  1. Hi there, I am not very expert in TV technology and i really need your advice. I have a Samsung Smart TV 7 series (bought in Dubai) and i am not able to get Free-to-Air Channels. I dont have any STB and no pay tv like Foxtel etc. I am not a big TV buff but want to watch free channels. I tried to setup using auto-tune and manual tune, but no luck. Also, there is something called "Area/Region" for setting channel in TV and i dont have "Australia" option in the list. I live in an apartment and each unit has a point to connect. Most of the people in my building are receving good signal and able to watch free channels. I called Samsung support and they said my tv doesn't has/support Australia frequency. They advised me to check with local retail shops or buy new TV. I dont want to buy new tv. does it work if i buy a Set up box such as Dick Smith HD Digital Set Top Box with USB PVR. I really need your advice. Thanks in advance. Pras
  2. Hello all! I'm on the hunt for a stereo AM/FM tuner to add to my elderly father's Denon system. His receiver recently gave up the ghost and he is now sporting a PMA-720ae amplifier and a DCD-520ae CD player. He is barely past steam power when it comes to adopting modern technology and loves his ABC classical FM so I'm looking to add a fairly simple tuner that ideally fits with the style of his Amp/CD player (Network players etc would be wasted) My question is what Denon model tuner would be best suited? My googling efforts bring up a bewildering array of units. Any advice would be much appreciated. (Also if anyone is selling a suitable unit by all means get in touch). Thanks in advance, Yuri.

  4. I have been lucky with road side hifi gear I have picked-up. First there was a Sanyo TT. Required a little work, new belt, cart and head shell but works well. A CD player and recently an Onkyo old school, 1980s FM\AM tuner. The power cord and RCA cable was cutaway and it had spent a few days in pouring rain. A $6 three pin power cord and some heavy duty gold plated RCAs was all that was needed to get this analogue relic going. And does it go? Great sound, good bass, no hiss (I have a good FM aerial). A vernier at the front is lit and the pointer PLUS, a signal strength bar LEDs FM\AM and a stereo LED. Love it and best, for free!
  5. The exceedingly rare Sansui TU-X711 was Sansui's last venture into high-end FM, 12 years after the TU-X1 (Sansui's top-of-line fully analogue AM/FM statement tuner). The TU-X711's circuit-identical precursor, the TU-X701, placed 15th out of 84 highly regarded tuners in FMTunerInfo's famed sound quality shootout (beating the superb Sansui TU-717 by two places). In stock form this is the quietest tuner I have ever heard: stereo noise on a good wide/local signal is about -90 dB ...incredible ! As good as the TU-X711 is, in stock form, it can be substantially improved to bring it near the very top in sound quality. When these tuners very occasionally surface on eBay (usually in Germany) they are typically about €300 plus shipping to Oz. Here is my offer: Enhance my personal TU-X711, and get one FREE to enhance for yourself! I have two Sansui TU-X711s ! Both waiting to be enhanced, but I have neither the experience nor dexterity for such a task. I handed these tuners over to someone who, unfortunately for me (but not for him) has been phenomenally busy since then and will be for the foreseeable future. So I've retrieved them and I'm offering again. I do have excellently clear instructions, by FMTunerInfo contributor JohnC in the US, who has made these changes to a TU-X701 with apparently stunning results, and I have the full service manual and circuit diagram. The motherboard and daughterboards (power, MPX) are well laid out and easy to access above and below. Here is the list of suggested modifications and a few post-mod photos of JohnC's TU-X701: TU-X701 DIY Unless noted all caps are Panasonic FR, Panasonic FM, Nichicon HE, or Panasonic FC as available and in this order of preference. Orient the new cap with the long lead in the negative side of the 77 cap hole and the short lead in the negative side of the 100 cap. Desolder the 2043 JRC 6504 op-amp and replace with an op-amp socket and OPA2604 (for now) Replace the power cable (internal and external) by audio grade cable. I'd much prefer to see the external power cable replaced by an IEC socket, which would require some (neat) metalwork. If you can't do this, it is not a deal-breaker. Post-enhancement photos, courtesy of JohnC and FMTunerInfo.com: If you are interested in taking up the challenge, please contact me privately. Cheers Warren
  6. I finally lashed out on a Sansui TU-X1 tuner. Gotta love something worth more now than when it was new over 35 years ago, but they have a great reputation and I do desperately want to be able to listen to live concerts when possible...sort of make it a date with my wife, put the kids to bed and retreat to the music room to listen to Mahler down at QPAC or the BBC proms at Royal Albert Hall. So I call a local antenna mob about installing something on the roof to point at the Bunya Mountains so my ancient, overpriced, oversized black box of Japanese beauty can help me enjoy quality time with my lovely wife that I no longer have to woo but want to anyway. But there is a spanner in my plan...the antenna guy has never done an FM installation and I don't really know enough about what I need to be sure someone like that gives me the right tool for the task. Who am I gonna call? Where do I find info on the antenna I need in my specific situation? What can I read? All help appreciated. Cheers, Anthony

  17. Item: Retro JVC amplifier JA-S44 (50w x 2) with VU meters and inbuilt SEA graphic instead of tone controls - yes, I know these things can be abused, but they are actually useful in correcting for room acoustics! The Yamaha T-460 tuner has that nice green glowing tuner scale. The speakers are my own build, using Foster SLE 8" drivers which have a fairly broad range, plus paper cone mid/treble and a Motorola supertweeter for a bit of extra sparkle. Location: Sydney Price: $269 Item Condition: used but very good Reason for selling: reducing clutter, making room for more speaker building Payment Method: Pickup - Cash, Paypal, COD Only Extra Info: As with all my speakers, these are a well-balanced and detailed presentation. The Foster SLE woofers are hard to get, and use a unique combination of rigid cone, double spider suspension, and a small air gap instead of a conventional roll-surround. I have kept a spare pair of these for possible future use! The amplifier has been serviced not long ago and is working well. The tuner does a great job too, while looking very cute. Nice system for beginner or student, or anyone really! My other ad here for speakers is: My build - Coral three-way floor standing speakers. 20. Well regarded tuner in its day. In good used condition I also have an Arcam alpha 8 tuner
  21. Further information: This is a really nice tuner from Pioneer's 1979-1982 fluoroscan series. It is super sensitive, picking up FM signals with just speaker wire. There are a few minor marks on the faceplate, but the pictures make them look worse than they are. The AM antenna is intact. If you own a 508, 608 or 708 amp, this tuner looks great alongside them. I've included a net picture as an example. Note: The Denon tuner in the picture is available in a separate listing.
