred source for my music. Yes, Dave and I are vinyl enthusiasts, we honestly don't pretend to be anything other than that too and Wyndham Audio does have a focus or emphasis on vinyl related equipment for that reason. We love what we experience with our own vinyl reproduction in our own systems and we would like our customers and you, the vinyl buying public out there, to also enjoy the same level of playback that we do. We recommend, use personally and sell exclusively Graham Slee Projects phono preamps and I'm listening myself this morning through the Slee Reflex M and Slee Elevator EXP combination for LOMC. I'm convinced that the Slee phono preamps play a huge part in achieving the stunning reproduction that I'm experiencing here this morning. Slee's phono stages are if nothing else honest in their reproduction and they are designed to extract the very last bit of detail as laid down in those grooves at the time of recording. I've been facilitating the Slee Loaner Program here in Australia for Graham now for many years and the loaner program allows you to trial most of his phono preamps in your system free of charge for up to three weeks at a time. Anyhow, I'm going to get back to spinning a few more albums today, but if you're thinking about vinyl as I am right now and you think we may be able to help you get the very best out of your vinyl rig, don't hesitate to get in touch. mwhouston Posted June 18, 2017 Posted June 18, 2017 Just looking the Slee preamp I notice the wide loadings selection. Not hard to do with two switches but I would think too many choices. On all of my DIY MC preamps I have at least two 100 and 50ohms. The reason for this is most MC carts work well with 100ohms. But my Ortofon Rondo Blue works best with 50ohms. Of course you can use 100ohms without any issues and may struggle to pick the diffidence. But Ortofon suggest 50ohms and so I use it. I build for myself but there is always a chance of a sale, thus the two loadings. But with a single switch you can provide three loadings. The switch must support center off. On a few MC stages I have had 220, 100 and 50ohm selections. This allows those who would normally use 100ohms to experiment with a lighter load. It also works for me with my 50ohm loading. It is so very easy to do and good to see the better phono stage providing it. 2
cheekyboy Posted June 20, 2017 Author Posted June 20, 2017 Hi Mark, @mwhouston the preamp you're referring to is Slee's step up amplifier for LOMC, the Elevator EXP. You're right, the majority of LOMC cartridges will work fine at the 100 ohm setting, but there are many cartridges available that are little fussy when it comes to loading, and the Elevator does offer a wide spread of loading settings for that reason, as you say. scuzzii Posted July 19, 2017 Posted July 19, 2017 Keith I enjoy Jason on my setup as well. I reckon you will also enjoy hearing Nashville Sound, his latest. Recording may not be as good as Southeastern (I'm still undecided on this) but IMO the music is better. Cant wait to add the Brinkman to my setup soon.. See you Saturday! John 4
scuzzii Posted July 19, 2017 Posted July 19, 2017 If anyone is interested in listening to a similar setup in Sydney and meeting Keith this sat, drop me a PM. I have a couple of spots left. 1
cheekyboy Posted July 19, 2017 Author Posted July 19, 2017 (edited) Thanks, John, and yes I'm looking forward to being in Hornsby on Saturday afternoon and would really enjoy meetings some new faces from SNA and enjoying John's sensational system. Cheers, Keith Edited July 19, 2017 by cheekyboy
scuzzii Posted July 22, 2017 Posted July 22, 2017 Great day and night with Keith yesterday. Will post some pics in a new thread. Lots of great music, great wine and finished with some nice JW Blue Label at the end of the night. Surprising, I'm feeling 'ok' this morning.. Thanks to @cheekyboy, @Nigel, @Hensa and @Headbanger for coming over The gear sounded pretty good all day. We are indeed lucky 1
Guest Hensa Posted July 22, 2017 Posted July 22, 2017 Thanks again scuzzii! An excellent afternoon of great company, music and wine, as always! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
cheekyboy Posted July 23, 2017 Author Posted July 23, 2017 Yep, thanks so much, John, for your hospitality as usual mate. The CH2s are sounding absolutely brilliant and I know I'm obviously biased, but it would be great to get more StereoNET members in front of them for a listen. The vinyl rig is also sounding sensational and that Benz cart is definitely a keeper. Looking forward to seeing the pics too, mate. Cheers, Keith 2
