  1. Quick Question ........ Working on some vintage Goodmans Magnum K ...... Does it make any difference sound wise if I mount the original drivers at the front of the baffle rather than at the back of the baffle ( which is how they are originally ) ......... please note that I will not be reselling these so originality is not an issue .... these are keepers.... I realise if I do this : - there will be a slight increase in internal volume. ( they are sealed cabinets and I'm thinking that the tiny volume increase will be not be crucial to sound ) - the original speakers have no attempt at time alignment so if I mount all the drivers on the front it will keep the original distance alignment My gut feeling based on total ignorance and flying by the seat of my pants is that this will be OK ......... Would love some quick feedback from the , as always, wonderful and knowledgable Stereonutters out there ..... With thanks. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- PS : At a later date in the build, I will be substituting a different tweeter ( got a nice Aurum Cactus ribbon. G3Si which could be interesting as a lot of UK Goodmans sites say that the original Magnum tweeter could be perhaps bettered ) and perhaps a different midrange ( some vintage Vifa M10MD-39 that are really very nice ). and they will be mounted on the front or back of the baffle or a mixture of both ....... anyway, a bit of a play............ but at this stage, just interested in the above quick question.
  2. Hi, just thought I'd share some photos of my recently completed first speaker build - Zaph Audio's design for the Hi-Vi B3S. The idea was to start small as a practice run before having a go at the Zaph SR71s, and given how happy I am with the sound of these I can't wait to have the SR71s done. The paint job didn't turn out exactly as planned. the metallic (hardly noticeable in the photos due to the persistent lack of sunlight in Perth at the time of photographing) gun metal grey on the cabinets doesn't contrast as much as I would have liked with the satin black baffles. Given that these are probably the best pair of speakers I've owned, I'm hardly an expert; but to my ears and compared to other speakers I have laying around for comparison, the Zaph B3S produces a very detailed sound with great imaging and a nice tone particularly for vocals which seem to be presented more forward and with great clarity. Due to the small fullrange design they sound more compressed / lack of dynamics on louder, busier tracks which is hardly surprising. Used as nearfield speakers on a desk etc I think they are fine without a sub as long as you have reasonable expectations. when I put them into my main system crossed over with a sub it obviously greatly improved the bass response. Cheers Dan. finished cabinets first coat of sealer / primer ready for painting assembly the finished product
