  1. Hi all, not sure if I’m in the right section but looking for advice on diagnosing a fault in a Goodmans 301 full range driver. One of the pair plays sound clearly but has very low volume compared to the other. I have ruled out source issues and cables etc, I have switched out speaker wires , it’s full range, no x-over, so no issues with caps etc to cause the problem. there appear to be very slight corrosion on the positive connection where the wire from the coil meets the speaker wire screw tab, but the wire itself appears intact. could old dry solder on the connectors cause the problem, or am I experiencing a more significant challenge? what else to consider? any easy tests I should be undertaking? any guidance is appreciated . cheers, Paul
  2. Hi all, I bought an old amplifier at a house auction this week and ended up with two giant speakers to boot (I thought it was a table the amp was on and a separate lot) There seems to be a few unconnected wires and some bits I don't know if they are part of the speakers or not. Do any of you have any advice as to what needs to be connected to what , are these things even worth looking at (are they better off being used as firewood) All comments welcome. Cheers Phil
  3. Item: Pair of Goodmans Midax 100 Horn Speakers. Location: Mornington, Vic. Price: $500 ono. Item Condition: Good for age. Reason for selling: Haven't used for a while Payment Method: Pickup - Cash, Paypal, COD Only Extra Info: These very rare pieces work all well and in very good condition as can see in the photos.Great for HiFi and (this exact model) is very famous for being used by The Beatles in Vox amps specially designed for them so as to play loud enough over screaming girls.Very rare, especially in Australia. As I understand, the "100" was the best of the models, used by The Beatles and has a metal (larger/longer) horn whereas the lesser models had plastic and shorter (and probably less power handling). Also have a pair of Goodmans Trebax 100's if anyone's interested (1 needs new diaphragm).$500 ono. Looking for quick sale. Mornington, Vic. Pictures:
  4. Further information: Obviously in need of a little TLC, maybe a re-cone. I am not sure what they are really worth. I have looked on HiFi Shark and I get mixed information. Recent posts here suggest I am in the ballpark but I have reduced my original price. They work, no voice coil rubbing, but there is some obvious damage to the edges of the cones. Maybe someone who knows how will be able to fix the cones without a re-cone. But that just ain't me ?. They came to me with a set of Quad valve gear from a very polite older gentleman and I recently used them to test that the Quad amps are working ( they are). He was a bit particular about keeping all his paperwork and stuff including brochures, catalogues, service documentation, spare parts and accessories, and instruction manuals which is why I have the brochure to go with them. I think he started off with a mono system and went stereo a few years later which would explain why the power amps have quite different serial numbers and these 2 drivers are different to look at. I won't bother with putting the specs here. Those who know what they are already know the specs and otherwise the world of Google will give anyone that asks the right questions a fount of information. Price is open to discussion. Freight/postage and packaging will also need to be discussed if not picking up. 7. Item: Hofmann Power amp, Nakamichi 610 preamp, Nakamichi 480 cassette deck Nakamichi cm300 microphonesx3 $400, Goodmans loudspeakers Location:Hobart Price: Neg. Nak 480 $300, 610 $250 Goodmans $500??? Hofmann amp $350? Item Condition: mostly Good for age-see below Reason for selling:upgrade! Payment Method: Pickup - Cash, Paypal, COD Only, Can ship if there is interest. Extra Info: Nakamichi 610 now sold pending collection in sydney next week Selling on behalf of a colleague. Some things to note: all working when last used (recently) with the exception of cassette deck- drawer is stuck. Probably an easy fix, shall try to have a look when i get time. Nakamichi 610 pre is working, however some of the selector buttons are fiddly/noisy but do work with a bit of patience. Meter lights need replacement. Now for the interesting stuff: Hofmann amp- probably the only one in existence! It was made in Melbourne around 1977 by Mr Hoffmann who was a bass player in MSO at the time. As this customer already had the 610 preamp, he built a power amp only version of his integrated (see brochure below for specs). It sounds decent but was replaced as it didn't like the lowish impedance of Legend Kantu. It certainly sounded better than i had expected! Seems to be an IC based design and runs fairly cool. We assume it has the same 100watts per channel output and has protection circuits built in. Nakamichi cm300 Microphones x 3 come with both cardioid and Omni capsules. They will need new batteries which i'm told can be found/made at battery world. Pics too follow but plenty on the net. Goodmans 'Optim' speakers: Very little info in the net about these, but cabinets appear to have been made in Australia by a Melb hifi dealer Tivoli. See spec sheet in last pic. They work well, no problems. Typical goodmans sound, some marks on cabinet. All gear was purchased as a system in around 1977, one owner. Id anyone has info on the speakers, we'd be keen to hear more. Prices are negotiable and any guidelines would be welcomed. The Nakamichi gear seems to fetch wildly different prices on ebay so not sure what to ask. Can audition by appointment in Blackmans Bay. Pictures:
