  2. Hey all, I'm hoping someone on here may have some experience with electrostatic speakers and difficult placement requiring the use of acoustic panels. I've purchased a pair of Martin Logan ESLs for my lounge room and I went in with my eyes open regarding difficult placement etc of this type of speaker. My situation is that ideally I need them to sit a little further back than the minimal recommended 2' from rear and side walls. They sound great where they are at the moment but having them so far forward is not aesthetically pleasing in our main living area (and the Mrs needs to be as chuffed as I am) so I want to move them back into more of a 'traditional' speaker placement. Does anyone have any experience running these closer to the walls? I'm assuming absorption panels behind /beside will help but will it also reduce the sound stage/volume? Would diffusion panels be better behind them? My ideal placement would have one speaker ~1' from the front and side wall, while the other is open on the sides but would still be ~1' from the front wall. Really appreciate any advice/wisdom
  3. Item: [For Sale] Sanders Magtech Stereo Power Amplifier (black) - under warranty Location: Inner Sydney Price: $4,250 + posting Item Condition: 10/10 Reason for selling: downsizing Payment Method: Cash on pickup or PayPal (+3%) if shipped- have all original packaging and double boxes Extra Info: This very well known amplifier does not need much introduction. This particular unit was purchased from Bill Mclean (Sander's distributor in Oz) about three months ago and paid $4,500. It was purchased second-hand, but the first and only owner of this before me was in fact Bill Mclean himself. This used to be his personal power amplifier. The amp has still 2 weeks of warranty on it which can be extended for another year for additional $250 (Bill has confirmed that this would be transferrable to the new owner). A bit of a story on how I got Bill's personal amplifier. I initially purchased another second-hand Sanders Magtech that Bill had for sale. This was one of the first versions of the amp and we found out it had an issue with overheating (these amps run fairly cold usually). So I called Bill and explained the problem. He said it was "not right" and that he would have replaced that amp with another one. Because he did not have another one for sale at the time, Bill suggested to replace my amp with his own , which was much newer and in perfect condition. To which of course I said yes. The same week the Sydney Hi-fi Show happened to be on, so Bill brought his Sanders down to Sydney and I went pick it up at the Hi-Fi show. I can prove this with my email exchange with Bill, or you can just give him a call. So, in a nut shell, this amplifier is pristine and has still some of the warranty that Bill gave me when I bought it, which as I said can be extended and transferred to new owner. This is a end game amplifier, with a unique power supply that is said to be almost 100% efficient and whilst being a 900W (4ohm) class AB, it runs basically cold because there is no waste of energy. The sound is super transparent, very dynamic and punchy, and very quiet at idle. It goes without saying that this will drive absolutely any speakers ever produced. I used it with Magnepans 1.7 but can drive large electrostatic as well as low impedance dynamic speakers with ease. The specs are: Power (Stereo Version) 500 watts RMS per channel into an 8 ohm load 900 watts RMS per channel into a 4 ohm load Bandwidth DC through 100kHz Class of Operation Class AB Input Impedance 100K unbalanced, 1K balanced Input voltage required for full output 2.2 Volts Noise More than 110dB below rated output Gain 26dB THD Less than 0.01% Damping Factor Greater than 600 into an 8 ohm load Voltage Voltage is user selectable for use world-wide. All details here: http://sanderssoundsystems.com/products/amplifiers/magtech-amp It was on Eli but this is now for sale. Thanks! Pictures: see below
  4. The video shows refurbished Quad 57's from the 1957 design in action with a Garrard turntable. It starts with a conversation that reveals the quality of he recoding gear and also the room timbre. Later the Quads start up. For playing acoustic music I dont think there's been any improvement in design in sixty years except for digital annihilating those annoying pops from records. Sixty years and where's the real progress? For sceptics that think Youtube playback cant possible reveal the quality of system please just move on. Disclaimer: I dont have Quad 57's or a turntable but I think Ive been conned.

  6. Item: Acoustat 2+2 (4 panels per side) with Bryan's (Lansche Plasma Guy) modifications + frames, does not include transformers or DD Amplifier. Location: Melbourne, North East Price: $2000 Item Condition: very good Reason for selling: My better half sat me down for a talk yesterday…….. it did not end well! Payment Method: Pickup - Cash, Paypal, bank transfer Only. Can ship at buyers expense however pickup is preferred Extra Info: VERY VERY RELUCTANT SALE. I located the panels in the US and had them shipped out after hearing Bryans amazing setup. I sold my new Magnepan 3.7s and began the journey. I just don't have the funds for the Direct drive stereo amplifier to run them to their full potential. The panels are in frames with 4 per side. All wire modifications are made (I have left the wires long to allow for varying panel setup). They include the speaker wires made to suit the high voltage needed. I am currently running them with a modified 2+2 transformer power supply's on loan from Bryan. Here is some interesting reading on Bryans modifications and Steve M's impressions: http://www.stereo.net.au/forums/index.php?/topic/61877-best-speaker-in-the-world-just-got-better/?hl=acoustat Pictures:
  7. Item: Quad 57s in excellent condition, fully reconditioned by John Hall, this was a ground up rebuild no expense spared with everything done that could be to the panels and electronics. Play time since done is a mere 70 hours approx, so they are just settled in nicely. They come with higher black metal stands (not the inferior low standard ones), the gold grills are flawless other than a tiny blemish at the bottom of one (see photo) and is hard to see. It is rare to see such a perfectly presented pair. These are an absolute classic and actually play all kinds of music including modern extremely well. The midrange (where it all happens) is to die for and will strike an emotional cord with anyone. Location: Syndey - inner west Price: $2,500 now $2,000 firm Item Condition: like new Reason for selling: Upgraded and dont have a room big enough to keep them as that was my wish. Payment Method: Pickup - Cash. These really need pick up, but will consider shipping at buyers expense and responsibility. Extra Info: Pictures: more photos to follow.......the computer had a conniption Now added photos.
  8. ESL lovers - any users Quad 57 users in Auckland who would care to share their 57 wisdom with me? I have unexpectedly received a set of stacked 57s (still stunned by my good fortune) and would like to start a process of checking and/or rehabilitating them. I have the power leads (a bit shabby) and Bulgin plugs but I also have lots of questions.
  9. I have an amazing pair of Quad esl63's that have been rebuilt and tweaked by an eslectrostat genius in Sydney. He has given me an effective lifetime warranty on them, which I think I can arrange to transfer to you. I would keep them forever but due to changed domestic arangements, I dont have room to do them justice. Let me know if you would like to hear them. I paid $1800 to rebuild them, after paying for them, so would like to get back around $2400. The esl 63 is known to be a better overall performer than the esl57, however the esl57 has a sweeter midrange. The treble panels on these ones surpass the esl 57, so you get better than the best of both worlds
