Addicted to music Posted January 30, 2017 Posted January 30, 2017 (edited) I'm eying dash cameras for both front and rear. Heaps on the market but unknown what to get. ive had the Mondeo diesel get hit in a carpark and just lucky that one instance a couple of maintenance guys ran into the office to informed me of the incident in which this driver was about to take off. My best man parked his Hyundai Van in a shopping centre and it was knocked into the middle of the road! This driver took off and couldn't be located! company vehicle policies have changed so if we can't provide a rego or details of the other driver at fault, we have to bear the access. Guest thathifiguy Posted January 30, 2017 Posted January 30, 2017 I'm thinking about some myself, more due to the erratic and flagrant driving behavior on Melbourne roads lately. If I see someone driving around like an idiot, you can sure as hell bet I'll be submitting any footage I have to the police.
koputai Posted April 6, 2017 Posted April 6, 2017 Thinking of getting one too, after a looney woman episode last night on the way home. Kapture KPT-900 is high on my list. Any thoughts? Cheers, Jason.

I'd like to see them try that on with me. I'd tell them they can shove that where the sun don't shine. What do they want you to be a a repair man or a car security guard. I suspect they would be on shaky ground legally. 1
~Spyne~ Posted April 6, 2017 Posted April 6, 2017 (edited) How much are you looking to spend? Parking mode (starts recording when the car is parked/off, if motion is sensed)? Daytime, nighttime or both driving? Front or front + rear camera? BlackVue DR650S-2CH is a good front+rear option that is easily available locally. Street Guardian SG9665GC is a good front-only cam that is easily available locally (local company, actually). DOD LS460W, Viofo A119S and Vicovation Opia2 are three others (front-only) that get great reviews and arguably have better image quality that the two above. Might be harder to source though. Oh, the Lukas LK7950 is another front+rear cam, though again, might be harder to source locally compared to the BlackVue. Edited April 6, 2017 by ~Spyne~ 1
ThirdDrawerDown Posted April 7, 2017 Posted April 7, 2017 Good thread. Any advice too on who in Melbourne does a good install?
joz Posted April 7, 2017 Posted April 7, 2017 I'm also in the market for one atm , with the amount of driving I'm doing and the amount of times I find myself avoiding DHs on the road is getting beyond a joke.

If I see someone driving around like an idiot, you can sure as hell bet I'll be submitting any footage I have to the police. I had a chat to plod a while ago about supplying evidence. His opinion was that it could be problematic because a defence lawyer could do a 'discovery motion' to find out who supplied the evidence which could be interesting if he's defending Mr Big and Naughty, and Mr Powerful sends his mates Mr Tough and Mr Scary over for a chat. Bit of a bugger that. There's some good stuff on dashcams on Whirlpool forums. 2
koputai Posted April 7, 2017 Posted April 7, 2017 I'd think it was pretty bloody obvious who supplied the evidence in a case if it was from a dash camera. So are you saying that one shouldn't try to prove their innocence because someone big and scary might come along? Cheers, Jason.
lencolad Posted April 7, 2017 Posted April 7, 2017 No. I see copious amounts of idiocy (that doesn't directly affect me) weekly and it would be great to supply all that to plod, but there's a slight chance that some of that evidence might pertain to bad boys and / or their wives / girlfriends / mates. Were I to be directly affected I'd be letting the cards fall where they may. In general I'm a rather-die-on-my-feet-than-live-on-my-knees type but there is a case for caution sometimes. How about turning bad driving into an earning opportunity ? If everyone was cammed-up and the evidence admissable perhaps Big Brother could give the supplier of the evidence a share of the resulting fine. Nice little police-informer state there ..... But it would reduce the daily dose of stupidity.
Darren69 Posted April 8, 2017 Posted April 8, 2017 I seem to recall that one cannot simply be an anonymous dobber, I think if things go to court, the complainant needs to be there as well, unless there is some way around this through the police pressing charges. However, by the sound of this thread there won't be enough coppers to go around.
koputai Posted April 9, 2017 Posted April 9, 2017 What prompted me to get one, was when a woman cut me off, across an undivided line, totally illegal. I gave her about a 4 to 5 second honk on the horn. A few seconds after this, she jumped on the brakes, I suppose to teach me a lesson. I then carried on on my normal course home, at a reasonable distance behind, but she was going the same way, so must have thought I was following her. She started making all sorts of gestures to me in the rear vision mirror, totally fruity. When I took my normal turn-off, which she happened to be doing too, she freaked. Looking around, texting, presumably sending my rego number. She shortly after pulled over, and I carried on home. Now she probably went home, told hubby about the road rager that harassed her, and that she got my number. If I had a cam, I would have caught it all, and been able to prove my innocence if hubby or plod came calling. Cheers, Jason.
bob_m_54 Posted April 10, 2017 Posted April 10, 2017 Also be aware that the evidence on your dashcam may be detrimental to your own case, if it shows you doing something a bit silly. But I do have one, and apart from thousands of kilometers of red dirt outback touring, and the occasional doofus that cuts you off, the only thing of real interest I have captured was a car chase about 10Km south of Tamworth, that I happen to tag on the end of. I was driving a Toyota Troopy, with a small caravan on the back, and saw a bunch of flashing red and blue lights in my rear vision mirror, reminiscent of a Smokey and the Bandit movie. When they eventually got closer, I could see there were about 6 police vehicles pursuing a small sedan traveling quite slowly, due to having no tyres on his front wheels. I pulled over and let them all pass, then quickly returned to the bitumen so as not to lose my place in the samba line. It was all very exciting, and I was getting into the spirit of things, when my wife reminded me I was doing 90KPH in an 80 zone, so I had to back off a bit. A little way up the road, after swerving into the path of oncoming traffic a couple of times, the fugitive had slowed down and I was able to catch up again. Then he swerved off the side of the road, the police cars surrounded him, and a bunch of them jumped out with guns drawn (I was having second thoughts about being so close to the action). One of the officers smashed in the drivers window with his gun, and they hauled out the driver and pinned him to the ground and handcuffed him. During this, myself and half a dozen other vehicles had formed a bit of a stationary cue. Someone behind me, who was getting a bit impatient, tooted his horn, then preceded to drive around the melee. I thought that was a bit risky, given the situation, with about eight hyped up coppers with guns drawn. What I didn't think about till a couple of days later, when showing the video to some friends, was that I should have gone to the local Tamworth TV station and asked if they wanted footage of the incident. Could have made a couple of bob on it LOL. 2
Darren69 Posted April 10, 2017 Posted April 10, 2017 I have noticed that most of the road-rage shows on the telly show the actual rage-ers actions through their own dash cam, haha!
mello yello Posted May 11, 2017 Posted May 11, 2017 thats one way to get that parking spot across the street perfect 15!!!!
koputai Posted May 11, 2017 Posted May 11, 2017 (edited) Just an update. I've had my Kapture KPT-900 for a month now, and it's not performed well. Almost every time I get in the car, the camera boots up, but comes up with 'Card Error'. It seems like it's trying to access the card before there's a stable power voltage. The card I bought for it is a good quality Lexar card. I googled this issue a couple of weeks ago and found a number of others having the same problem, but now I can't find them any more. I have to manually turn it off and back on, usually five or six times, sometimes more, before the error goes away. The footage itself is great, but the unit can't be relied on to actually work. Cheers, Jason. Edited May 11, 2017 by koputai

mello yello Posted May 11, 2017 Posted May 11, 2017 Russian learning English, the flags appear to be in Israel interesting that the red light changes to red/orange and they all take off "how many monnee" LoL 1
koputai Posted May 16, 2017 Posted May 16, 2017 The Kapture KPT-900 is going back to JB HiFi today as it almost never works. I've tried several different MicroSD cards. I've given Kapture the opportunity to help me, but their support is non-existant, no response at all. Highly unrecommended ! Cheers, Jason.
kukynas Posted September 3, 2018 Posted September 3, 2018 small refresh, I'm thinking about YI smart dashcam or Viofo A119 V2, any experience from local users?
GregWormald Posted September 4, 2018 Posted September 4, 2018 I have a Blackvue 650 that works well and can't be seen from the driver's seat. It also has a smartphone app for viewing and computer set-up. I got it professionally installed with the optional 'parking mode'.
agelessgoodguy Posted September 4, 2018 Posted September 4, 2018 A little while ago JB hada fairly popular model on discount clearance for $100 even, front view and bump modes, with gesture pic mode too to catch an event outside.
