  1. On Saturday 15/09/07, two friends and myself were very generously given the opportunity to audition the brand new model Duntech DSM-15 speakers at the Sydney factory. Kiat at Duntech arranged this audition along with a brief "factory tour". I must sincerely thank Kiat for sharing his industry knowledge, Hi Fi passion, and valuable time with us. By the way, the legendary Duntech Sovereign speaker is still available at about AUD $30,000/pair, albeit with an "improved" crossover network and updated Dynaudio drivers, compared to the original model. Duntech will only sell the Sovereign direct to the consumer, not through retailers. RRP for the DSM-15 is AUD $12,000/pair. The associated test equipment was; Plinius 9200 Integrated amplifier with 200W/channel output@8ohms and Plinius CD-101 CD player. This is the relevant link. http://www.duntech.com.au/images/all.html I was quite surprised to discover that the DSM-15 is actually a stand mount design utilising a dedicated matching stand, which can be mass loaded. For our test the stand was indeed filled with sand. Kiat confirmed that the speaker cabinets are made overseas due to prohibitively high Australian manufacturing costs associated with curved cabinets. He pointed out the extremely high standard of cabinet fit and finish which was in fact obvious. The top enclosure which contains the drivers(1 x Dynaudio 5 inch mid/woofer and 1 x Scanspeak 1 inch tweeter) is quite small, and I was very sceptical when Kiat had claimed a quasi anechoic bass response down to 42 Hz at -3dB. Test CD's included: 1. Burmester Art For The Ear, Burmester Audiosysteme, Vorfuhrungs CD III 2. Master Female Audiophile SACD/CD Hybrid Disc 3. Renee Olstead - Self titled album 4. Evanescence - Fallen 5. Avril Lavigne - Let Go 6. James Mayer - Room For Squares CD's 1, 2 and 3 were predominently used for our listening tests. Test conditions were very difficult for the small DSM-15 due to the "open factory floor" environment, but bass was still somehow surprisingly well extended. Bass was also extremely tight and clean with no discernible overhang. These speakers really did have quite satisfying bass output especially with the Cello, even when compared to a small floor standing design, so I attempted to quantify their response with a "subwoofer test disc". At 40 Hz input test signal, bass output was reasonably strong, but audibly improved at the next increment of 50 Hz. As far as I could tell, with this crude test, bass response should be close to Duntech specification. The second most obvious characteristic which struck me was the amazing transient attack displayed by the DSM-15 speakers. I have never experienced such a sense of realism or dynamic range with speakers of this size. Guitar string plucks, piano key strokes, drum stick cracks, all had great immediacy helping to create that "live" sensation. The quiver of female voices could easily be heard, and both transparency and detail were very good. The soundstage was very wide and deep, but imaging remained solid and focused. These speakers were almost always neutral, but did become somewhat "lively" when fed with very bright recordings. They do however punish poor quality recordings like Avril Lavigne's - Let Go, which sounded very harsh and noisy. After sampling this CD, everyone present demanded that I remove the disc. Both of my friends said that they noticed the midrange voicing was a "tad" on the warm side which gives the DSM-15 speaker a "valve like" sound, but personally I did not perceive this. I am definitely no expert, but have attempted to give my opinion on these "landmark" new Duntech speakers. I hope that this "review" is helpful. Thanks again Kiat.
  2. Howdy here's a quick round up of the evolution of my system. In 1996 it consisted of: Meridian 508 Krell KAV300i Duntech Viceroy As of joining Stereonet my system had been reasonably stable for over a decade & looked something like this On the left are some of my CDs & taking pride of place were my Duntech Viceroys which I owned from 1996 until 2010. Corner front left is an REL Strata III doing incognito bass duties disguised as a lamp table. Inside the cabinet on the right is my Krell KAV300i, A Denon AVR underneath. On the left looks like my Oppo 93 on top of the old Panasonic DVDRecorder. Bottom left is the kids PS3. The Centre channel is a Duntech Onyx and the rears would have been Sonique SAV1s (out of picture). Also out of the picture is my Benchmark DAC1 USB which is nearer my chair where the laptop is. I still have a Meridian 508 CD Player which is now hiding in my wardrobe - I can't bear to sell it. Sometime after this picture I ripped up the carpet. In 2010 I sold my Duntech Viceroys because of the bass problem in my room & replaced them with Vaf i91 which I had originally bought for rear channels. Much else was the same. Can't seem to find any photos & even though it was documented on Stereonet the photos no longer show up for some reason. There were a few more minor changes some good, some terrible. eg: I had a Emotiva UMC1 in my system longer than I would have liked. An Emotiva XPA3 handles the center (unchanged) and rears (Vaf i90s) I now run the Oppo straight into the power amps. The Oppo has an ESata and USB HDD attached to it. There is a Marantz SA8003 for two channel SACD listening. I still have the Krell 300i which is going strong since 1995 and is now powering its 4th pair of speakers (the ones before the Duntechs were Sonique 6.5) Then we get to the current incarnation which came about in December 2013 when I received my new VAF i66s. Apart from this the main change is that because of over flowing CDs I have around 700 of them stored out of their cases in folders. When listening to music I put a blanket over the TV. If I'm in a hypercritical mood I set up some impromptu absorption at the first reflection points as well. (blankets on microphone stands). This seems to make less difference than the blanket over the TV but it is noticeable, So it seems the main thing I change about my system is the front speakers. The last four pairs have all been South Australian and all had first order crossovers. Hmmm .. .....
  3. Hello Any comments on the best place to get speaker drivers re-cone / repaired ? I am in VIC. I have older Duntech Princess. I found a place online that has been very helpful in emails, although i just noticed they seem to have some bad reviews online, this has me a little concerned. Any comments or advice would be much appreciated. Regards Rob

  6. Item: Duntech Barron Speakers Location: Melbourne / N.E. Victoria Price: $1400 . ( Donation to SNA if these sell) Item Condition: Very Good Reason for selling: Too many speakers! Payment Method: Pickup - Cash, Paypal, EFT Extra Info: Purchased a few months ago for the Batmaqn . http://www.stereo.net.au/forums/topic/125485-fs-duntech-barons/?tab=comments#comment-1869039 I purchased these Barron's from the above SNA member (great chap) a couple of months ago to have a listen to the Duntech sound. I think that represent great value for $1400. I really only grabbed these for a listen as they were not intended replace my main speakers and I seem to be struck down my the too many speaker diease! Every room I walk into has got more speakers in it. (I am sure I am not alone here ) I think these would need a reasonable amp to drive them properly. I would be happy to drop these off in Melbourne tomorrow or next week in Melbourne or in Adelaide as I am planning on a visit. Off course you're welcome to pick them up from N.E. Victoria. Please don't request the the grilles be removed as I don't know how the socks come off and the drivers are all in good condition. Pictures:
