Some post footy late night critical listening last night.

Started with Rush "Moving Pictures" 2015 remastered reissue, US pressing (Quality Records Pressings).....superb, as Rush always is......pretty good pressing as well.

Rush – Moving Pictures (2015, 200gm, Vinyl) - Discogs

Next up was the under played (by me) 'Sky' debut album, Oz 1st pressing. This is an excellent album....proggy classical based rock superbly performed by some of the best classical musicians of the day. This pressing is impressive too.

After pampering the wife all morning its time for some for some self indulgence in the form of some 80's pop/soul by the underrated Philip Bailey

Philip Bailey - Chinese Wall (which contains one of my fav duets via the cut Easy Lover with Phil Collins)

It’s Mother’s Day

And today my wife has picked the albums to play

She chose some familiar 70s popular albums and I also thought to surprise her with some accordion music, and although we did not get through them all she was happy to have a listen

Q-Tips - self titled

Paul Young lead singing here a few years before "No Parlez".  Lots of 60's soul covers as you would expect.  I never really understood the UK "Northern Soul", Wigan Casino thing but it seems like this album might be some kind of offshoot of that.  Not that other contemporary acts didn't shamelessly mine the Motown/Stax back catalog in spirit if not simply doing covers themselves.

Not sure if it's worth going out of your way to track this down (just buy the sublime originals!) but it's an interesting album if you see it cheap and you like the raspy vocal stylings of Paul Young.

Gilbert O'Sullivan - Himself

Picked this up out at a charity shop in Orange - it has the original pricetag from the "Orange Sound Centre" on the back at the princely sum of $5.95.  Can't say I'm a huge fan of the McCartney-esque singing style and the shared love of music hall shenanigans but it's pleasant enough.  "Permissive Twit" is fun.

No comment... on the grounds that I may incriminate myself

But my wife was actually a very good piano accordion player ( now retired)

Well that answers all the questions I had but was afraid to ask about listening to hours of accordion music 🤪

My favourite Aussie band. Been chasing this LP for awhile now.

Out in colour, special edition (1600 copies only) double LP.

2nd listen now.

Sound is good, but not exceptional. There is a bit of noise in between tracks. Gave it a good clean with Melody Mate which seemed to have improved it.

Really do need a record cleaner.

Would have sent it back 12 months ago. Must be mellowing in my golden years. Or maybe I've just become more accepting.

Did read somewhere that the sq of the first release was very poor, especially on side 3. That was the first side l played. Just to sure not same old. Nope sounded good.Lol.

Yes. Upon second listen, the sound has got better. I guess my $800 stylus has done its job of cleaning out the groove of any residual debris from the initial pressing...ouch.

Carly Simon - Boys In The Trees

Opens with the slinky "You belong to me" - not sure how I ended up with so many Carly Simon records but I am not complaining.

Heard about the glue trick. But never been game enough to try it😱

What about if you coat it with honey, and then stick it over an ants nest. That would be equally effective...wouldnt it!

@Old Man Rubber the pic of Q.TIPS reminds so much of this one.  This is one of the great MoFi pressings.  Great presentation.  Funny I would not bought this album had somebody else not played it on their reference system - I was so impressed I got a myself a copy.

Carly Simon - Playing Possum

Not terribly well regarded according to the online reviews.  She definitely made better records but it isn't terrible, high production values and all the sexual frankness you expect out of the lyrics but it does come off a bit like somebody who ran out of ideas and substituted a lot of studio fussiness and a bit of shock value was forced to start acting like an adult "Sons of Summer" is a great song, this is the first time I've listened to this properly and on a superficial listen it doesn't sound like much.  Simon seems caught between the boring world of adulting, physical desires and needs and the realisation that the arrow of time points forward and we have no route back to the past once certain choices have been made.  Screw the reviewers and I'm kicking myself for dismissing this on the first listen.  It's great.

.  edit:  actually the mastering of this is really good, Simon tends to hit a lot of the "S" sounds pretty hard but this has none of the sibilent distortion you expect.  Plenty of distinct bass too and it helps that while the production is fussy, there is plenty of air in even the densest tracks.  A great sounding bit of vinyl.

The QuadraDisc stuff is fun to have (although I don't have the equipment to hear it unless I ripped it to the laptop and processed it I guess).  Sounds fine on a stereo system anyway, and doesn't seem to have a lot of the odd phasing effects you get on (say) the Quadraphonic "Dark side of the moon".

Jack Nitzche - The Razors Edge

Nitzche let's the lachrymose strings loose on a melancholy soundtrack to a melancholy story.

Rare serious acting gig for Bill Murray - I had never seen the film but bought the album a few years ago because it has a painting of Bill Murray on it.  After hearing it, I had to see the movie and why not buy the Laserdisc.  Sadly it's Pan & Scan as most of them were in the 1980s, the film itself never quite makes it to "good" but it has it's moments.

P Isolator (LPI) - The LPI slips over the spindle of your turntable and rests on the label portion of the LP.
The LPI absorbs the micro vibrations that are present at the label area, and makes the reproduction clearer, cleaner, more delicate, more open, and lifelike. The LPI Short Spindle is compatible with many turntables. The LPI Long Spindle works with turntables that incorporate a longer than average spindle.
The LPI immediately imposes a sense of balanced calm on proceedings: the band step away from the speakers, the recording becomes a single, coherent entity, while the stereo perspective becomes much more natural, especially in terms of height. The drum kit solidifies into a single compact unit, rather than having elements scattered across the soundstage, the chiming guitars are both better separated and more insistent. But most telling of all is the drop in apparent volume; the music doesn’t seem so loud because so much hash and noise has been stripped away...I’ve found no music that fails to benefit from the LPI and it has become an essential piece of the turntable setup.

Legendary vinyl playback at an affordable price. I purchased this HiFi icon second hand 10 years ago. Within a year I sourced its most highly recommended components from the era of manufacture.

      * Linn LP12 serial number 029326 manufactured between 1979 and 1981.
      * Ittok LVII tonearm with Linn Karma LOMC cartridge (replaced 5 years ago by Decibel HiFi).
      * Linn Cirkus sub-chasis and bearing (original chassis also supplied with the sale).
      * Linn Lingo Mk 1 external power supply (original internal power board and cable also supplied with the sale).
      * Linn Linto MC Phono Stage.

Serviced and balanced 5 years ago by Decibel HiFi.

The photos show its excellent condition. There is one blemish in the plinth just to the right hand side of the tonearm which you can see in one photo. Apart from that it is close to as-new condition.
Due to the number of components, plus the fact I have no packaging for the Linto MC Phono Stage, Brisbane pickup only.

Item Condition: LPs VG+ / Cover VG Shipping Options: Shipping is included in price. Suburb or Town: Adelaide State: SA Payment Method: PayPal Reason for selling: Excess Further information:
This is the very rare, limited edition, double vinyl, original issue. It was pressed in Holland, mastered direct to lacquer from the original analogue tapes by Doug Sax at TML.

Mixed by James Guthrie, there are recognisable differences to the 2015 reissue.

Rating of LPs is VG+. They are shiny and visually in great shape with no obvious marks. They play very nicely but with a few ticks audible in quiet parts. This doesn't overpower, so are not heard in louder sections. The music sounds awesome. Special effects in Q sound work a treat.

The outer sleeve is VG. A little wear at edges, small bend on one corner. The inners and booklet are in good shape except for bend in one corner and a few fingermarks on the glossy black surfaces. Still have the hype sticker but loose. No shrink wrap.

This is the genuine article, purchased by me on release in 1992.
