MusicHaven Posted June 8, 2017 Posted June 8, 2017 Hi Folks, Need bit of advice on these two bookshelf speakers from the forum members. I guess a similar topic might have been discussed in other threads however need some specific advice and recommendations based on theses two models. As I am based in Syd cant demo the ATC's unless I plan a trip to Mel. thanks Music Preference Listen to mostly Jazz, classic, instruments. Basic requirements Need tight bass, wide soundstage and clear vocals. Current AMP Anthem MCA 225 Room dimensions. Room size 3.4 x 4.5. One side speaker placement would be close to wall.
allthumbs Posted June 9, 2017 Posted June 9, 2017 I notice that the ATC's are a fairly large bookshelf (?) just as an aside can I ask if anybody running bookshelf speakers on low stands? I currently have my AR Connoisseur 2 way sealed speakers that measure 40H x 26W x17D (cm), on stands with solid metals spikes on thick wooden chopping boards (I got that idea from another poster here and what a great idea it is). So the bottom of the speaker cabinets are 33cm from the floor. This goes very much against the conventional wisdom of having bookshelf speakers recommended being put on stands high enough so that the tweeters are at ear level. But at the height I am currently running them everything has improved, solidity, imaging and bass, not dramatically so that they sound like a different speaker, but very markedly. It hasn’t taken away from the scale or height of the musical image either. I am interested to see if anyone has the same experience? Given that the AR’s are relatively speaking a larger bookshelf, I am tempted to run smaller bookshelf speakers at the same height to see how they may sound.
allthumbs Posted June 9, 2017 Posted June 9, 2017 Apologies to the moderators, not sure what happened here, I was in the original thread and this happened.
GhostCoast Posted June 19, 2017 Posted June 19, 2017 when you listen to your speakers, you are approx 3-4 meters away from them.. perfectly ear level or not doesn't make any noticeable difference.. ignore those who claim to have supersonic bat ears and able to triangulate the position of each driver blindfolded.. "no one can" i'd be more concerned of the condition your AR speakers are in, cabinet integrity, driver suspension , capacitors etc etc.. height of your speaker stands, results of it etc varies by a million factors.. room shape, size, wall material, furniture in the room, positioning of that furniture yada yada yada ... all of these might influence things to a degree and a combination of multiple aspects might make a notable difference move stuff around in sensible combinations and decide what you like best in "your" room for "your" ears..
