Geoff Millar Posted June 15, 2017 Posted June 15, 2017 (edited) Hello All Here is my second pair of DIY speakers, with home-made cabinets. Finish is acrylic paint applied with a roller and these look OK......... from a couple of metres away. Drivers are Peerless 830656 5" mid woofers, tweeters VIFA BC25TG15s. The crossover design was lifted from a European project which the builder kindly posted on DIYaudio (I think). Second order on woofer, third on tweeter.. Please let me know if you're interested in the details. Cabinets are 16mm MDF, ported in the back and the back panel is detachable for maintenance, hence the obvious seam in the finish. The Peerless don't need to be rebated, which made construction relatively easy. The VIFAs have a plastic faceplate so you have to be careful when mounting them, and you can't solder the terminals as it will melt the plastic. Drivers are from LSK, crossover components and invaluable advice (as always) from Speakerbug I'm very happy with the sound, especially for the damage: about $280 all up. HIghs are clear without being harsh, mids are smooth and detailed, and bass is acceptable as I use these with a sub. Jazz and classical music work really well. I haven't heard any commercial speakers which sound as good as these at the price point. Geoff Edited June 15, 2017 by Geoff Millar typo 7
Geoff Millar Posted June 16, 2017 Author Posted June 16, 2017 Thank you all for your kind works about my handiwork! These are my first 'DIY' speakers, however, I didn't make the cabinets: they were done, very nicely indeed, by a family friend, A pattern maker by trade, he used veneered and stained MDF. The speakers were designed by Curt Campbell: they're called "Slapshot" and use Dayton RS180P (7") woofers and a Morel CAT tweeter. The sound is marvellous, easily the best speakers I've heard under $5,000. Very natural sounding, efficient and produce a big enough sound to fill our large living room. Curt's a genius and other designs include the famous "Tritrix", Approx dimensions are 30" h, 9" w and 11" deep. Since I did them the $A has gone down the S-bend but they would still be great value for the sound. Will never buy commercial speakers again! Geoff 3 1

niss_man Posted June 17, 2017 Posted June 17, 2017 Yeah. All my speakers are diy designed and built as well. Comparing 'brand new speakers' to diy I totally agree with you, although when it comes to second hand speakers, you can get some fantastic bargains and sound for a price equal to or better than some brand new diy speakers. Diy is great when you want to learn something as well as have a great custom build at the end of the build. Simon
