I thought I would just put the question out there, keen to hear some suggestions to broaden my horizons

Room is porcelain tiled floors, gyprock direct stuck over brick, lots of glass down one side and is 16.5 meters x approx 8 meters with 2.64m ceiling and a dropped bulkhead above kitchen of 2.4m, living, dining and kitchen combined.

Previous speakers for this room were B&W 805D2's, now sold, however felt time for a change and would like a speaker better suited to filling a large room.

Just after a nice tonal balance, not after pin point imaging is it just for a living room system for watching tv, listening to music while cooking etc.

Current thinking is a s/hand pair of CM9's

I have my dedicated 8mx6m listening room for the serious stuff which currently has B&W 803D2 as mains.

I am open to any brands, must look decent tho as its a shared room.

I have never heard any dynaudio's before.......

They're a bargain under 2k.
One of my favourite speaker brands, as Marcus said try to have a listen.

I've got a pair of Definitive Technology BP10 available that will fit your space and budget.

p.s. you don't see gyprock direct stuck over brick very often.

Is there a subwoofer in that room also and are you concerned with shape of speakers like thin floorstander vs wider cabinets?

Dynaudio and CM9 would be good.

Others to consider are Focal 827V, Vienna floorstanders, Proac, Krix Neuphonix, Ambience 1800 Ribbon hybrids (some one in Perth), Monitor Audio, Duntechs and VAF I66.

Thanks, on my list of possibilities.

The gyprock direct to brick is getting more and more popular

The B&W tweeters are very bright, as is your room.  It may not be a marriage made in heaven.

That has been mentioned before, however I never found the Diamond tweeters too bright at all. It does concern me a tad having the older style aluminium tweeter as found in the CM range for this room tho.

I have previously had 2 pairs of CM10's in another house however they had the newer version of the tweeter.

I have previously found the focal's to be brighter, especially the new sopras.

No plans for a subwoofer, the idea is to keep things simple. Hence why the 805D have departed. They sounded glorious however I'm just after some more bottom end while remaining in second system budget territory.

The budget of $1500 is to make this more of a challenge, to see what could be achievable. It would be too easy otherwise.

If theres Ambience 1800s for $1500. Get them. And be Happy.

:)

Big Amp though, think Krell/Pass Labs/Mark Levinson. You'll love it.

I've sold my Magico S3 speakers, they are going to a new home in South Korea. This means I'll be using the BP10 as a temporary replacement until my new Magico speakers arrive. You can come and listen to the BP10. I am near Fiona Stanley hospital.

Congrats on the new Magico's.

I will get in touch if/when these make the shortlist, what days/times are you available?

I work shift work so it takes some juggling to fit things in.

Thanks

lol

this room is so complex/impossible the challenge is mission impossible with a $10 K budget

Haha, now that's not the spirit!

It is never going to be an audiophile listening space, I have another room for that.

However I'm still sure I can find something perfectly reasonable within the parameters. :)

There are some Monitor Audio silver 8's on gumtree right on budget, and in Perth.

I have always thought monitor audio were considered bright, and would therefore not be suitable for this room.

Thoughts?

They are more neutral than bright, but with that said, and like may good speakers, one should take care with system matching. They are revealing of poor quality and under powered amplification and won't hide any upstream deficiencies in a system.

IMO, they are one of the best kept secrets in audio and if you can get a pair in good condition for your budget or under, I wouldn't hesitate

You may be able to find some pmc ob1s but they would be in very average condition at your price. You would be looking at around $2k well worth the extra spend IMO.

Maybe if the Monitor Audio Silver 8 is over budget, maybe look out for an used pair of RS 8 that preceded them. Surely they have to cost less than $1500 used.
