  1. Anybody had any positive reports or experiences on their preamps... gotta say I really like what I'm reading about them.
  2. Hi I'm looking at buying a cheap Rotel RA-12 to use as a pre-amp. But I do not know if the pre-outs are variable or fixed? I've looked everywhere for the answer! Does anybody know or able to find out? I have found out that the RA-12 is almost exactly the same as the RA-630, if that helps giving the answer. Thanks for any help.
  3. Grabbed a second hand Sony TA-N330ES Power Amp last weekend. Lovely unit - I rather like it. Never owned Sony before, so makes a nice change. Also this is my first ever power amp. I don't have a pre-amp. I don't have a multimeter. http://www.thevintageknob.org/sony-TA-N55ES.html The TA-N55ES and TA-N330ES seem to be the same unit as far as I can tell. Mine has a switchable voltage (120, 220, 240v), and one input. It has an 'attenuator' on the front, which is a pot which works like a volume control. It has a 'notched' central point at 12 o'clock which you can feel when turning. PC -------usb------> Firestone Audio Fubar MkII DAC --------rca------> TA-N330ES -----speaker cable-------> horrible old big box freebie speakers TA-N330ES service manual states: TA-N330ES user manual states: I can't find the exact specs for the Firestone Audio Fubar MkII DAC, http://www.computeraudiophile.com/content/183-firestone-audio-fubar-ii-usb-dac-review/ but a post from the former US distributor on a blog states: It all sounds ok and works well. I use the attenuator as a volume control, set between 7 and 10 o'clock. If I set the attenuator to the centre position, it would probably blow the speakers. What's the problem? It sounds a little thin, and lacks the bass that I expected. the TA-N330ES provides less bass than the low end tripath chip amp that it directly replaced. Do I need a pre-amp? Thanks! Edit 1: I always have source PC software volume set at 100% as a general rule. With the above setup, if I reduce the software volume to about 25% it allows me to set the attenuator at 12 o'clock. The sound possibly has more depth and bottom end with these settings, and sounds closer to what I was expecting. That could be listening bias.

  5. HI all I recently purchased a Rega Elex R integrated amp. I am really happy with the sound but would like to experiment with a tube pre- or power amp. My question is does anyone know if I can: 1 - Add a tube power amp to the pre-amp output and use the Elex R as a pre-amp only 2 - Feed a tube pre-amp into one of the Line-in jacks and use the Elex R as a power amp only. If so does this bypass the Elex R pre-amp. I've added a photo below. Grateful for any advice.

  11. Item: McIntosh MX151 AV Control Centre Location: Sydney Price: $4,900 Item Condition: Used, flawless Reason for selling: Upgraded to the MX160 Payment Method: Pickup - Cash, Paypal, COD Only Extra Info: Served as my AV Control/processor for several years - it never once let me down. The MX151 is a software upgraded version from the MX150, to include HDMI 3D passthrough. It's essentially the same as the MX160 ($24,000) but doesn't do ATMOS, 4K etc., but pretty much everything else. Still have original packaging as well as manuals and all gear associated with Mac's stunning Room Perfect implementation. While McIntosh refers to the MX150 as a control center, it is first and foremost an A/V processor. The look of the MX150 is classic McIntosh with a glass front panel and symmetric controls surrounding a bright blue fluorescent display. The MX150 is a great-looking piece of equipment and it is especially beautiful in a darkened room. The glass panel is illuminated by LEDs paired with fiber optic light diffusers. All of the controls on the front panel have a very precise feel and the volume knob is wonderfully smooth in operation. Under the display are a series of yellow indicators which show the channels received in the input audio stream and the channels that are output from the processor. The other four indicators under the display show whether the MX150 is receiving an analog signal, a digital signal, a high resolution audio signal, and whether the RoomPerfect system is engaged. The rear panel of the MX150 supports an amazing array of components and connections. The processor supports two zones and references to “ZA” and “ZB” refer to Zone A and Zone B, respectively. The MX150 receiver supports five HDMI 1.3 inputs and one HDMI 1.3 output. This is enough to handle a satellite or cable receiver / DVR, a Blu-ray player and a gaming system with two inputs to spare. The MX150 supports a full complement of analog audio and video inputs with five component video inputs, two composite video inputs, two S-Video inputs, 9 sets of stereo analog RCA inputs including one with a precision phono preamplifier, and a 7.1 multi-channel input. The MX150 supports nine digital audio inputs (four coaxial, four optical and one balanced AES/EBU). For balanced analog audio, the MX150 includes two sets of XLR stereo inputs. http://www.ultrahighendreview.com/mcintosh-mx151-av-control-center/ Pictures: (Note picture is of my MX160 - the 151 is boxed in the garage, but looks identical)

I was going to keep it for a second system but I doubt I'll ever get around to it so it time to let it go Ive had a couple of questions about which version this is so just to clarify, this is the "signature" edition. Some people seem to think the version with the quad board upgrade or USB board upgrade is the SE "signature" edition, it isnt. The signature is a complete overhaul of the previous version which was the base model with a quad board upgrade. Pictures:

  22. Item: Bryston BHA-1 Headphone Amplifier and Pre-Amplifier - Black Location: Glen Waverley, Victoria (pickup available in Docklands) Item condition description: Excellent. Price and price conditions: $1200 RRP: $2200 Selling at a thousand dollars off RRP. Reason for selling: Down-sizing Payment Methods: Paypal (add 3%), Cash - Pickup, Bank Transfer. Extra info: An excellent headphone amplifier (works for both balanced and single ended) that I initially bought for it's synergy with HE-1000 and MrSpeakers Ether. Later on I enjoyed it a great deal with the HD800. If I wasn't downsizing, I wouldn't ever sell it. I bought it because when I was trying amps worth $3000 or less at Addicted to Audio the person there (forgot his name) recommended this amp above all else. I tried it and both my wife and I really liked it; a couple of weeks later we bought it. 24. Item: ModWright LS100 valve pre-amp Location: Queensland Discovery Coast Price: $2600 (inc freight Australia-wide) Item Condition: 9.5/10 (only because it has been used!) In immaculate condition. Reason for selling: Bad timing. Thought I was going to sell the ModWright pre and power amps together, but someone unexpectedly bought the power amp AFTER I’d gone ahead and bought another pre-amp. Complicated? Yes, don’t ask for further details of my embarrassing lack of ‘system co-ordination’! Payment Method: Pickup - Cash, Direct Bank Deposit (or PayPal – but only if YOU pay the 2.4% surcharge!) Extra Info: Bought from fellow SNA member Eagle. Since then I’ve upgraded the (barely run-in) Sovtek tubes in the pre-amp to a matched pair of Sophia Electric 6SN7 power tubes, and the rectifier tube to a NOS Philips Mini Watt GZ34. The detailed and dynamic sound via this pre-amp will thrill your ears. Seriously! Pictures: See below. I could rightly be classified as ‘loony’, as was Eagle, for selling this! It is only 5 months old. Here’s the link to Eagle’s original SNA “For Sale†ad: http://www.stereo.ne...odwright +ls100 Comes with the complete set of original valves (almost new, barely burned-in) Comes in original packing, so can courier Australia-wide. NOTE: Price INCLUDES courier within Australia. PLEASE don’t try and low-ball me on the asking price!
  25. Item: Bel Canto CD2 - Price drop! Location: Hobart, Tasmania Price: $1500.00 (down from $1800.00) Item Condition: Very, very good, 8/10 (see below) Reason for selling: to fund a stand alone DAC Payment Method: Pickup - Cash, Paypal, COD Only Extra Info: For sale is my beloved Bel Canto CD2 in fantastic condition. Purchased from Audio Market Place in 2009 via Ebay - it was a demo model. Sounds great, wonderful to use and has never missed a beat. The only issues to speak of are some fine scuff marks on the top of the unit where the puck has been placed between changing cds, and a dimple/dent on the remote control just above the name - see pics, I have no idea where that came from. Unfortunately the fine scuff marks have not been captured on the photo very well, but are very light. Comes with original wall wart power supply, manual and original packaging (double-boxed). I always wanted to pair it with a BC DAC3 but it never happened. Pictures:
