  1. The Situation My listening levels, taste in music, and windows for listening to it are not entirely compatible with my partner's work-from-home situation, or my child's sleep (not that she sleeps consistently anyway). I need headphones. What I Have I already have a Topping D90 DAC and have an A90 in the works as soon as A2A can source it (chosen because I can also use it as a preamp for a different project). I am not opposed to a tube amp at some point, but it's not going to happen straight off the bat. I have some old closed back Audio-Technica ATH-A700Xs that are fun with their midrange push but are honestly more a jazz listener's headphone and that's not a big genre for me. Also my wife has borrowed them for work as her little KEF M500 pads have given out yet again. What I Listen To Bigger genes with me are Thrash, Sludge, Doom on the metal side of things, Indie if it has any guts to it or is well written, Electronic Ambient, IDM, Industrial, some Pop if it's decent, atmospheric soundtracks (especially video game), some Hip Hop, odd stuff. Triangulating My Preferred Sound In speakers, I like the tightness of my NS-1000Ms' bass, if not the extension, but find the top end only just tolerable with a tube amp, depending on the recording. I do love their speed, though, and that piano sounds like piano. I like the slightly more relaxed nature of my Special Forties for long seasons, but find the bass a little too dumpy at times, and the treble a bit, shaped? The KEF Q series towers and Rotel amp I have in the living room are also good, but they need a sub to fill things out. They are pretty much perfectly even, but, as such, not always engaging. In headphones, my experience is extremely limited. The ATH-A700X mentioned above are fun, but not for every genre, and as my speaker stuff has improved I've noticed the shortcomings of these cans. When I bought them I A/Bed them against Oppo PM-3s, which were pleasant, but extremely boring to me at the time, especially with metal. Special Requirements - not fussed about open or closed, as I have my own room, but if I can tick every box with closed, great - no leather (I'm not interested in debating it - it's my preference and that's that) - option for a balanced cable, if it doesn't come with one Budget $1000 Max at present Options I'm Considering Sennheiser HD600, HD660S HIFIMAN Sundara Shure SRH1540 (potentially boring, distorts at higher levels?) Audio-Technica ATH-R70X (poor build?) Focal Elex (reliability issues, Drop wait time and returns dramas?) So, with all that said, please impart your wisdom and let me know what I should look at! FWIW I am in regional Victoria so audition ain't really possible logistically.
  2. Hello, I've just reluctantly listed my ESS-amt 1d's which I love but sadly just aren't practical for my space(/cats!) anymore. I'm particularly going to miss the open transparent sound of the Heil AMT tweeters which I really love. Very keen to get some recommendations on speakers with similar relaxed, open sound profile. I play a lot fo jazz, folk, soundtracks, orchestral etc. Could be bookshelf or floorstanders, budget around $750-$1k. I;v always been a vintage/second-hand buyer before but happy to explore something brand new too. Thanks, M
  3. Hi everyone, I currently have an RME ADI-2 DAC that I use with my headphones, but the itch to upgrade is always there... I also have a Bryston BHA-1 as well, but I'm planning to sell that as well to fund the upgrade. My shortlist includes: Violetric V590 Questyle CMA Twelve iFi Pro iDSD Chord Hugo TT2 Luxman DA-250 Matrix Audio Element X Burson Conductor 3X Mytek Brooklyn Naim Uniti Atom Headphone Edition The TT2 is the absolute most I can stretch my budget, so things like Chord Dave and dCS Bartok are out of reach for me unfortunately... Any suggestions/advice on what the best DAC/Amp combo is will be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
  4. Hi all, I'm looking for something to travel with that will give me the treble-forward-but-not-harsh sound signature of my ATH-A700s (which are far too big). Bluetooth is preferable (I broke my USB-C adaptor), as is NC (I have a few flights coming up) , but I'll go to cable in a heartbeat if the sound is right. I've already tried Audio-Technica ATH-AR5BTs (great build quality, treble that would frighten a dentist), and Sennheiser HD4.50BTNCs (uncomfortable, uninspiring). I realise this $200-500 bracket is a bit low rent for most here, but any tips would be appreciated. Cheers.
  5. Hi All, I am new to home audio and have been wanting to get set up with a decent music set up at home for a while and I am finally in the position to start my room space is on the small to medium size and should not need a set up that is very loud but just produces good good sound at medium volume The main use case of my system will be 2 things. 1. Play vinyl records as I build out a modest collection 2. Play Lossless streaming audio (Apple Music) for other music (I also have a Sonos Play 1 which I still use for casual wireless listening) by connecting my phone/iPad to the amp. So far these are the components I have been thinking of Turntable - Pro-Ject Shop Debut Carbon Evo - Already purchased I was originally thinking to keep costs down of maybe getting powered speakers like Kanto YU6 or TUK's (Which are now on sale in Aus. for $529 & $960 respectively) but after reading a bit more about it and speaking to couple people maybe separate components will give me better performance.. esp since I have already spent like $850 on good turntable? Speakers - Monitor Audio Monitor 100 heard them and liked the sound of them currently on sale for around $250 which seems pretty good for the price Amplifiers NAD C316V2BEE which I can see on sale for $490 good reviews, good design and has phono pre-amplifier which should hopefully serve me well - downside I would need to buy DAC to connect to play lossless streaming I believe Denon PMA-600NE - $729 decent reviews I don't like the design as much but in addition to phono also has DAC which is helpful Rotel A11 Tribute - $989 Great reviews nice design no DAC and getting up the price curve esp if I then have to add DAC but very very good reviews Cambridge Audio AXA35 or AXR100 both seem good at $799 & $1,080 but again climbing up in price and then it also got me thinking should I be spending less on amp and more on speakers (even though I did like the sound of the Monitor 100's ) Any feedback on any or all items above would be more than welcome as I feel like I now going around in circles a little in terms of a decision! I am also open to buying second hand but feel do not have enough confidence to know what to get
