Steever Posted May 8, 2017 Posted May 8, 2017 I'm on the hunt for a pair of good to high quality midrange drivers. They will be mounted to the rear of the front facing baffle which has a hole with a diameter of 60mm across The driver's total diameter should be no more than 80mm and have an impedance of 8 Ohms. Any idea on where I should start my looking, apart from Madisound, Parts-Express, Speakerbits, and Speakerbug? Budget is up to $100 each driver. Many thanks.
fury Posted May 8, 2017 Posted May 8, 2017 Faital have some smaller drivers available, although it looks like the cone drivers only go down to 3". I've used these before and have some excess available... http://www.faitalpro.com/en/products/archived_products/product_details/LF/index.php?id=401000090 Peerless and Vifa have a range of smaller drivers as well You can find some midranges locally through SpeakerBits. http://www.speakerbits.com/index.php?option=com_virtuemart&Itemid=146&category_id=1210&page=shop.browse&limit=20&limitstart=20
Steever Posted May 9, 2017 Author Posted May 9, 2017 Thanks guys. Due to many factors after lots of reading, I am just going to source some original replacement drivers as I don't want to change the baffle and crossover design. The speakers are a pair of NHT Classic Series Model Fours. As you can see, the poor midbass drivers also need some work. I have ordered new rubber surrounds and Sikaflex for that.

The surrounds are actually rubber. I think it was a case of direct sunlight getting to these daily at the previous owner's house. The 10" woofers in the side of each enclosure are perfectly fine as they appear to have remained covered.

Steever Posted May 10, 2017 Author Posted May 10, 2017 Ultra Violent light. Yep. All up, it'll cost me just under $400 to fix these. They're a $3500 pair of speakers and I got them for free from a roadside rubbish collection so, can't complain really. 3
Steever Posted May 11, 2017 Author Posted May 11, 2017 Yes, indeedy! Tonight was drivers out, cross over out, desolder and bin factory cables with nasty push clips and molex plugs, prep new AudioQuest Cinequest 4 cable, and all connections soldered. Tomorrow night, repeat for the other speaker. Weekend, buff some scuffs out of the finish. I also found a place where I can get original factory mid/tweet pods at less than half the price the AU importer charges. My midbass surrounds are on their way and I am about to order 8 new brass binding posts and spikes. 1
Steever Posted May 12, 2017 Author Posted May 12, 2017 Ok, all that AQ cable I soldered into one of the cabinets last night was pulled out tonight. Why?I found my stash of Kimber 4TC. So, both enclosures got a Kimber rewire tonight. Every time I prep Kimber for a use, whether it's amp to speaker runs or, internal speaker wiring such as here, I swear I'll never do it again. It just sounds so good for the money though. It's my second favorite brand of cable (Nordost is tops for me). Tonight, I prepped 10 runs and at 16 wire strips each, I'd stripped 160 bits of insulation ends off wires. This stuff is also quite stiff so it's tough on fingers. All done now...Never again.
Steever Posted May 15, 2017 Author Posted May 15, 2017 Two new NHT mid/tweeter modules are now on order. They are for one of NHT's centre speakers but I can quite simply change the cross overs over (with a Kimber rewire for them too) and refit them for my Classic Fours. The modules use the same tweeter and mid diaphragms, and face-plate across all models. I also have some very nice fine black wool felt for the module faces as well.
Sub Sonic Posted July 9, 2017 Posted July 9, 2017 @Winno Just curious, how did this project go in the end? Regards, SS

See my post above yours. I also ebayed some rubber surrounds and used Sikaflex to bond them to the frame and cone. The end result is a very nice pair of speakers. 2
Sub Sonic Posted July 9, 2017 Posted July 9, 2017 Nice score and nice work in bringing them back to life! Regards, SE 1
