  1. Further Information: RRP ~$1000 (499ea) This is for two sets. Fantastic set of leads for an absolute steal. Offering the perfect entry to premium cable by way of SR's entry point, these give one the most magnificent soundstage for the dollar I've yet heard, and allow an enormous amount more detail to reveal itself. While their high end is flat out my favourite cable, period, the Core series deserves credit and immense respect for what they could pull off anywhere near its price. Happy to ship Australia-wide, and typically happy to include freight unless it makes the sale redundant.
  2. Further Information: RRP $575 Brilliant entry-upgrade cable from the boffins at AudioQuest. Simple styling, exceptional build - and even better audio - quality for the money, the Red River series offers ENORMOUS improvements to the impact and overall presence of the system to which it is connected, at a price that is hardly offensive. As a longer, easy to run set, this is perfect for those requiring additional distance between components. Still in great condition overall, save for a few marks on the XLR shells themselves. Happy to ship Australia-wide, and typically happy to include freight, unless it renders the sale redundant.
  3. Hi Everyone, Having purchased Leneham speaker cables (see thread in the sponsor forum), I will be ordering a pair of Lenehan interconnects in May. It's my upgrading process and buying locally (Australian made). With consideration to WAF (or partner in other cases), does anyone have an interconnect photo to add? Just want to be safe.
  4. Like most audio fanatics, I read reviews and if there are enough fair dinkum comments the item goes on my list of good stuff to consider. But over the last few days I have been RCA plug rolling, looking for that little bit extra from my KEF LS50's. I had convinced myself that silver interconnects sound best with a direct connection from the preamp terminating into a couple of Neutrix RCA's. Having read reports that Rhodium Plated Tellurium Copper RCA Plugs with a single point return sound superb I ordered a $25 set from Ebay. The Neutrix were replaced by the Rhodium plugs and the sound was brighter but lacked 'body' so I put them aside assuming another tweak had failed. ...BRAINWAVE! What if I clean them with my 100% Deoxit red and gold fluids. The result was a big surprise. The missing 'body' was there and the transparency was magic. I also cleaned the Neutrix but the Rhodiums sounded better. Naively, I just assumed that new connectors would be perfectly clean. Not necessarily! Perhaps silver wire with Rhodium interconnects is more compatible than gold or maybe the connector is better ...who knows? But at least both comparisons were on an even footing and there is a difference in sound. (In my ears not my brain) Now to check my other interconnects. My point is, how many of us properly prepare interconnects by cleaning them when we compare them? Professional reviewers never seem to mention cleaning plugs before testing them so how can the reviews be believed?
  5. Hi I would like to build some RCA cables. I know absolutely nothing about DIY audio but thought cables might be the easiest place to start and, well I need some because the ones I currently have are crap!! My system is very modest so I am not looking for hi-end just a well constructed cable that I can build for under $50.00. I would like something that is reasonably flexible and about 1m long. I want to connect my DAC to my amp Can anyone suggest a good place start getting myself informed and possibly a step by step construction guide that a layman like myself can understand? Cheers Doug
  6. HI all, I have quick question re the above. I recently upgraded to a 2m length of Atlas ICs going from my DAC to the amp. I am quite astounded by the very noticeable improvement over the Monster RCAs I've been using for years. I finally feel my DAC rig is "getting there" I would like to get a few more pairs of these. It happens that the 2m lengths are only slightly more expensive than 1m. I would be using the new ones for the phono amp and disk player. These, however, only really need to be 1m. I have read that, of itself, a 2m length of quality cable shouldn't be an issue. My concern is of having a few sets of long IC cables hanging around the back of the rack. Would this be a potential issue? Should I keep it simple and just go for 1m for these applications? My thinking is that, all else being equal, it might be handy to have longer lengths anyway for future purposes or changes in the set up. Any thoughts welcome
  7. Hi again everyone, and hope you're enjoying the day! On my current setup journey, I've now got my turntable going in my new system, and it's already sounding great! It certainly needs some tweaking, and I reckon I could improve things greatly with a few small changes (not to mention getting some record cleaner! Suggestions welcome on that topic!). So, I have: Pro-ject 6.1 turntable with Ortofon MC10 cart > Creek Audio OBH-9SE phono stage > Wyred4Sound STP-SE pre I was wondering about experiences with cabling for starters? I had a look here, but I'm interested in silver vs copper, long vs short, RCA vs XLR - that sort of thing. http://www.stereo.net.au/forums/index.php/topic/58011-great-cheap-phono-interconects-have-to-let-you-guys-know/?hl=interconnects I will likely soon get some of these (silver interconnects) to go dac>pre and cd>pre http://stagersound.com/silver/order.htm So perhaps I should get some for the phono too? I have also started a thread about the "balanced" nature of phono signals. In my setup, I could: 1. Go RCA phono >phono stage> pre 2. RCA phono>phono stage> then RCA to XLR pre 3. Have the tone arm reward and go fully balanced (but would need a new phono stage.... Lastly, as can be seen in pics, I have cheapo cabling with "inbuilt" ground wire. Once a setup is decided upon, what's the best way to do a new ground? Awesome! Mat
  8. Hi all. I have been following a thread on which interconnects are the best value under $500 and a number of issues have popped up in my mind. But so has a solution that could fix this audiophile nightmare ...I think. The problem: Audiophiles all have their favourite cd, cartridge, preamp, amp, streamer, speakers etc. These components all differ from each other in sonic signature and electrical characteristics. Audiophiles also have their preferences of sound quality. Some prefer bright and punchy, some prefer transparent, some like warm and nostalgic. Hearing limitations obviously affect the preferred SQ of individuals as well. Listening rooms affect how a system sounds as well but some people, like myself, are limited by age and practicality as to what tweaks can be made to their room. Interconnects/Cables: I think we all agree that interconnects DO make a difference to the sound we hear and that higher quality products have the POTENTIAL of sounding superior to cheaper alternatives. But does high price or brand necessarily improve the SQ of ALL equipment. Logically it can't, because there are so many variables in play. For example, I have discovered that, in my system, the sound of individual components can be fine tuned with different interconnects. For example my FiiO X5 has different sonic characteristics to my wireless streamer and Rega CD player and they both sound different to my turntable. The streamer sounds best with silver IC's and the FiiO X5 player better with copper IC's. Sure, cable changing is probably correcting deficiencies in my equipment but it's better than not being happy with the sound. Note: I make my own cables because it gives me a cheap option to try alternatives. How can the problem of buying/testing/selling expensive interconnects be addressed? Imagine this! We jump online and check out a fictional dealer called Interconnect Vault. Maybe it could be run as a co-op for audio enthusiasts? Interconnect Vault only stock high quality interconnects. But they also have a service where you can choose a selection of interconnects from a large range to try at home on YOUR gear. How does it work? You select some interconnects in a price bracket that suits your budget. Say $100 to $500. Interconnect Vault charges a 'testing fee' based on the most expensive one selected. I would be happy to pay $100 fee if I knew I would end up with the best interconnects for MY system. The testing fee is deducted from your purchase if you decide to buy from them. Benefits to everybody: You end up with the best interconnects you can afford and don't waste money buying/testing/selling. The dealer sells heaps of products. The dealer can compile a database from the testers so that recommendations can be made to people with similar equipment, listening environment, age etc. If I was younger, richer and smarter I would have a crack at this myself.
  9. Hello people. My hand-made interconnects that were lovingly made by George Secher 15 years ago are on their way out (or my hearing is, but I had that tested so it should be okay). I have mellow tastes and am always trying to slow the system down. George knew what I was on about and got a perfect match no problem. Don't know what they were though. I'm interested in trying Van den hul, as they seem to have a reputation for calm. The cables I have bought (without trying, duh) as a replacement are Chord Chamelon VEE in a green colour. I find them very detailed and bright - what are your thoughts? Would anyone be interested in trying them? I don't mind putting them up for sale, it just might be easier to swap though. Other cables I have had (though for too long) are Tara Labs, and Audioquest - both of which are prob not of interest to anyone. The Chord ones are only year old, and have been in a draw most of the time, so no wear. Cheers. System is Creek 4330 amp, Sonus faber Venere 1.5 speakers, Marantz ST 300 Tuner, Arcam CD73.
  10. A mechanism that could explain cable burn in. I’m not saying this is wrong or right I’m just saying that from what I have read on the subject and from what I know about plastics I believe this to be a plausible theory. I’m not sure I can give GFuNK the physics behind it but I’m willing to give it a shot. I’m thinking about ICs with this but the same would apply to speaker cables. I have read somewhere (can’t remember where but I agree with it) that you don’t burn in metal, you burn in plastic. How can that happen you ask, well grab a drink and make yourself comfortable, this could take a fair amount of typing on my part. An IC is a number of strands of copper (sometimes silver) wrapped in plastic and attached to connectors. They all have connectors, so I’m not interested in them, they all have a different number of copper strands of different thicknesses, I am interested in that but not until later for now I want to focus on the copper and the plastic. Plastic, we are told, is a dielectric material and as such it can hold a charge for just a bit longer than we would like it to (referred to as its capacitance) and thus can affect the signal being sent along it. For burn in to be real that capacitance would have to change, yes? And it can, but to explain how I have to back peddle a little. Plastic as we know it is not just a homogenous substance, or, to put it another way, just as oils aint oils, plastics aint plastics. When plastic is manufactured it starts out in a large vat that contains potential plastic (called monomers) and an organic solvent. When those monomers polymerize to form a solid plastic they join together in a very haphazard fashion and some of the solvent is trapped within the plastic. Over time this solvent will slowly evaporate leaving only the plastic. That new car smell that people often talk about, that smell is the solvent evaporating from the plastic in the dash (and steering wheel, gear stick, etc) as the sun “burns in†your new cars dash the amount of solvent you can smell decreases with time until there is no more new car smell (OK, your car won’t sound different, but it is a fair analogy). I believe this is what is happening to the plastic insulation of the IC as it is in use, the current flowing through the copper is changing the properties of the plastic in contact with the wire by evaporating some of the solvent present and so the effective capacitance of the plastic changes over time until there is so little of the solvent left that the properties of the plastic stabilize and the IC is considered burnt in. Now, I said above that plastics aint plastics, this is very true. There are three main plastics that manufacturers use to insulate ICs, Teflon, Polyethylene and PVC and all have different “capacitanceâ€. Within polyethylene there are low, medium and high density polyethylene and each are manufactured in a slightly different way. They can also be applied in more than one way. I have copied the following from Redgums website. I am not trying to pick on Redgum in any way, they are just one of the few companies that actually supply a decent amount of info in regards to their IC construction. REDGUM’s RGAP 'Audio Pipeline' OFC Interconnect The Design: The REDGUM RGAP 'Audio Pipeline' OFC interconnect cables are researched, developed, designed and manufactured in conjunction with some of the most knowledgeable specialists in the industry. Designed to provide focus and sound staging, with a strong sense of three-dimensionality, resolution and detail, take a listen and prepare to be amazed! The Construction: The Centre (signal) conductor comprises of a bundle of 80 cores of 0.09mm Oxygen Free Copper conductor (OFC), lightly twisted, and encased in a special foamed polyethylene insulating jacket. Both channels are then individually screened to a low noise specification with a 12-section x 9-strand spc braided OFC sheath, designed to achieve excellent RF rejection, very low capacitance and a low noise floor. The final outer covering is a matte blue jacket with silver printing. The cable is terminated with gold-plated RCA connectors, which feature an easy grip, ergonomically designed barrel, a Teflon insulator, and matching matte blue jackets. The Result: The REDGUM RGAP 'Audio Pipeline' OFC interconnect accurately extracts the maximum available information from a recording without ever erring towards artifice or over-emphasis. The Low capacitance results in less high frequency attenuation and distortion. What you get is a cable capable of clarity and signal integrity even over very long distances. Reproduction spans a broad and unencumbered frequency range with smooth, effortless and seamless integration from very low to very high frequencies, without introducing any unnatural peaks or troughs. The Technicals: These are real-world measurements of a totally finished cable, including the gold RCA plug terminations: Length Resistance Inductance Capacitance RGAP1 1m 0.08 ohms 0.18uH @200kHz 82.3pF @200kHz RGAP05 0.5m 0.04 ohms 0.09uH @200kHz 55.7pF @200kHz The short Technical version: Is it a good cable? - Yes, it is! So we have “foamed†polyethylene (don’t know what density, but the foamed bit is interesting, it seems that Redgum have a different way of applying the dielectric to the copper wire or maybe everyone else does it too and Redgum are the only ones who tell us this, who really knows) applied to 80 cores of 0.09mm copper wire. OK, just had a thought while I was typing, if this pet theory of mine is a goer then it should take longer to burn in an IC that has more surface area of copper in contact with the dielectric, so an 80 strand IC should take longer to burn in than a 40 strand IC (assuming the same weight of copper), I wonder if anyone has ever tried. Sorry, derailed my own train of thought there. What all of this means, very broadly speaking, is that ICs are going to need different amounts of burn in depending on the number strands of metal, the plastic in use and the method of application of the plastic. Then there are the cable companies that apply custom dielectric coatings, JW audio and anti cables are two which spring to mind. They apply a thin film of some proprietary substance and claim that it has a very low capacitance. Fair enough, let’s think about this for a minute. If the dielectric is very thin then there is far less in the way of solvent that could be trapped within it, there is also less of it present to “store†charge so the capacitance of the dielectric should be minimized and any change due to burn in should also be minimized. With this in mind the protection that the dielectric offers to the copper cable is probably also minimized so this may not be the best way to go. If I can quote from another web site, Mike Lenehan has this to say about his Ribbontec IC. If anything, we are even more excited about the results from our new Ribbontek interconnect. A specific width of copper foil receives the same initial preparation as the speaker wire, but is then treated with a coating to prevent oxidation, allowing us to use an air primary dielectric. By avoiding both the undesirable interactions of stranded cable and the skin effect problems of solid core wire, the Ribbontek interconnect offers smoothness, resolution and rhythmic drive that surpasses anything we’ve heard. An “air primary dielectric†sounds like a good way to minimize any copper/plastic capacitance as well as any burn in effects. And he uses copper foil, I have a few ideas about that too but I’ll keep those for another time, another post. So, assuming anyone is still with me after wading through all that, my theory is that the effect of burn in on ICs is due to the changing of the capacitance due to the evaporation of solvent from the dielectric material of the IC sheath. Is anyone still awake out there?
  11. Has anyone compared The Rock, The Hill and/or The Mountain interconnects by Van den Hul? I would be interested to hear your descriptions of the sonic differences between them.

  16. Further information: See below for individual prices and descriptions. Martin Colloms of hifi critic rates these as among the few best ICs of all time. Google is your hifi friend. AVAILABLE The Second RCA 0.6m boxed $220 + postage each (two pairs available as per photos 1,2 & 4). These have been in storage for around 5 years. Appear lightly used. Cables are clean and connectors are tight. Boxes a bit creased and inserts a bit dusty. SOLD! The Second XLR 0.6m loose (photo 3) $260 + postage Used but good condition. Connectors tight. SOLD! The First RCA 0.8m loose (white and black connectors) (photo 5) $60 + postage I think this is the standard model (not the metal version). The plugs turn independently of the cable. I don’t think this is meant to be the case but they still transmit the signal. Sold as is. Cheap way to sample Mr Van Den Hul’s carbon masterpieces. 17. Heavy duty gold finish XLR Male to RCA interconnect cables. Hardly used.
  18. Further information: Listing the entirety of my stereo over coming weeks, these are item #3, having in the past few days sold a Plinius 9200 amp and Chord Signature speaker cables. I purchased these interconnects from another fellow on Stereonet in 2015. At that time these interconnects were a current product however a quick search of the internet suggests they are no longer in production. My understanding is that the cables are contstructed from silver & "Varalloy" (a silver & gold alloy) and that this particular example was a 'version 2' of the Komako line, the 'version 1' identifiable by a heat shrink wrap around the connectors. I additionally believe that they originally retailed for approximately US$600. Possibly a more knowledgable member could chime in with further information?... The cables present in superb condition, with no damage to the connectors or sheathing. The original plastic box packaging includes a foam insert and a card slip (as per image #4). Any questions, please don't hesitate to ask. Thanks!
