  1. Further Information: This is a pair of lovely Harbeth Super HL5 speakers, with the matching Skylan stands. They were manufactured in the UK in 2011, and are the 30th Anniversary version in premium rosewood finish. They are in absolutely first-rate condition, having been used in a non-smoking, pet/child-free house - the stands have a few tiny scratches at the base. The drivers and veneer are all pristine. They have been boxed up in storage for the past 5 years. I am the second owner - they were imported directly into Australia by a gentleman in Sydney (there being no rep in Australia at the time). He decided very quickly they were not to his taste, and I bought them (via Stereonet) in as-new condition. These are large BBC-style stand-mounted speakers, using an 8 inch poypropylene cone in a ported box, in the classic "2 foot x 1 foot x 1 foot" format. I love them for their fidelity to timbre, particularly in vocals and acoustic instruments, and their ability to convey the music beautifully at moderate volumes. Plenty of info, reviews, etc on the internet. The Skylan stands were the recommended stands for them back then, manufactured in Canada. I have the original boxes and paperwork for the speakers, but no packaging for the stands. Please note: These are not the later versions of the SHL5, which have the suffix "+" or "XD" - which go for considerably more money.
  2. Melody Valve Ltd 8pm Wednesday 21st March, visitors welcome. Willis Room, City of Whitehorse Offices Maroondah Highway (Whitehorse Road), Nunawading Melway Map 48 Ref G9 Contact: 9437 1249 2016 was a landmark year for Melbourne audiophiles, for it was a year when two International Hi Fi Shows came to town. Not only was it a first time for the StereoNet group to organise a very successful show, it was a first for Melody Valve Ltd to exhibit all of their new amplifiers. This month we are very lucky to have Melody present at the club. Established in Melbourne by the founder and chief designer Mr Allen Wang, the company has grown by investing in their own factory in Shenzhen China. It features a modern assembly line, a transformer production line, a vacuum processing plant and a variety of self-built high-end testing equipment. Their current line of amplifiers consists of eight models. Melody will be demonstrating two systems from their Everest amplifier range. The equipment will consist of a 28watt Class A Integrated amplifier, and a Pre/ Power combination. The first model the "Everest 845", uses a Western Electric 845 tube per channel, as well as a pair of 300B driver tubes. The second system will be a pair of mono blocks - "PM 845 EVO" -- each running a pair of 845 valves in Class A mode with a combined output of 70 watts each. The "WE2688 Signature Pre", is a real highlight with its implementation of a WE 416 tube; planar triode, used for microwave telephone systems, that looks like a round metal relay. The two systems will use the same pair of speakers, the Harbeth 40.2. This reference monitor is a 3-way stand mount model that houses a 12" Bass driver with 6.5" Mid and matching 1" Tweeter. Harpeth's top of the range speaker is modified for the domestic audio market with a different bass driver, but still retains the same mid that is used in their studio monitors. If you haven't experienced Melody's presentations at the past Hi Fi Shows, you will see why they get the award for "Exhibitor who tried the hardest to impress". Sounds like we're in for a sonic spectacular. Nick Karayanis Program Co-ordinator Ken Tripp Wise and Wonderful Webmaster Melbourne Audio Club, Inc. http://www.melbourneaudioclub.org.au
  3. interested in getting some opinions So I am looking to upgrade my front speakers to get a bit more enjoyment from 2 channel music. (I have a range of musical tastes - not big on dixieland jazz or zydeco) I really plan on trying to listen to as much as I can, but I am eyeing a set of VAF i66mk2's - would like to get some views on how they might compare to speakers like the ATC SCM40's or Harbeth HL5's. I am unlikely to be able to audition the i66's, but I have owned a pair of DC-X speakers many years ago, and was pretty fond of them. Happy to get other options - the i66's are probably the limit of how big I want to go
  4. For our June club meeting we are very pleased to have the exceptionally musical Harbeth Monitor 40.2 speakers, courtesy of Cameron Pope of Krispy Audio (https://krispyaudio.com.au/). Unfortunately Cameron cannot attend on the day due to other commitments. For our first half, we will have two separate music sessions where two members will play up to 25 minutes of music of their choice. These “Member Music Sessions” (as we call them) prove to be very enjoyable, interesting and often surprizing. Details of the system… Speakers: Harbeth Monitor 40.2 speakers. Refer to: https://krispyaudio.com.au/products/harbeth-monitor-40-2-speakers.html Amplifier: AudioGD Master-10 Integrated. Refer to http://www.audio-gd.com/Master/Master10/Master-10EN.htm Sources: Gryphon Mikado Reference CDP (for CD playback) Oppo BDP-105D universal player (for USB flash drives) The second half of the music sessions will be our popular BYO. Members and guests are welcome to offer music to share with us all. So bring along your favourite music on CD/SACD or USB thumb/flash drives (sorry, no vinyl this month). All we ask is that the music and recordings be interesting. We'll ask you to tell us a little about the artist/recording before it is played. Tracks over 6 minutes will be faded out, to give everyone a fair go. Whether you are a novice or a seasoned veteran, you will have the opportunity to listen, learn and share your experiences with others. Feel free to come and hear the capabilities of the system, or to just share the experience with like-minded music lovers in a friendly and relaxed atmosphere. Guests are welcome – we are a very friendly club so you don't need to know anyone to join us for an afternoon of fine music and sound. Venue: Epping Creative Centre, Dence Park Address: 26 Stanley Road, Epping When: Sunday 16th June 2019 Doors open 1pm Meeting starts at 2pm Tom Waters President Sydney Audio Club W: http://www.sydneyaudioclub.org/ FB: https://www.facebook.com/sydneyaudioclub E: tomwaters@sydneyaudioclub.org.au
  5. Hi all - I've started the process of determining replacements for my Acoustic Energy AE3s (3-way studio monitor style) - i feel they are a little lacking in midrange clarity and their upper-mid bass is a little too much at times. My main criteria for selection are (in descending importance): musicality, smooth top end, a big - preferably wide and high - soundstage, easy ability to follow whatever instrument is present in a particular recording. I mainly play vinyl (Michel Gyrodec/SME 309/Micro Benz Glider SL, Lehmann Black Cube twin phono pre) and have a preamp/processor (EAD) with a Bryston 9Bst power amp so would be using them for HT duties as well. On my shortlist are Magneplanars, Lenehan ML-3s and Harbeth Super HL-5s. Budget is max $7k. I loved the Magneplanar MG 1.7s but for space reasons will be looking at the MG12/QR and MMGs and will be auditioning these soon. I've not heard the Lenehan ML2s or ML-3s but they seem promising and hope to hear them in the coming months. However, I've read great things about the Harbeth Super HL5s - particularly their musicality. From what it appears, many that end up with a pair tend to jump off the upgrade wagon - a very appealing idea for me. I know that a few SNAers are rather fond of them as well. My question is this - while many speak glowingly (and almost reverentially) about their performance with jazz and classical, how do they fare with classic rock, new wave and electronic music - eg Police, Fleetwood Mac, Steely Dan, Cars, Jean Michel Jarre, Kraftwerk, etc? Do they deliver the goods (subject to room interactions and dimensions of course)? Opinions gratefully received.
  6. Just a very few years back I bought a pair of near-mint, not-very-old, 2nd-hand SHL5 speakers (via SNA - 35th Anniversary I think) after I had spent about 3 years reading wall-to-wall, worldwide, glowing reviews. Including in Steronet forums. They were bought blind, as it is impossible to audition this sort of stuff down here in Tas. To my immense (and ongoing / unresolved) surprise, I was disappointed within seconds - and it never got any better; even with a range of amplifiers, including valve. Compared to my (then) Martin Logans, the Harbeths seemed somehow slightly thick, congested, a tad unnatural on vocals, & a bit confused. Nice on full-blown orchestral stuff, but for my mostly spare, lean taste in music, the best I could say about them was that they were 'ordinary'. They lasted about 2 weeks. Fortunately, the chap who purchased them (also SNA if I recall correctly) was delighted with them. So I figured it must be me - an anachronistic olde farte. Other well-regarded transducers have also left me less than thrilled. [ Confession:- I have auditioned over 80 pairs of speakers in my lounge over the last 10 years - 'tis a sorta retirement hobby - so am therefore not a speaker virgin.] It was only later (isn't it always thus) I discovered that I was not absolutely alone in my rogue SHL5 opinion;- very, very rarely, other buffs had similar thoughts with at least one chap describing their sonic signature as being 'veiled'. Then subsequently, an experienced user whose opinions I value but who shall remain anonymous herein.... - and who has been lucky enough to try the P3ESR, Monitor 30.1 and the SHL5 - told me that he too found the SHL5 disappointing and much preferred the 30.1. [Later on, I did in fact acquire a pair of the tiny P3ESR for myself and loved them to bits. Lacking bass as expected, but heaps of life and character - a very engaging speaker.] To top off my confusion totally, my long-term and current speakers are old Spendor BC1s - which I think are excellent on all music. But which are, more or less in design terms, a very, very similar British, 2 cubic foot, thin-walled, lossy box to the Harbeth SHL5. All of which is a long-winded way of leading up to the following...... The BC1s are very long in the tooth now and I feel the urge to repace them with something new similar in size; I still can't work out went wrong with the SHL5s, but I can't help it - I still fancy the Harbeth oeuvre. I simply can't afford the 40.2. Has anyone had an opportunity to audition a pair of the new SHL5+ 40th Anniversary?

  8. Item: Harbeth Super HL5+ in cherry with matching Skylan standsLocation: BerowraPrice: $6,890Item Condition: As newPayment Method: AnyExtra Info: Somehow (long story) I've ended up with 2 pairs of HL5 demo speakers so for space reasons, one has to go. They have been out of the box for photos and been played for one demo only. They are therefore presented as new with no marks, scratches, they're mint. I'm throwing in a pair of Skylan speaker stands as pictured, which would retail at approx $1,200.
  9. Harbeth super hl5 plus with stands and boxes Used and loved, never heard better vocals in my life. But I've been bitten by the upgrade bug. 10. I have for sale my beloved pair of Harbeth M30.1 in Tiger Ebony finish. These are 35th Anniversary Edition, with Ultra-Pure OFC wiring. They're in excellent condition and come from smoke, pet and kid-free home. I'm the first owner and bought the speakers six years ago directly from Harbeth. I looked after them, dusted off regularly, and as per Harbeth's recommendations never used oils or chemicals when cleaning them. The veneer looks great, like new. I also never removed the grills, they fit very tight. My M30.1's had very easy live as I listen to music a few hours a week and always at low volume. So they were never driven hard. It's a very reluctant sale, but as I'm planing to move overseas I would prefer to find them a new good home here, instead of shipping them to the other part of the world. I'll also include my DIY stands. This can be the best Ikea hack ever, they fit speakers perfectly. But I could've done a better job with painting them. They are quite low though, and put the tweeters at around 78cm from the floor, which works for me. I have the original boxes, but would prefer a local sale and pickup at this stage. I'm in Lindfield (2070) and you're off course welcomed to audition and inspect the speakers before buying.
  11. Item: For sale are my much loved Harbeth 30.1 speakers and matching HiFi Rack speaker stands. Both the speakers and stands are in excellent condition and have been meticulously looked after. The speakers are in Eucalyptus veneer and the craftsmanship / finish is amazing - a statement piece. There are many glowing reviews on the musicality of the 30.1's. I am the original owner and purchased the speakers approximately 12 months ago from Audiotech in Canberra - these were ex demonstration speakers and had been very lightly used before I purchased. I have all boxes and packaging as well as paper work. I plan to sell the speakers and stands as a package and will not separate. At this stage my preference is to sell locally (pick-up), however pending interest may consider shipping if organised by the buyer. Location: Bayside Melbourne Price: $3,950 Item Condition: 9/10 Reason for selling: NLR Payment Method: Pickup - Cash, Paypal, COD Only Extra Info: Photos: Advertisements without photos of the actual item will not be approved.

  15. Further information: I was very happy with these speakers and now moving to other Harbeths that I prefer for the type of music I listen to. I am the second owner having purchased them last year from another stereonet member. The speakers are in as new condition with no visible marks, dents or scratches, including the bottom side. I have never removed the grills however, grills look in great shape no tears just the a bit of dust collected in time. The speakers were always kept in house in a pet free, smoke free and fungus free environment, never abused and never played music too loud. Speakers come with original boxes, a bit worn out by the previous moves but will deliver safe packing. The photos were taken last night outside during sunset reason why the colours were quickly changing. Speakers and grills have the same color. I am happy to provide any additional information. Thank you. 20. Item: Harbeth HL-Compact 7ES-3 with Skylan Stands Location: Melbourne Price: $2400 Item Condition: Very Good Reason for selling: Clearing out 2nd system Payment Method: Pickup - Cash, Paypal, COD Only Extra Info: These are in great condition, no marks or nicks. I'm not the first owner (bought off SNA from a Perth seller about 12-18 months ago). Specifications are available at the Harbeth site - https://www.harbeth.co.uk/hifi-speaker/2/Harbeth-C7ES-3-loudspeaker I think these speakers can still be bought new (for $4-5k AUD based on a cursory internet search). They've been my main system, until about 6 months ago and since then have not been used, so time to find them a new home for someone else to enjoy. I have the original boxes for the speakers (not the stands) but would prefer local pickup please. The stands are Skylan, seem to be of solid PDF with partial filling in the vertical corners, and look to be specifically designed for these speakers - they fit perfectly in any case, and bring the speaker to the right height. The stands have screw on spikes. I've been running these with a Yamaha A-S1000 (105W into 8Ohm) and they sound wonderful. Photos:

  23. Harbeth Super HL5 loudpeakers Concept - three-way bass-reflex | Frequency response - 40Hz to 24kHz +/-3dB (free space, 1m, with grille on) | Nominal impedance - 6-8Ω | Efficiency - 86dB/1W/1m | Suggested amplifier power - 25-150W | Dimensions (H x W x D) - 638 x 322 x 300mm Skylan stands - SKY-4P18 Custom fabric covers Further Information: I have just fitted original factory replacement matched Radial woofers. I was having an issue with one of the voice coils intermittently rubbing due to the cone sagging. They are ready for many years of trouble free enjoyment. I have the paperwork and original factory cartons for the replacements, plus the original woofers. The sound is glorious even without the new woofers being fully broken in. I'm already regretting selling them, but it's better for someone to enjoy them rather than sitting in storage while we're on the road. The condition is excellent. There are a few marks on the bottoms of the cabinets but there are no scratches, nicks or bumps elsewhere. No fading of the finish. A big part of the reason is the tailored, fabric covers which are always in place when not in use. The Skylan stands are in excellent condition. Not quite as immaculate as the speakers, but nothing generally noticeable. They include carpet spikes. I am the 2nd owner. I have the original shipping cartons and packing for the loudspeakers but not for the stands. I am not in a position to arrange shipping. I could potentially arrange to meet someone a reasonable distance, but in that case audition is not possible. I drove to Sydney to audition and buy these speakers - it has been well worth the expense and time! Happy to answer any and all questions. Please PM!
