Janjuggler Posted June 6, 2017 Posted June 6, 2017 Hi All Having the house made over so looking to upgrade my current HT system. I am currently looking at either going the way of something like an Integra DRT 30.7 or DRT 80.1, and using the pre outs to go to an Emotiva power amp for the front speakers, or look at an Integra DHC 80.3 + Emotiva for front speakers and a Rotel 5 channel or some other Power amp with 5 channels @ ~ 100w/c Any thoughts from anyone with pros and cons of each. Current speakers, fronts Elac FS68, Centre Elac AC 61, Rears AC 61 Bookshelf and Niles ?? currently in roof. Cheers JJ 2
WhakPak Posted June 6, 2017 Posted June 6, 2017 Do you really need surround sound? Why I say that is I find that 99% of the time only my front 2 speakers and attached bits and pieces are used. The surround sound hardware, of which many $$ was invested in, might have been better spent elsewhere. 3

When you watch movies, about 60-70% of the sound comes from the centre speaker.Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk
Happy Posted June 6, 2017 Posted June 6, 2017 But to hell with surrounds Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk

Bunno77 Posted June 6, 2017 Posted June 6, 2017 If you must have surround I would get any AVR that you like the look of (Cambridge Audio and Rotel do a good job for music too and aren't too expensive but features can be lacking) and then add either and integrated amp or pre/power with HT bypass function. I don't miss the surround for movies or tv, it is great in 2 channel 1

powerav Posted June 6, 2017 Posted June 6, 2017 (edited) I have experience in all the receivers and pre/pros mentioned. This is what I have had in the past 3 years but have had AVR's for over 20 years. 1. Integra 30.5 plus Rotel RMB 1552, really liked this and my the power amp for front channels was a big improvement. 2. Cambridge Audio 651R on it's own. Yes it was a small improvement for 2 channel music but the lack of features made it unusable as a modern AVR. 3. Denon x3200 with 3 channel power amp - first taste of dolby atmos and thought was great, made just 2 channel tv more exciting, 2 channel music was not great. 4. Integra DHC 80.3 plus 5 channel amp - Good all rounder, does everything great, lacking the dolby atmos and DTS x of course and this is what I wanted for new home so is the reason I sold. 5. Integra 30.7 plus integrated amp for 2 channel music and for power amp - I must say I do not miss the pre/pro at all as I thought I would as this 30.7 is a little ripper, easier to set up and is easily on par with the pre/pro combo for HT and slightly better for 2 channel music with just using AVR plus integrated as poweramp. I wouldn't go back to a pre/pro combo. On 6/6/2017 at 10:56 PM, WhakPak said: Do you really need surround sound? YES, I use surround sound for music more than movies, DVD audio, SACD, Bluray Audio. Hard to go back to 2 channel was you have heard these. Edited June 8, 2017 by powerav

Janjuggler Posted June 9, 2017 Author Posted June 9, 2017 Hi All Well bit the bullet and after much deliberation decided to get an Integra DTR-50.7, put in an offer and with the 20% off was a little over $900. It will replace an ageing Denon AVR 3807, so resale value is not an option. It is expected to arrive early next week so should hook it up then.... JJ 3
