cazzesman Posted June 17, 2017 Posted June 17, 2017 (edited) My afternoon was spent swapping cables in out between my Elektra Pre and SGR CX4F MkII Actives. Both have XLR and RCA out/in. Cables were on loan courtesy of Geoff from Aurealis Cables in Qld. Thanks, Geoff. Very generous man. I quickly settled on the XLR's over the RCA. 1 Copper version and 1 Silver version. As can tend to happen over time and various tunes the brain starts playing tricks. 1st one then the other sounding right. Enter the wife who claims to have no idea about what I was asking her to do i.e. just listen. I told her nothing and sat her in the sweet spot.................no the other sweet spot. She selected 3 fav tracks she knew well. I swapped the cables in and out after each track. Of course, old Bat ears nailed it. The copper was smoother and richer but not as detailed. The silver was clearer, cleaner and more detailed but a tad harsh at times. I left the Silver XLR's in but didn't tell her. I played the same 3 tracks after adjusting the Tweeter EQ 1.5 down on the rear of the SGR's. Her words. "I don't know what you did but now is sounds perfect. Clear and detailed but not harsh". Houston, we have a winner I think. Regards Cazzesman Can't live with 'em and apparently can't shoot 'em Edited June 17, 2017 by cazzesman 10
rockeater Posted June 17, 2017 Posted June 17, 2017 (edited) Sadly yes, my ex had too better hearing than myself. The best story was when I bought an Electrocompaniet pre-amp. She has seen me carting it in and said: "I seemed to have heard that we have no money and here you are carting another one of your toys!". I promptly replied that it was a bargain and I will probably sell it for profit to somewhat lessen our financial predicament. Later that afternoon she was cooking dinner and I swapped the Yamaha 600 series pre-amp for the Electrocompaniet EC-4 (which I still have). She walked over from the kitchen to the listening room and sought confirmation: "You just swapped the preamp for the new one, didn't you?" I confirmed and then she proclaimed: "We're keeping it". And walked off. Cheers Roman Edited June 17, 2017 by rockeater details 9

BATMAQN Posted June 17, 2017 Posted June 17, 2017 Of course women have better hearing than us how else do you think they know each time we bring new gear in through the door!!! (They can hear the fear). 5
Full Range Posted June 17, 2017 Posted June 17, 2017 All my wife asks for is "No not that thing " She asks me to turn the volume down That's why I wait for her to go shopping or work so I can listen in peace 2
audiofeline Posted June 22, 2017 Posted June 22, 2017 I recall some time after CDs came out when I finally got a quality CD player. Everyone would say that I was silly saying that records sounded better than CD. I would do an A-B blind test, cuing a record and CD of the same track. Every time they picked the record as having the better sound, but would still not admit that maybe CDs were not as good. They would not even accept my explanation that they had previously compared the reasonably good quality that came from CD players against the poor-quality turntables common to most. But a good turntable beats the CD. I know with advances in technology that the gap between analogue and digital has decreased. What I find interesting from this is that even though many of these people who say they can't detect/appreciate good quality sound held incorrect and firm opinions, their ears always were able to detect the truth.

I may have to throw some silver in again soon to test. Like you as I have changed components or cables, a quick adjustment on the crossover (active) would yield noticeable improvements. 1

Rumour has it that size has nothing to do with it, but by the look of your SGR's vs mine I might beg to differ. With your's, I hear that 130+db is never enough. Here's to Stuart. Regards Cazzesman 3

Dunno about 130dB, Would need to exhaust the Boeing 747 into the lounge me thinks. Golden ears were turned to copper that day.
