  1. Further Information: Features SME 3009 tonearm and Ortofon 2M Red cart with new spare stylus. Bought this a few years ago from an acquaintance but have only used it once or twice as the vibration from my wooden floors are not great with it. Previous owner had it serviced and set up and I have since re-checked cart alignment and spring stability and it's still good. I can audition but is not an ideal listening environment given the floor movement issue noted above.
  2. I am seeking some advice/opinions from the more experienced members about the Ortofon M20E Super cartridge with Linn Ittok LV II tonearm. I have to admit that I am not clued in at all when it comes to cartridge and tonearm combinations, particularly the Linn Sondek LP12 parts and upgrades. My turntable came with this cart/tonearm configuration when I bought it, so I've always wondered if changing to a different cart would yield a sound improvement (no pun intended), not that it sounds bad, I actually don't mind how it sounds at the moment. I have a number of carts that I wanted to try but just not sure whether they'd be suitable for the Ittok LV II tonearm, for instance in terms of compliance, etc... Maybe the Ortofon M20E Super is already better than everything else I've got, for example - Denon DL-110 & DL-103 LCII, Ortofon 2M Red, AT95E - Who knows? Over to you...
  3. As the main Star Wars saga concludes, I came across this blast from the past (see photo which for some reason has rotated 90deg). This was very much in keeping with the cheeky Linn & Naim marketing at the time but timeless in its message nonetheless. The main difference for mine is that the Source these days starts at the mastering/file quality, pre the turntable / CD player.
  4. Hi all, I have an early LP12, which I have had for more than 20 years, though it was at least that old when I purchased it. Like many of its ilk, it has gone through changes over the years, initially, getting a late pre-cirkus bearing and subplatter along with new springs and grommets. It grumbled along for some time with a basik plus, having not had the coin to buy an ittok at the time. It has had a number of cartridge partners, spending most of its time with a couple of generations of AT-OC9's, though it has latterly found a VdH frog to pair with. The Basik plus left the building, replaced with a Jelco 750D, which was a clear improvement. Most recently, replaced the subchassis and bearing with a Kore and Cirkus, which has been a clear improvement, clearly tightening up the bass, and making balancing the springs easier. The motor and power supply is a valhalla, and despite having considered change this, I have not as yet. This is on the cards at some time in the medium term. As a result of all this action, I have a trove of LP12 bits'n'pieces, and a turntable on a classic plinth, which I am considering replacing. The plinth itself is very early- it is afromasia with fluting on all four sides, and no corner bracing. The corners are all tight, and plinth is not warped, though it is a couple of mm out of square, which you notice when the armband is in place. On the other side of the plinth, the top plate sits evenly and tightly. I am considering doing one of a number of things, and would appreciate the advice of the forum. Ideally I would like to get a new plinth. I have seen booplinths and Harban plinths, and whilst they look (and possibly sound) amazing, I am not sure that I want to sink my cash into one at the cost of upgrading the motor in the medium term. Is anyone else aware of other reasonable options out there? I have seen a number on ebay, though new linn options from the UK seem limited by geographic sales limitations, second hand options come up from time to time, though provenance and quality is a concern, and there is a maker in Barcelona, called woodoo plinths, which looks reasonable, though reviews are lacking. The other option I am considering is bracing my own plinth, though this is not my first choice, as I would prefer to have the parts to put together a second LP12 to sell, going towards a power supply upgrade. Please help me to narrow down my choice! Cheers and thanks. Justin
  5. WHY OH WHY BUY LINN? Why is it that Linn products hold such a complete hold over their adherents? silly wobbly things with fatally failed suspensions that they worship to the exclusion of all other components infinitely tweaked in a futile attempt to rectify the unrectifiable. they even fight amongst themselves modernist linnies are reviled bt traditionalists for diverting from the one true path Why when really they have all wandered from the pilgrims progress along the straight and narrow path into the linn slough of despair.
  6. Linn have put together a roadshow known as the "Linn Lounge" which demonstrates iconic artists at their best on a Linn system in Studio Master, the highest quality available, anywhere. Upcoming Australian Events: http://www.stereo.net.au/news/upcoming-linn-lounge-events/
  7. Audio Connection held a Linn Exakt night recently as part of the Linn Lounge tour. StereoNET members were invited, but sadly tickets went very fast and I'm not sure how many attended. Audio Connection features the first showroom in the country to demonstrate the new $100,000 Klimax Exakt system from Linn. Some photos from the evening:
  8. Seems Edmund has been working on a new bearing housing for his SSP12 inner platter. It appears to be a double ball race design going by the cross-section diagram on the Linn forum. The Mober certainly spins a lot longer than the Cirkus bearing. I wonder if there is any difference in SQ. Mober bearing housing: Linn Cirkus bearing housing:
  9. G’day all, I have a 1977/78 Linn Sondek LP12 and although I’m highly tempted, I don’t want to do any upgrades (again). Instead, I want to change to a simpler turntable which isn’t upgradable, to remove any ‘upgrade-itis’ and just be happy with what I have. Don’t get me wrong, I like the turntable and how it sounds, but I can’t help but be sucked into the plethora of (mostly expensive) upgrade options, and I envy all those people with their Klydes, Keels, Radikals and Ovakills! I’d like opinions as to whether or not I’ll get better performance for equal (or a bit more) money, by selling the Linn and buying something else - like a Funk Firm Vector V. I haven’t listened to one yet - I want to assess my options first and seek opinions, but it appeals to me because it’s potentially an endgame-component to begin with, which doesn’t tempt you down an upgrade path. It doesn’t have an external PSU (or require an upgrade to one), has a DC motor, and has a simple speed switch on the turntable itself. I am open to having the ability to upgrade the tonearm over time. An all-in-one unit without external components is a preference - I’m trying to trim down my ‘bits’. So my question is, what is my Linn worth and is there a turntable/arm that will better it for similar money? I don’t have the budget to go spending heaps more. Linn specs: Original Afromosia non-braced plinth, bearing, motor, spot welded sub-chassis, etc. Overhauled by Craig Salter ‘Promusica’ a few years ago and he installed the following: New Rega RB251, Michell Tecnoweight, Michell 3-point VTA adjuster. Mose Hercules PSU New armboard New belt, mat, springs, etc, along with service and rebuild. My meagre setup: Quasimodo Mini 20wpc (Richard McDonald) 'Mimic’ (Mark/Retro Thermionic) MM Battery Phono DCM Time Window speakers
  10. Hi, I live in northwest Sydney and was wondering if someone can point me in the direction of a Linn guru who might be able to set up my turntable. many thanks.
  11. I have a Linn LP12 which has developed significant hum, probably due to a cable fracture. It's a mid 1990s model with the Valhalla power supply and was serviced with the new bearings etc about 10 years ago But now needs a proper service likely with recabling of the tonearm (Rega RB300 arm). I cannot find anyone in Brisbane who has expertise in this particular area does anyone have any recommendations?
  12. Hi, Have been researching first decent turntable for a while. An opportunity for the above combo may have arisen...asking price being $1200. Is this a fair price? Are there any obvious/known issues with this old turntable? I note that in some forums PSU problems are commonly reported...I don't want hassle, I want reasonable sound for reasonable price, preferably with electronic speed control. Cheers
  13. Hi, I'm a new member with a set of IMF Super Compacts I've owned for round 30+ years! I'd appreciate some advice or tips from some perhaps more analytical audiophiles on a planned upgrade. I'm about to refurb the IMF's with new caps & tweeters (audax) i did the driver foams a few years ago. They have served well but Ive had mediocre receivers and in process of deciding on either replacing with 2nd hand gear: - a Linn Classik receiver - or a NAD AV receiver, any opinions on which will be best sound? Both units between 3-$400 The Linn has a cd player, my current cd player is an everyday pioneer and my dvd/blueray player is a LG with 500GB hard drive I play mix of acoustic guitar, rock, smooth jazz, opera , piano etc. In addition to refurb my IMFs and upgrading amplification I'm considering building a pair of IMF TLS50 or similar, I owned a pair of TLS50 copies for a week in Bris 35 years ago, in my ignorance I thought they were faulty because my Luxman receiver couldnt drive them so i sent them back to the seller - ongoing regrets - they were well made i just didnt understand that particular Luxman was a mediocre piece of gear. Anyhow, any recommendations' on which IMF models would suit the amps I'm looking at as a 2nd pair of spkrs in a surround sound setup? Thanks for your interest. John Nth Qld Australia

  16. Item: Vintage ERA-3033 turntable, 1975 Location: Chisholm 2322 NSW Price: $550 Item Condition: As new Reason for selling: Too many turntables! Payment Method: Pickup - Cash, Paypal, COD Only Extra Info: Will ship for $40. Yes, I know how to pack a tt! This is a really super “as new” turntable from high end audio French manufacturer, ERA. (Etudes et Recherches Acoustiques, or Acoustic Studies & Research, located in Paris) This mid-70s ERA5055 model is a high-quality turntable for serious audiophiles that was pitched directly against brands like Linn and Thorens. While cheaper than Linn, prices were on par with Thorens. Their selling points were: · Cast alloy suspended baseplate. The baseplate supports the platter together with the tonearm and cueing mechanism is similar to that of Linn and Thorens models, except that ERA used cast alloy instead of pressed steel, which was a far more elegant very French approach. There is a single shipping screw to lock down the baseplate during transport. · The bearing is a captive ball bearing in a silicon bronze sleeve pressed into the alloy shaft that is integral with the cast suspended baseplate. This design keeps the spindle absolutely aligned with the baseplate and it cannot move out of alignment. There is no play in the bearing. · The platter is a weighty two-piece system with the sub-platter driven by a 4mm wide belt, same size as Thorens TD160 etc, so easy to replace. · Motor drive is the superbly reliable and accurate 48-pole synchronous motor running at a slow 250rpm, the same motor used by Linn. It is switched to run on 110V and 240V. Motor made in Holland. · Drive pulley is stainless steel, not plastic. · Suspension is by Silentbloc, ie. damped spring system. The suspension has been re-adjusted as part of its service. · Two speeds, 45 and 33 · Tonearm is a gimbal type low-mass with a built in anti-skate dial at the base and height adjustable. · VTF (Vertical Tracking Force) is adjusted with a single weight on the rear of the tonearm and then fine adjusted with a Vernier slider weight. Points to note: · This machine has been in storage for a number of years. It has been cleaned and serviced so that it now looks and runs just as well as did in the 70s. There is zero corrosion inside and out. In fact, it looks as if it rolled off the assembly line yesterday! · The deck is 2.5mm coated steel plate, so very stiff and solid. · The suspended baseplate is 3-pronged, stiff cast alloy. · Belt: Belt has been replaced. · Supplied with a small container of 10W30 spec full synthetic oil for the bearing and spindle. Will need oiling before use as I’ve cleaned out the sleeve and spindle for transport. · Cartridge: No cartridge, but can install and align brand new Ortofon OM10 for extra $60. · The Plexiglas lid is in “as new” condition, unmarked and shiny. The hinges have removable pins to facilitate removal if you prefer to play records with the lid off. Pins not needed to articulate, only if you want a permanent install. · Power cord is audio RCA plugs and wires are as-new. Power plug is Euro 2-pin so will supply adapter. · Platter mat and its metal centre disk is in as-new condition · Speed has been checked and is perfect. I measured 33.33 and 45.1RPM, so you can’t better that! · Controls: There are 2 controls. 1. Speed selector LHS; 3. Combined Start/Cueing lever RHS. Like most high-end audiophile-quality tables, this one is manual apart from auto-off at the end of the recordwhen the stylus enters the run-out groove. Everything works as it should and it sounds truly excellent. There are no plastic components in the ERA, just all metal construction and mounted in a nice wooden plinth which is in as-new condition. All components in the ERA are serviceable. The wooden plinth has been given a light wipe over with furniture oil and it looks simply stunning. As the French would say “Superb!” Pictures:

  18. Further information: Up for sale is Linn Klimax DS/1, It has been upgraded to DS/3 with the latest Katalyst dac upgrade on January 2020 with full 5 years warranty since. Please note this was a ds/1 originally, not the early DS or DS/0 version, the difference is from ds/1 onwards the power switch moved from the back of unit to the bottom. ( refer to my pic ) . Comes with original packaging and remote. 19. Item: Linn Kivor Oktal 8 channel DAC with 2 channel Analogue to Digital converter Location: Coogee Sydney Price: $275 (FIRM) plus postage. Item Condition: Looks: Average. Operation: Excellent Reason for selling: I bought this for an active digital set-up that never eventuated. Payment Method: Pickup - Cash, Paypal, Direct Deposit Extra Info: I purchased this off the venerable @Jventer for an active digital system but unfortunately I couldn’t get it to work with a nano-digi (up for sale as well when I find it), others more skilled than me might be able to get it happening. It has been doing A/D duties to integrate my turntable to my digital set-up since I sold my pre amp. It has to be the ugliest bit of kit to have ever sat on a shelf in my place, but forgive it its age and looks and you will have a very nice sounding 8-channel DAC with transparent A/D converter. These retailed for well over $5000 back in the early 2000s. It has scratches on the faceplate, and some marks to the top. No original box but it is light and easy to package for safe transport at purchaser risk and expense. Jventer’s original add is here: http://www.stereo.net.au/forums/topic/79054-sold-fs-linn-dac/ - comment-1311807 Linn Specs: http://docs.linn.co.uk/wiki/images/3/32/Kivor_OktalSpec.pdf Local pick-up preferred but can post if you are patient. Pictures: Rotel amp in last pic not included.
  20. Item: Linn Majik Isobarik in Rosenut Location: Sydney Price: $3900 $3400 (RRP $8795) + shipping costs Item Condition: Excellent, apart from some minor marks on the base plate, and the one corner has a slight imperfection. (See pictures) Reason for selling: Moving towards a different colour and price band. Payment Method: Pickup - Cash, Bank Transfer, Paypal (+2.6%) Extra Info: These go very deep and has very low bass distortion due to the isobarik configuration. An omni-directional bass output makes the speaker less sensitive to placement. They would also suit someone who wants a speaker for both music and home theatre; you wouldn't need a subwoofer. I've tried them without issues on the following amplifiers: (in 4 ohm as these as 4 ohm speakers) Naim Nait XS2 (100W) Rotel RB-991 (300W) Musical Fidelity A3.2 CR (225W) Cyrus Stereo 200 (325W) DIY push pull Kt150 tube (100W) These speakers have the option to be upgraded either to active, or partially active. In partially active only the bass drivers are active, and could then be driven on a much smaller amplifier. In passive mode they can be quad amplified, with four separate binding posts per speaker. I have the boxes, but shipping might cost a lot as they are 34kg each. I've done a quote for someone in Melbourne at $110. Local pickup is possible too. Information from Linn: http://small.linncdn.com/product-catalogue/documents/Linn_Majik_Isobarik_Product_Information.pdf
  21. Further information: condition as pictured, would make an awesome project at home No electronics and the condition of the woofer unknown Photos:
  22. Further information: Most likely the best example of this model you will ever come across as a complete setup, being in almost faultless condition and fitted with a Linn Akito tonearm and top-of-the-line Ortofon 2M Black MM cartridge. Never needing repair but set up and upgraded by turntable maestro Rick Powell, who rates the Akito ahead of an Ittok for musicality. It comes with special mat, upgraded RCA plugs and Michell clamp as a bonus. This turntable model has flown under the radar compared to the more renowned LP12, but apart from sharing some of its sonic virtues, the Axis has certain advantages. Speed is selected at the press of a button rather than the clumsy 45rpm adaptor needed for earlier LP12s. The rear plinth houses an IEC socket, allowing a potential power cable upgrade.( I can include a standard power lead, or a choice of audiophile grade leads at extra cost. The quality of this particular turntable warrants such an upgrade and makes a joke of the earlier LP12 thin lamp-chord power lead). Being solid-mounted rather than sprung means that set up is simpler and less temperamental. Some would argue that solid mounting produces more "solid" bass, but what can't be argued is that transportation is much more straightforward. I certainly would have no qualms packing safely for interstate freight. Price is firm. Given the value of an Akito arm in superb condition and lightly used 2M Black sold separately, the turntable comes almost free in this package. Very practical and hassle-free, with exceptional cost-performance. Donation to SNA on sale. 23. Further information: Re-listing my Linn Klimax DS streamer. This was purchased ex-demo from audioconnection in 2013 as the heart of a complete Linn system (I have upgraded to the DSM). It is an original DS/1 (not previously upgraded) which has the Linn Dynamik power supply and built in room correction (Space Optimisation). This essentially allows you to place the speakers where you want and it will make them sound as if they are in a more ideal position. As LInn’s top-of-the-line streamer (still in production but with the newer Katalyst DAC architecture) this unit performs at the highest level and is widely regarded as one of the best available. I have heard the latest Katalyst and, while it takes the Klimax to a deeper level of insight, I have not been impelled to fork out the extra $8k just yet because, as it stands, the sound is still so very musical and appealing. This unit is solidly engineered (and hefty) and in very good cosmetic condition. One of the feet is slightly loose but is not noticeable once installed as it sits very stable. I have the original boxes and packaging so can ship at an agreed cost. Message me for any further details. Photos: PLEASE READ If you are advertising multiple items, you must post one bulk price only, or post seperate ads for each item If you include any reference to pricing whatsoever in this section (excluding RRP), your ad will not be approved If you don't include photographs of the actual item being sold, your ad will not be approved

Information from Linn: http://small.linncdn.com/product-catalogue/documents/Linn_Majik_Isobarik_Product_Information.pdf They went for $8795 before they were discontinued last year. The following are the actual speakers, except for the one with the side cut open.
  25. Item: LINN LP12 turntable Location: Perth Price: 2500 Item Condition: Used Reason for selling: No longer needed Payment Method: Pickup - Cash, Paypal, COD Only Extra Info: This does not have matching numbers. It is a pre circus, Valhalla with a basic plus arm, with a choice of either a Garrot P77 or Linn Klyde both with plenty of life left. This is my second LP12 and had a full disassemble clean and rebuild with new springs and rubber, new outer plater and clear Linn lid and hinges. Table sounds great and looks very nice. Pictures:
