Hey guys,

Just looking for some thoughts on whether a subwoofer should be included in a 2 channel setup.

My current bookshelf speakers do pretty good bass, but just wondering if adding a subwoofer is going to bring anything new.....added oomph or depth ?

Purely just for music, not movies at this point in time.

Thanks

Yes definitely add a sub, it will add a whole new dimension to your music, and improve the listening experience considerably, my recent experience of adding subs.

Some thinks you don't understand the soul of music if you had a sub or two. Deep I know.

Thanks for the replies, if not a bit cryptic :)

Can you recomend a sub to go with, budgets a bit tight soooooo round the $300 mark thereabouts ?

Mmmm, can you take a moment or two to read what you wrote (which I, for one, absolutely don't understand!) and re-write it so we all can understand it. ;)

"Some thinks" ... do you really mean "some people think"?

And "you don't understand the soul of music if you had a sub or two" ... do you mean "you don't understand the soul of music unless you have a sub or two"?

Thanks,

Andy

"Bookshelf speakers" don't do bass (they are too small!).  So, yes, they need a sub - or preferably 2! - to give you "bass".  How low you want your bass to go decides how big - and expensive - the sub needs to be.

IME, a sub doesn't really add "oomph" ... what it/they does/do is add a solid foundation to the music you are hearing.  I have only recently added a pair of subs to my music system.  Now I didn't have "bookshelf" speakers - my mains delivered to at least 35hz - but the addition of subs means I can now hear another octave down.

And the result is amazing!  :thumb:

You might be struggling, at $300.  Sorry.  :(

Trying to talk down someone for minor grammatical or typographical errors on internet is such a low thing Andy. I know you're a dinosaur but still that's just so not fashionable :P

Well I happen to have a sub....once had up to 4. So I'm not the one to diss them subs but some do. In fact the majority in this game.

All 2-way bookshelves do pretty good bass - a deliberately pumped 100Hz that rolls off very quickly and overly loaded and noisy ports. Add a sub, plug the ports and enjoy a completely different music experience.

Sorry, H - it's just that I didn't understand WTF you were trying to say. :(  (It wasn't grammatical or typographic ... I was questioning your meaning!  And surely, when we speak or write ... the aim is to have clear meaning.)

Not necessarily. Sometimes we wanna insinuate, get cryptic or a little vague. Intentionally. After all I'm here to chill and joke around rather than get picky about little stuff

There was sarcasm in those words ....:sarc::party

Sure - trouble is, some owners of 2-way, ported bookshelf/standmount speakers actually do believe they get "good bass" (and don't need a sub or two).  My view is that they need to be eddycated - not agreed with.  :D

You obviously haven't picked up that I'm on the Aspergers spectrum, H.  :P

But yes, please tell me when I post something ... if you think I am 'joking around'.  :D

It's coming back to me as a result of our 'chat', H - didn't:

a. you used to have another moniker, and

b. I bought some very nice English bookshelf spkrs from you which I have in my bedroom (on Pivotelli stands, up near the ceiling) - which I sent you a pic of?

This dinosaur's memory is fading.  ;)

Ok back to the OP.....

what would the best active subs be at a $500-750 price point second hand? Again for 2 channel only - not films.

Also how do they wire up from a standard hifi amplifier?

Pre out.

If none, you can still draw the signal fro speaker binding posts mostly.

No pre out....

so speaker cable into sub then then out again to another speaker?

Typically you draw the signal from speaker cables to the sub directly. Some have their in built speaker binding posts. If none, you can still try the Hi-Low converter in car audio.

RELs have speakon connection for stereo amps which is recommended.

Thanks. But if you only, have a single pair of speaker binding posts which are used for the main speakers I still don't understand where the signal,to the sub comes from

You share the posts with the cables for connection to the sub. The load is marginal so normally you don't need to worry about it except for certain valve amps.
