Maxtt Posted June 10, 2017 Posted June 10, 2017 (edited) Hi all, after some advice on used speakers. I am looking to upgrade my bookshelf and sub speakers to floor standing in the next month. Was going to buy some new Sonus Faber Principia 5's for $1500, but I realise I could perhaps do a lot better second hand. Room - 5.5m x 5m on carpet Amp - early 80's Pioneer A7 (70w) Mostly vinyl on Rega P3, or Flac through dragonfly. Listen to all genres, but mostly rock/pop/jazz. I do like bottom end, so decent bass is a must What would you suggest I keep an eye out for in the $1-1.5k range? Cheers Edited June 10, 2017 by Maxtt
Guest Posted June 11, 2017 Posted June 11, 2017 At the risk of the most heinous of human faults- shameless self promotion, these may very well form the basis of some great sound for you. Far more punchy than their looks suggest!! 1
WhakPak Posted June 11, 2017 Posted June 11, 2017 With used you are stuck with what the used market has to offer. So asking for suggestions might not reveal anything you can go out and buy. As @Grizzly has done, owners who have speakers to sell in this space will either reach out to you directly, or you will find them in the SNA classifieds, and other places. When you have a list of options, come back to the forum and ask for opinion on those particular speaker choices.
Maxtt Posted June 11, 2017 Author Posted June 11, 2017 (edited) I hear you, bu I am a bit overwhelmed with the number of speakers out there so was just wishing to pehaps have a shortlist of ones too look out for should they become available. Edited June 11, 2017 by Maxtt
Al.M Posted June 12, 2017 Posted June 12, 2017 (edited) With a used budget of $1-1.5k you could easily get some very good ones that rrp for up to $5k within a 10yr item age, under 5yr age less, more than 10yr better again ratio. The Sonus Faber Principia 5 are floorstanders so assume you are looking for that style, but what are you open to standmount design, different concepts (ribbon and electrostic etc) and others and what age of speaker are you comfortable with? Also, if you were thinking of $1.5k new there will also be used $0.5-1k speakers or less worth considering that should sound as good. Some current used options: https://www.gumtree.com.au/s-ad/adelaide-cbd/speakers/duntech-statesman-speakers/1131616046 Unless worried about age 15yrs I would go for these or the Ambience ribbons https://www.gumtree.com.au/s-ad/adelaide-cbd/speakers/duntech-statesman-speakers/1131616046 Duntechs and another in Gumtree https://www.gumtree.com.au/s-ad/rankin-park/speakers/ambience-speakers/1150765531 Ambience hybrid ribbons maybe up to 10 yrs old for $1800 will give excellent voice, imaging and deep bass, possibly like nothing you may have heard. https://www.gumtree.com.au/s-ad/melville/speakers/focal-836w-floorstanding-speakers-w-matching-subwoofer/1150732468 More than your budget and in WA but keep an eye out for these around $1700 you get a large full range three way driver design. https://www.gumtree.com.au/s-ad/berala/speakers/jml-speakers-and-subwoofer/1150728874 Probably older than 10yrs but worth considering Proper fullrange 3 way Focals at $2.2k perhaps try to bargain. https://www.gumtree.com.au/s-ad/reservoir/other-audio/b-w-dm605-s2-floor-standing-speakers-vgc/1150718736 B&W 605 for $900 https://www.gumtree.com.au/s-ad/bowen-hills/speakers/dynaudio-contour-1-8-mkii-floorstanding-hifi-speakers-rosewood/1150499106 Good reviews and older maybe 15yrs Quite a few others to consider like Krix Esoterix, various Proacs, PMC standmounts, various Dynaudio, Lenahans, various B&W, various KEF, Jamo Concert 11 etc Edited June 12, 2017 by Al.M
bzr Posted June 12, 2017 Posted June 12, 2017 If I was you, I'd go & listen to everything I could everywhere. When you realise that it is very easy to waste your money on speakers at 10x the price of what you ask, you will probably have a very good idea of what you like. Go and audition regardless of price!! 1
