catman
G'day all, for the last few days I've been putting my Ortofon Super OM10 into use and I'm ready to put my Shure M97xE back into operation. It's a bit strange that although I like the Ortofon Super OM10, it's not a cartridge that I can 'live with'. To articulate why, is actually difficult but I find the Super OM10 a little 'light sounding' and I find the Shure M97xE a 'beefier' sounding cartridge with better and more satisfying bass 'weight' and a generally smoother sound. I guess others might take a contrary view. What are others preferred cartridge 'house' sound? Regards, Felix. Guest Muon
I'm a bit odd maybe, Felix. But I aim for a system sound rather than a house sound of any one particular part of the whole. I'm probable and oddball in this hobby.
catman
G'day mate, yeah fair enough, but in all probability nobody is more oddball than me (for a lot of things). Regards, Felix.
caddisgeek
Maybe if you moved up the Ortofon chain you might find the sound more pleasing. I run a 2m Bronze it is leaps and bounds ahead of a Shure cart I have Edited April 1, 2016 by caddisgeek
catman
G'day mate, but the 2M Red ruined that whole series for me! Regards, Felix.
Guest Muon
Felix, the 2M Red is not the 2M series, it is just the entry level representative of the series. I'm with the C'geek in that I run a 2M Bronze also, and am not inclined to change any time soon. Although! no matter what the cart, it is one part of the system, and no one series or one cart will suit every system or every listeners tastes. Edit: and maybe let me be the oddball this time Edited April 1, 2016 by Muon

catman
G'day mate, yes I know that the Bronze is extremely well regarded and the Red is the bottom rung model but I was so horribly disappointed in the Red's overall performance, that I cannot bring myself to try any other model in that series! That's my problem, I guess. Regards, Felix.
Guest Muon
Well, need to stay in the context of budget and tables, so I'm just wondering if you have ever tried a NAGAOKA cart?
Happy
IME, the house sound of a certain brand shows from at least its midline offerings. Lower or entry stuff aims at accommodating, well, those who need to address the global needs. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
saheb11123
2m black and bronze are beauty of two cartridges. I have a friend who has these and also a nagaoka but haven't heard the later. Sent from my AO5510 using Tapatalk

The closest I have to it is my rebodied SC35C with HE stylus, my 3rd favorite cart. Its frequency response isn't as linear though. My favorite cart was my mahogany bodied Denon DL103, followed by my shibata tipped DL303. The DL303 on the other hand matches the frequency response of the 2M Bronze, except with the lovely Denon house sound. Guest Muon
Hay, Matt The SC35C with HE stylus sounded nice enough, but that bloom around the vocals I probably could not live with after owning the Bronze. Not sure what else to describe it as, but the blackness around things was obscured by this bloom I described . I like a more accurate sound, as you know Still, nice for the cost though. Edit: @@MattyW Actually, It's a pity we didn't have more time to go back and forth with things, as this tends to be more revealing of differences rather than a single switch over. Maybe next time! Hmmm, I don't know what is meant by bloom. I lack the connection with the term and the sound in my mind so I can recognise it. Maybe in time. On the other hand, there's a smoothness to the Shure that's hard to beat. I still miss my DL103. Managed to snap the stylus of the replacement while removing the plastic body. Going to save for a Shibata tip + cantilever. Sent from my HUAWEI MT7-L09 using Tapatalk

Guest Muon
How would you know when a stylus is worn out otherwise? if you wait till you are hearing obvious distortions you have likely already damaged records in ya' collection.
